Megamind

Music by Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe

Dreamworks Animation’s latest movie features a score by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe, as well as numerous popular songs. A soundtrack album featuring about 30 minutes of score, as well as most of the songs used in the movie has been released by Lakeshore Records. To listen to clips, check out Amazon or iTunes. The movie contains roughly 50 minutes of score including a very nice arrangement of the main themes during the end credits which has surprisingly been left off the soundtrack album. John Ottman scores ‘Unknown’

Film Music Reporter has learned that John Ottman is currently finishing up work on the upcoming mystery thriller Unknown (previously entitled Unknown White Male). In the movie, a man awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one believes him. With the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is. The movie stars Liam Neeson, January Jones, Diane Kruger, Frank Langella and Aidan Quinn. The project marks Ottman’s third collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra after House of Wax and last year’s Orphan. Unknown is produced by Joel Silver, who has worked with Ottman on numerous projects such as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Gothika and most recently on this year’s The Losers. Stephen Warbeck to score Game of Thrones

Stephen Warbeck has been chosen as the composer for the upcoming HBO fantasy drama series Game of Thrones. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series and is produced and co-written by David Benioff (The 25th Hour, Troy, The Kite Runner). Game of Thrones is set in a fictitious world where magic exists and the ruling empire is in shambles. The series chronicles the conflicts of kings, queens, mercenaries and warlords as the they battle for control of the throne.The cast includes Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey. Hans Zimmer confirmed to score untitled Sherlock Holmes sequel

Hans Zimmer’s agency has confirmed his involvement in the upcoming untitled Sherlock Holmes sequel. The assignment doesn’t come as a surprise given the positive reaction to the score for the first part which ended up getting Zimmer his first Oscar nomination in 9 years. The Guy Ritchie-directed movie is currently filming and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law alongside new cast members Stephen Fry, Jared Harris and Noomi Rapace. In the sequel, Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty. Warner Bros has set a December 16, 2011 release. Marcelo Zarvos slated to score The Bay

Marcelo Zarvos is set to reunite with director Barry Levinson on the upcoming sci-fi horror film The Bay (aka Isopod). Zarvos and Levinson previously collaborated on the 2008 satire What Just Happened and this year’s HBO movie You Don’t Know Jack. According to Screen Daily, The Bay centers around the aftermath of a viral outbreak on the Eastern Seaboard. The story is told via a series of recordings on camera phones, 911 calls and other scraps of video as the town of Claridge, Maryland, is engulfed by chaos. The cast mostly consists of relatively unknown actors. The film is produced by Jason Blum and Steven Schneider, the team behind the Paranormal Activity movies. Marco Beltrami to score The Thing prequel and Scream 4

Marco Beltrami  has been hired to score the upcoming horror thriller The Thing. The prequel’s story takes place before the actions of the 1982 classic directed by John Carpenter. The movie directed by Matthijs van Heijingen Jr. is set in the Antarctica where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The Thing stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Eric Christian Olsen and Joel Edgerton. Universal Pictures has set a April 29, 2011 release date for the movie. Read the rest of this entry »

James Newton Howard taking over The Tourist

James Newton Howard has taken over scoring duties on the dramatic thriller The Tourist starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. He is replacing composer Gabriel Yared who has already recorded music for the movie in London earlier this year. The movie directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Live of Others) revolves around Frank, an American tourist visiting Italy to mend a broken heart and Elise, an extraordinary woman who deliberately crosses his path. The recording sessions for the score have recently started in Los Angeles and the movie is scheduled to be released on December 10 by Sony Pictures. Read the rest of this entry »

UPDATE (February 24, 2011): The Gardener has recently received a new title: A Better Life.

Alexandre Desplat has been hired to score the upcoming drama The Gardener. In the movie, a gardener in East L.A. struggles to keep his son away from gangs and immigration agents while traveling across town to perform landscaping work for the city’s wealthy landowners. The Gardener is directed by Chris Weitz who previously worked with Desplat on The Golden Compass and The Twilight Saga: New Moon. The indie drama stars Demian Bichir. Film Music Reporter has learned that Harald Kloser and Thomas Wander have been hired to score Roland Emmerich’s latest movie Anonymous. The political thriller centers around who actually wrote the plays of William Shakespeare set against the backdrop of the succession of Queen Elizabeth I, and the Essex Rebellion against her. Giacchino to score Cars 2

According to a recent article in Variety, Michael Giacchino has started working on Pixar’s animation sequel Cars 2. Giacchino follows the footsteps of Randy Newman, who scored the first part back in 2006. In the sequel directed by Brad Lewis and John Lassetter, racing star Lightning McQueen teams up with his best friend Mater for an international adventure as they go up against the world’s fastest car.  Most of the voice talent of the first movie is expected to return. Cars 2, which marks Giacchino’s third Pixar project after The Incredibles, Ratatouille and Up is slated to come out on June 24, 2011.
