Weekly Film Music Roundup (June 24, 2011)

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Pixar’s animated film Cars 2 directed by John Lasseter is expected to top the weekend box office. The film’s music is composed by Michael Giacchino. A soundtrack album featuring five songs, as well as Giacchino’s score has been released by Walt Disney Records. Also opening wide is the comedy Bad Teacher directed by Jake Kasdan and starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel. The film’s score is written by Michael Andrews. David Newman Joins Academy Board

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that composer David Newman is among this year’s first-time electees to serve the Academy’s Board of Governors. He joins composers Bruce Broughton and Charles Fox as a governor for the Academy’s music branch.  Fourteen of the Academy’s 15 branches are represented by three governors, who may serve up to three consecutive three-year terms.  Terms are staggered so that each branch elects or reelects one governor each year. This year’s other new board members include cinematographer Richard P. Crudo, producer Gale Anne Hurd and film editor Michael Tronick.

Fred Steiner Passes Away at 88

Fred Steiner has died at the age of 88. The composer was born on February 24, 1923 in New York. Best known for writing the piece Park Avenue Beat, which was used as the theme for the hit TV show Perry Mason, he also wrote music for such shows as Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, Gunsmoke, Hogan’s Heroes, Hotel, Lost in Space, Hawaii Five-O, Dynasty and Amazing Stories. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film The Color Purple as one of the composers credited for writing the music for the movie alongside lead composer Quincy Jones.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weeekend box office is the comic book adaptation Green Lantern directed by Martin Campbell and starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Saarsgard and Mark Strong. The film’s music is composed by James Newton Howard. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score has been released by Watertower Music. Also opening wide is Mark Water’s family comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins starring Jim Carrey, Carla Gugino, Madeline Carroll and Angela Lansbury. The movie’s score is written by composer Rolfe Kent. Terence Blanchard and Graeme Revell Invited to Join the Academy

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 178 new artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures to join the organization. Among the invited artists are two film composers (Terence Blanchard, Graeme Revell) and one music editor (Fernand Bos). Terence Blanchard has been working in the film music industry for more than 20 years. He is best known for his collaborations with Spike Lee, including his music for the Oscar-nominated drama Malcom X, the 2006 hit thriller Inside Man and the drama The 25th Hour, for which the composer has received a Golden Globe nomination. Blanchard has recently recorded his score for the George Lucas-produced drama Red Tails, which is rumored to be released in early 2012. Graeme Revell has been scoring films since the late 80’s. Some of his best known credits include The Crow, The Negotiator, The Siege, Pitch Black, Lara Croft: Tom Raider, Daredevil and Pineapple Express.

‘Breakdown’ Limited Edition Set released

La-La Land Records has released a new limited edition of the soundtrack for the 1997 thriller Breakdown. The film’s music by Basil Poledouris comes in 3-CD set. Disc One features the Final Revised Film Score, Disc Two contains the Alternate Early Film Score and Disc Three contains additional Alternates. Additional music is by Richard Marvin, Eric Colvin, Steve Forman and Judd Miller. The set is limited to 3000 copies and is available to order on La-La Land Records website. Breakdown is directed by Jonathan Mostow (U-571, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Surrogates) and stars Kurt Russell, Kathleen Quinlan and J.T. Walsh.

‘Snow Flower and the Secret Fan’ Soundtrack Details

Sony Classical has revealed the details for the soundtrack release of the upcoming drama Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. The album includes 18 tracks from the original score by Rachel Portman. The soundtrack will be released on  July 12, 2011 and is now available to pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added soon. Snow Flower and the Secret Fan directed by Wayne Wang is set in 19th century China and centers on the lifelong friendship between two girls who develop their own secret code as a way to contend with the rigid cultural norms imposed on women. The film will be released on July 15 by Fox Searchlight.

Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Super 8 directed by J.J. Abrams, produced by Steven Spielberg and staring Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Ron Eldard, Kyle Chandler and Noah Emmerich is opening in most features music composed by Michael Giacchino. As previously announced on this page, Varese Sarabande will be releasing a score album on June 28. Visit MTV Movie Blog for a video interview with Giacchino from the Super 8 premiere and check out a recent article in Variety about the composer’s newest projects. More interviews are expected to appear in the next couple of weeks.

Also opening wide this weekend is the kid’s pic Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer directed by John Schultz and starring Jordana Beatty in the title role, as well as Heather Graham and Jaleel White. Richard Gibbs has written the film’s score. The music was recorded with an 80-piece orchestra at the Newman Scoring Stage on the 20th Century Fox lot in Los Angeles. Only one new movie is opening wide this weekend:

Matthew Vaughn’s comic book adaptation X-Men: First Class starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence and Rosamunde Pike is expected to top the weekend box office. The film’s music is written by Henry Jackman and a soundtrack album has been released digitally earlier this week by Sony Classical. A physical release will follow on June 28. Opening in limited release is the dramedy Beginners directed by Mike Mills and starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Melanie Laurent. The film’s score is composed by Roger Neill, David Palmer and Brian Reitzell. The movie also features a number of songs. Angelo Badalamenti and Alf Clausen to Receive Honors at ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has announced today that composers Angelo Badalamenti and Alf Clausen will be honored at the 26th Annual ASCAP Film and Television Music Awards on June 23, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Badalamenti will be receiving the ASCAP Henry Mancini Award, which is awarded to composers in recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions to the world of film and television music. The composer is best known for his scores for director David Lynch who will be presenting Badalamenti with the award at the ceremony. His credits include Blue Velvet, Twin Peaks, The City of Lost Children and A Very Long Engagement. He also has been nominated for two Golden Globes for his scores for The Straight Story and Mulholland Drive.
