Weekly Film Music Roundup (May 4, 2012)

Only one movie is opening in wide release this weekend:

Already beating box office records is the comic book adaptation The Avengers written and directed by Joss Whedon and starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Clark Gregg and Samuel L. Jackson. The film’s score is composed by Alan Silvestri. The composer’s score has been released digitally on Hollywood Records and in an expanded form on CD by Intrada Records. A separate soundtrack featuring songs from and inspired by the film, including Soundgarden’s end credits song Live to Rise has also been released (click here for more information).

Opening in limited release is the comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel directed by John Madden and starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel and Tom Wilkinson. Thomas Newman has composed the film’s music. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score has been released by Sony Classical earlier this week in the US. Joel Goldsmith (1957-2012)

Joel Goldsmith has passed away at age 54. The composer was born on November 19, 1957. Throughout his career, he received three Emmy Award nominations for his music for the sci-fi hit shows Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, including a nod for the latter series’ main titles. His most prominent feature credit as a composer was the 1996 sci-fi movie Star Trek: First Contact, on which he collaborated with his father Jerry Goldsmith and which recently received an expanded CD release. His other feature film credits include Roland Emmerich’s Moon 44, the fantasy adventure Kull the Conqueror starring Kevin Sorbo and the Kirk Douglas-starring comedy Diamonds.

Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the Aardman Animation’s and Sony Pictures Animation’s 3D stop-motion animated feature The Pirates! Band of Misfits directed by Peter Lord (Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run) & Jeff Newitt and featuring the voice talent of Hugh Grant, Salma Hayek, Jeremy Piven, Imelda Staunton and David Tennant. The film’s score is composed by Theodore Shapiro. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music has been released earlier this week on Madison Gates Records and is available exclusively on iTunes. Also opening wide is the period thriller The Raven directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) and starring John Cusack, Alice Eve and Brendan Gleeson. The score for the film about the final days of Edgar Allan Poe is composed by Lucas Vidal. A soundtrack album featuring Vidal’s original music has been released by Relativity Music Group. Pino Donaggio to Receive Lifetime Achievment Award at Ghent Film Festival

Pino Donaggio has been selected as the 12th recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at the the closing-night gala of the World Soundtrack Awards at the Ghent Film Fest on October 20, 2012. The composer is best known for his collaborations with director Brian De Palma, which include such films as Dressed to Kill, Carrie and Blow Out, as well as the upcoming drama Passion. Among the composer that were previously honored with the award are John Barry, Marvin Hamlisch, Giorgio Moroder and Angelo Badalamenti. In addition, the music of James Newton Howard will also be celebrated at the 12th World Soundtrack Awards gala. The composer whose credits include The Sixth Sense, Signs, King Kong, The Fugitive, Michael Clayton and The Hunger Games, as well as the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman and The Bourne Legacy was awarded as the Film Composer of the Year in 2008.

Daniel Licht to Perform Music from ‘Dexter’ at Largo

It has been announced today that composer Daniel Licht will be performing selections of his original music for the Showtime hit series Dexter at Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles on June 10, 2012. The concert will be introduced by actor Michael C. Hall. Also featured will be composer Rolfe Kent with performances of his Emmy-nominated main titles theme for Dexter and other scores. Other highlights include the premiere of Daniel’s music from the upcoming video game Silent Hill – Book of Memories performed by the Silent Hill series’ vocalist, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, as well as a number of surprise guest performances. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the romantic drama The Lucky One based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks, directed by Scott Hicks (Shine) and starring Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling and Blythe Danner. The film’s original score is written by Mark Isham. No score album has been announced yet, but WaterTower Music hss released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s songs by artists including Jules Larson, Correatown, Joshua Radin, Early Winters, Voxhaul Broadcast, A Fine Frenzy and Mayfield. Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Think Like a Man directed by Tim Story and starring Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Good, Gabrielle Union, Jerry Ferrara, Regina Hall, Terrence J. and Romany Malco. Christopher Lennertz has composed the film’s score. A soundtrack album featuring the comedy’s title song performed by Jennifer Hudson & Ne-Yo feat. Rick Ross, as well as other songs from and inspired by the film by artists including John Legend feat. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy The Three Stooges directed by Bobby and Peter Farrelly and starring Chris Diamantopolous, Sean Hayes and Will Sasso in the title roles, alongside Sofia Vergara, Jane Lynch, Larry David, Jennifer Hudson, Craig Bierko and Carly Craig. John Debney has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced yet, but check out our previous news article for a video from the orchestral recording sessions of the score. Also opening wide is the horror thriller The Cabin in the Woods written by Joss Whedon, directed by Drew Goddard and starring Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchison, Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. The film’s music is written by  David Julyan (Memento, The Prestige). Rolfe Kent to Receive BMI’s Richard Kirk Award

Rolfe Kent is the recipient of the Richard Kirk Award for outstanding career achievement at this year’s BMI Film & Television Awards. The Emmy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated composer has previously received 13 BMI Film & Television Awards since 2002. Kent’s best known work includes his score for Alexander Payne’s Election, About Schmidt and Sideways, as well as Jason Reitman’s Thank You For Smoking and Up in the Air. He also composed the main titles for the Showtime hit drama Dexter, which earned him an Emmy nomination. Among his other credits are the hit comedies Wedding Crashers, Legally Blonde, Freaky Friday and Mean Girls. Kent most recently scored last year’s family film Mr. Popper’s Penguins and the critic favorite Young Adult. Next up for the composer is the crime comedy Gambit directed by Michael Hoffman and starring Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz.

Two movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy American Reunion directed by  Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg and starring Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Eugene Levy, Tara Reid, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge and Mena Suvari. The film’s score is written by Lyle Workman (The 40-Year Old Virgin, Superbad). Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring two tracks from the composer’s score, as well as the film’s songs by artists including Good Charlotte, Spice Girls, Boyz II Men and Montell Jordan. Already in theaters since Wednesday is James Cameron’s Titanic 3D starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. The film’s Academy Award-winning music is composed by James Horner. Sony Classical has released a new 4-disc anniversary soundtrack edition featuring a newly-remastered version of the original soundtrack, the album Back to Titanic, as well as a  disc of period music recorded for the movie by I Salonisti – the five-piece quintet that appears in the film and a new compilation of songs from the early 1900s. Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

The first wide release of the week is the 3D fantasy film Wrath of the Titans directed by Jonathan Liebesman and starring Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Danny Huston, Edgar Ramirez, Rosamund Pike and Bill Nighy. The sequel to the 2010 film Clash of the Titans is scored by Javier Navarrete (Pan’s Labyrinth). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score has been released by Watertower Music earlier this week. For audio clips and more details, visit our previous article. Also opening wide is the family fantasy comedy Mirror Mirror directed by Tarsem Singh and starring Lily Collins as Snow White, Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, as well as Armie Hammer, Sean Bean and Nathan Lane. Eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken has composed the music for the film. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as the original song I Believe in Love performed by Lily Collins.
