Johann Johannsson is attached to score the upcoming action thriller Mandy. The film will be directed by Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) and is set to star Nicolas Cage. The movie is set in the primal wilderness of 1983 where a broken and haunted man hunts an unhinged religious sect who slaughtered the love of his life. Daniel Noah, Josh C. Waller (Cooties, Camino) & Elijah Wood are producing the project for Spectrevision, alongside Nate Bolotin (The Raid 2) for XYZ Films and Adrian Politowski (Erased) for Umedia. The composer has previously scored 2013’s McCanick produced by Noah & Waller.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the fantasy epic The Great Wall directed by Zhang Yimou and starring Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Hanyu Zhang, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Kenny Lin, Junkai Wang and Zheng Kai. Johann Johannsson to Score Darren Aronofsky’s Next Movie
Darren Aronofsky revealed at a Master Class at the Reykjavík Film Festival that Johann Johannsson will be composing the music for the director’s next, currently untitled movie. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, Domhnall Gleeson and Ed Harris. The drama centers on a couple whose relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. Aronofsky has also written the screenplay and is producing the project with Scott Franklin and Ari Handel (Jackie). It marks Johannsson’s first collaboration with Aronofsky.
‘Arrival’ Soundtrack Details
The details of the soundtrack album for Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi drama Arrival have been revealed. The album features the film’s original music composed and produced by Johann Johannsson (The Theory of Everything, Sicario, Prisoners) who worked with several singers and vocal ensembles and combined both classical and avant-garde elements in his compositions for the project. Among those appearing are the Theatre of Voices, conducted by Paul Hillier, and artists such as Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Hildur Guonadottir. Also included is Max Richter’s piece On the Nature of Daylight, as featured at the beginning and end of the movie. The soundtrack will be released on November 11, 2016 by Deutsche Grammophon and is now available for pre-order on Amazon.

Johann Johannsson to Score Denis Villeneuve’s ‘Blade Runner’ Sequel
Johann Johannsson confirmed in a recent interview on the Icelandic radio station RUV that he will be reteaming with Denis Villeneuve on the upcoming Blade Runner sequel. The film stars Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, David Dastmalchian, Hiam Abbass, Jared Leto and Robin Wright. Hampton Fancher and Michael Green (Green Lantern) have written the screenplay. Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator) who directed the 1982 original film (scored by Vangelis) is producing the project with Broderick Johnson, Andrew A. Kosove (The Blind Side, Insomnia, The Book of Eli).
Johann Johannsson Scoring James Marsh’s ‘Deep Water’
Johann Johannsson is reuniting with director James Marsh on the upcoming drama Deep Water. The film stars Colin Firth as fated amateur yachtsman Donald Crowhurst, alongside Rachel Weisz, David Thewlis, Ken Stott, and Jonathan Bailey. The movie chronicles Crowhurst’s attempt to complete the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in 1968 and his subsequent attempts to cover up his failure. Scott Z. Burns (The Bourne Ultimatum, Contagion) has written the screenplay and is also producing the project with Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, In Bruges). Johannsson has previously collaborated with Marsh on 2013’s Theory of Everything, for which the composer received the Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination.
Jóhann Jóhannsson Scoring So Yong Kim’s ‘Lovesong’
Jóhann Jóhannsson is reuniting with director So Yong Kim on the upcoming drama Lovesong. The film stars Jena Malone, Riley Keough, Brooklyn Decker, Amy Seimetz, Ryan Eggold and Rosanna Arquette. The movie follows Sarah & Mindy, two best friends who embark on an impromptu road trip with Sarah’s young daughter in tow and see their friendship develop into a surprising romance – despite the fact that Mindy is about to get married. So Yong Kim has also written the screenplay with Bradley Rust Gray (The Exploding Girl, Jack and Diane) who is also producing the project with Alex Lipschultz, Johnny Mac and David Hansen.

The film’s original music is composed by John Paesano (Daredevil, When the Game Stands Tall) who previously scored the first part in the series. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music.
