Mark Isham is scoring the upcoming action thriller Homefront. The movie is directed by Gary Fleder (Runaway Jury) and stars Jason Statham, James Franco, Frank Grillo, Winona Ryder, Izabela Vidovic and Kate Bosworth. The film follows an ex-DEA agent who moves his family to a quiet town hoping to escape his past and finds the town to be overrun with violence, drug traffickers and an evil meth magnate. Sylvester Stallone wrote the screenplay and is also producing the Millennium Films production with Kevin King Templeton (The Expendables, Rocky Balboa, Rambo) and Rene Besson (Drive Angry, The Mechanic). Avi Lerner and Trevor Short are executive producing the project. The composer has also previously collaborated with Fleder on such films as Kiss the Girls, Don’t Say a Word and The Express.

Varèse Sarabande’s 35th Anniversary Celebration
On Saturday night, film music label Varèse Sarabande hosted their 35th Anniversary Concert Gala at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California. The sold out concert was hosted and produced by Varese Sarabande’s Robert Townson and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) and Chorale. The event featured a special guest performance by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer who performed a suite from Driving Miss Daisy on piano featuring Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and violinist Ann Marie Calhoun. The suite also included a preview from the composer’s score for the upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel. Additionally, Academy Award-winner Michael Giacchino (Up) conducted the world premiere of a special suite from his score for Star Trek Into Darkness and John Powell (The Bourne Trilogy) conducted a suite from his Oscar-nominated score for Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the sports drama 42 written and directed by Brian Helgeland and stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie, Alan Tudyk, Christopher Meloni, Ryan Merriman, Brad Beyer and T.R. Knight. The film’s original score is composed by Mark Isham (Crash, A River Runs Through It). WaterTower Music has released two soundtracks, including an album featuring the songs from the movie and a track from Isham’s score (click here for our announcement including audio clips), as well as an album featuring the composer’s score (audio clips and the full details are available here). James L. Venable (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, EuroTrip) has composed the film’s score. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Hyper Crush, Latief Scott, Bellringer, Blind Truth featuring Georgia Harris and Tarik NuClothes on April 23. ’42’ Score Album Announced
WaterTower Music will release a score album for the sports drama 42. The album features the film’s original music composed by Mark Isham (Crash, Miracle, A River Runs Through It) who recorded his orchestral score at Abbey Road Studios in London. The soundtrack will be released digitally on April 9, 2013. As previously reported, the label will also release a separate soundtrack album featuring songs from the film, as well as one track from the score. 42 is written and directed by Brian Helgeland and stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Christopher Meloni, Ryan Merriman, Brad Beyer, Judy Tylor, Jon Bernthal, Nicole Beharie and T.R. Knight. The movie tells the story of legendary baseball player Jackie Robinson, who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier when he joined the roster of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The drama will be released nationwide on April 12 by Warner Bros. Pictures.

BMI has published several videos from last week’s film composer/director roundtable Music & Film: The Creative Process at the Sundance Film Festival. Participants include composer Terence Blanchard, composer Mark Isham and director George Tillman, Jr. whose drama The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete premiered at the festival, composer Ludwig Goransson and writer/director Ryan Cogler whose feature Fruitvale received the top Sundance honor and was picked up for distribution by The Weinstein Company, composer Rob Simonsen and director James Ponsoldt whose coming of age drama The Spectacular Now was acquired by A24 for a theatrical release (Simonsen also scored the comedy The Way, Way Back, which was picked up by Fox Searchlight as the biggest sale at the festival), composer Abel Korzeniowski and director Randy Moore who worked together on the controversial Disney theme park-set Escape from Tomorrow, composer Dustin O’Halloran who scored the indie drama Breathe In, his second project for Drake Doremus following Like Crazy and composer Craig Wedren and director Jill Solloway who collaborated on the comedy Afternoon Delight.
‘Power of Story: Measure for Measure’ Sundance Panel Announced
This year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature the composer panel Power of Story: Measure for Measure. The event will be moderated by Chris Douridas (KCRW-FM’s daily music program Morning Becomes Eclectic) and will include such participants as Academy Award-nominated composer Mark Isham who co-scored the indie drama The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete with Alicia Keys. This marks the composer’s first time attending Sundance for a film he scored. As previously reported, he is also participating in the BMI composer/director roundtable with director George Tillman Jr. Other participants of the Power of Story: Measure for Measure panel include five-time Grammy Award winner and Golden Globe-nominated composer Terence Blanchard (The 25th Hour, Inside Man, Malcolm X) whose opera on boxing legend Emile Griffith premieres in June 2013, as well as Academy Award-winning composer Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (Finding Neverland, Unfaithful) who established the Transatlantyk Poznan International Film and Music Festival and the Instytut Rozbitek in his home country Poland, which is aimed at developing new talent in the arts.
Mark Isham and Alicia Keys to Score ‘The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete’
Mark Isham is teaming up with singer/songwriter Alicia Keys to score the upcoming drama The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete. The film is directed by George Tillman Jr. and stars Jennifer Hudson, Jordin Sparks, Anthony Mackie, Jeffrey Wright, Skylan Brooks and Ethan Dizon. The movie follows two boys in Brooklyn who are left to fend for themselves over the summer after their mothers are taken away by the authorities. Keys is also executive producing the project. Michael Starrbury has written the screenplay and Jana Edelbaum (The Answer Man), Rachel Cohen (Dirty Girl) and Bob Teitel (Barbershop, Faster) are producing. Tillman Jr. has previously collaborated with Isham on the Robert De Niro-starring drama Men of Honor.
Mark Isham to Score TNT’s ‘L.A. Noir’
Mark Isham is scoring the upcoming TNT original series L.A. Noir. The show created by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) and based on on the book L.A. Noir: The Struggle For The Soul Of America’s Most Seductive City by John Buntin chronicles the battle between Los Angeles Police Chief William Parker and mobster Mickey Cohen, a one-time boxer who rose to the top of LA.s criminal world during the 1940’s & 1950’s. The series stars Jon Berthnal, Jeffrey DeMunn, Jeremy Strong, Neal McDonough, Milo Ventimiglia, Ron Rifkin, Pihla Viitala and Alexa Davalos. Darabont who has previously collaborated with Isham on the feature films The Mist and The Majestic directed the pilot episode and is executive producing the project with Michael De Luca (The Social Network) and Elliott Webb (Tall Time Tales).

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the video game adaptation sequel Resident Evil: Retribution directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Johann Urb, Li Bingbing, Shawn Roberts, Kevin Durand, Oded Fehr, Boris Kodjoe and Michelle Rodriguez. The film’s score is composed by tomandandy (The Strangers) who have scored the previous installment in the series. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer duo’s score, as well the end credits song Hexes produced by Bassnectar featuring Chino Moreno (of the Deftones) on vocals. Also opening wide is the 3D re-release of Pixar’s animated hit feature Finding Nemo directed by Andrew Stanton and featuring the voice talent of Ellen DeGeneres, Albert Brooks and Alexander Gould. The film’s music is composed by Thomas Newman who received an Academy Award-nomination for his work on the film. No new soundtrack has been released, but the original 2003 album is still in print (click here to download the album).
