Last night, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Emmy Award-nominated composers and songwriters in the music-related categories at the Montage hotel in Beverly Hills. SCL president Ashley Irwin, as well as Television Academy music peer group governors Rickey Minor and Michael A. Levine introduced the nominees who briefly spoke to the audience. Among the composers in the Outstanding Music Composition for a Series category present at the event were previous Emmy winners Jeff Beal who received his fourth Emmy nomination this year for his music for Netflix’s House of Cards and his fifteenth nomination overall, as Bear McCreary who received his first nomination for Starz’s Outlander and his fourth nomination within the past six years. WaterTower Music has published a video featurette about the music for Scott Cooper’s thriller Black Mass. The video features composer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL (Mad Max: Fury Road, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Divergent) discussing the character themes he composed for the movie starring Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Kevin Bacon, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons, Corey Stoll, Rory Cochrane, Sienna Miller and Adam Scott. Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller The Visit written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, produced by Jason Blum and starring Kathryn Hahn, Deanna Dunagan, Peter McRobbie, Ed Oxenbould and Olivia DeJonge. The movie doesn’t feature an original score except for short piano track for the movie’s epilogue scene written by Paul Cantelon (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, W.). Also opening wide is the thriller The Perfect Guy directed by David M. Rosenthal and starring Sanaa Lathan, Michael Ealy, Morris Chestnut, Charles S. Dutton, Tess Harper, Kathryn Morris, Rutina Wesley and Holt McCallany. Atli Orvarsson (Vantage Point, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Chicago Fire) and Dave Fleming have composed the film’s original music. Madison Gate Record has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ music today. Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album for the British comedy Bill. The album features the film’s original music composed by Andrew Hewitt (The Double, The Stanford Prison Experiment, Submarine). The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 18, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Bill is directed by Richard Bracewell and stars Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. Lakeshore Records will release two soundtrack albums for the indie drama Mississippi Grind. Both albums feature a collection of blues tracks inspired by the movie by artists including Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Minnie, Joe Callicott, John Lee Hooker, Leo Welch, Memphis Slim, Odetta, Junior Kimbrough & more. Both albums will be released digitally on September 18 and physically on October 2. The World Soundtrack Academy has announced the five nominees for this year’s Discovery of the Year Award, via which the organization rewards up-and-coming talent from the previous year. The winner will be announced at the 15th World Soundtrack Awards & Concert on October 24, 2015 in Ghent, Belgium and will get the opportunity to perform at the 16th World Soundtrack Awards next year. ‘Lamb’ Soundtrack Announced

Tricatel will release a soundtrack album for the Ethiopian drama Lamb. The album features the film’s original music composed by Chassol (Dark Touch). The soundtrack will be released overseas on August 25, 2015. Lamb is written and directed by Yared Zeleke and stars Rediat Amare, Kidist Siyum, Welela Assefa, Surafel Teka, Rahel Teshome and Indris Mohamed. The movie follows a 9-year-old Ethiopian boy who risks all to save his only friend — his mother’s pet lamb – after her death.
