‘Smash’ Premieres Tonight on NBC

The musical drama Smash is premiering tonight on NBC. The show features original songs written by Academy Award-nominated composer Marc Shaiman (Hairspray, South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut) and Scott Wittman who are also also executive producing the show. Shaiman is also writing the original score. Columbia Records has already released the first two songs from the series’ pilot, including Let Me Be Your Star (performed by Katherine McPhee and Megan Hilty) and The National Pastime. Both songs are available to download on iTunes. A third song from the pilot, a cover version of Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful (performed by Katherine McPhee) will be released on February 13. Milan Records has announced a soundtrack release for the video game Silent Hill: Downpour. The album includes the original score from the game composed by Daniel Licht who is best known for scoring all episodes of the Showtime hit series Dexter. The soundtrack also includes the game’s theme Silent Hill by Jonathan Davis, front-man of the nu metal band Korn. The album will be released on March 13, 2012 and is now available on Amazon. Silent Hill: Downpour is the eight installment in Silent Hill series and follows Murphy Pendleton, a prisoner who is stranded in the town of Silent Hill after the prison transport vehicle he is being transported with careens off a road. Lakeshore Records has announced a second soundtrack release for last year’s drama The Rum Diary. The new album includes more music from the film’s composer Christopher Young, as well as additional tracks by artists including Dick Dale, Patti Smith, Frankie Miller, Hound Dog Taylor and The Tornados. The soundtrack will be released on February 28, 2012 digitally and will also be receiving a physical release in March. The original soundtrack album was released last October as announced here. The Rum Diary directed by Bruce Robinson and starring Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins and Amaury Nolasco was released in theaters last fall and is set for a Blu-Ray and DVD release on February 14, 2012 (click here to pre-order the Blu-Ray). Madison Gate Records will be releasing a score album for the romantic drama The Vow. The soundtrack includes the original score from the film written by composers Rachel Portman and Michael Brook. The album will be released digitally and as an Amazon On-Demand-CDR on February 7, 2012. To pre-order the CD version, visit Amazon. Sony Classical has revealed the details of the soundtrack release for the upcoming comedy The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The album includes the original score by Academy Award-nominated composer Thomas Newman. The soundtrack is set for a release in the UK on February 27, 2012. (UPDATE – April 2012): The album will be released in the US on May 1, 2012 and is available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips from all tracks on the album can be checked out below. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel marks Newman’s second collaboration with director John Madden following last year’s thriller The Debt. Lakeshore Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the animated TV series Transformers Prime. The album includes the original music from the first season of the show composed by Brian Tyler (The Expendables, Eagle Eye). The soundtrack is currently scheduled for a release on March 20, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips from all tracks on the album can be checked out below. Transformers Prime executive produced by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Transformers‘ feature films) and Jeff Kline chronicles the triumphant return of the Autobots. The show’s first season premiered in the 2010/2011 TV season and is set for a DVD and Blu-Ray release on March 6 (click here to pre-order the set). John Williams has won the Annie Award in the Music in a Feature Production category for his score for Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin at tonight’s 39th Annie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, which was hosted by Patton Oswalt. The other contenders in the category were Henry Jackman (Puss in Boots), Mikael Mutti, Siedah Garrett, Carlinhos Brown, Sergio Mendes & John Powell (Rio) and Zooey Deschannel, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, Henry Jackman & Robert Lopez (Winnie The Pooh). Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the supernatural thriller Chronicle directed by Josh Trank and starring Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell and Ashley Hinshaw. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring 14 electro and indie rock tracks from the movie by artists including Blond Acid Cult, The LongCut, Bad Veins, Simian Mobile Disco, Deastro, Ab & The Sea, Capsule, Congorock and M83. Also opening wide is the gothic horror thriller The Woman in Black directed by James Watkins and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Sophie Stuckey and Liz White. The film’s score is composed by Marco Beltrami. Silva Screen Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally next Tuesday, February 7 and the CD version is set for a release on March 27. Julian Wass and Robert Mervak are writing the music for the upcoming romantic action comedy Outrun. The film is directed by Dax Shepard and David Palmer. Shepard has also has written the screenplay and stars in the movie as a former getaway driver living in the Witness Protection Program who breaks out of anonymity in order to drive his girlfriend cross-country to Los Angeles only to find himself chased by cops and his former gang members. Kristen Bell, Bradley Cooper, Tom Arnold, Beau Bridges, Kristin Chenoweth, David Koechner, Michael Rosenbaum, Joy Bryant and Ryan Hansen are also starring in the film. Varese Sarabande has revealed the cover art and track list for the score release of Universal Pictures’ and Illumination Entertainment’s animated feature Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax. The album incudes the original score from the movie by John Powell. The soundtrack will be released on March 6, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax directed by Ken Daurio and Cinco Paul revolves around a boy who searches for a way to win the affection of the girl of his dreams and comes across the story of the Lorax, a charming creature who fights to protect his world.
