Premiering tomorrow night is the new drama Monday Mornings created by David E. Kelley and starring Alfred Molina, Ving Rhames, Jamie Bamber, Jennifer Finnigan, Bill Irwin, Keong Sim, Sarayu Rao and Emily Swallow. The show’s music is composed by Danny Lux (Grey’s Anatomy) who has previously worked with Kelley on such shows as Ally McBeal and Boston Legal. BMI Sundance Roundtable Videos
BMI has published several videos from last week’s film composer/director roundtable Music & Film: The Creative Process at the Sundance Film Festival. Participants include composer Terence Blanchard, composer Mark Isham and director George Tillman, Jr. whose drama The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete premiered at the festival, composer Ludwig Goransson and writer/director Ryan Cogler whose feature Fruitvale received the top Sundance honor and was picked up for distribution by The Weinstein Company, composer Rob Simonsen and director James Ponsoldt whose coming of age drama The Spectacular Now was acquired by A24 for a theatrical release (Simonsen also scored the comedy The Way, Way Back, which was picked up by Fox Searchlight as the biggest sale at the festival), composer Abel Korzeniowski and director Randy Moore who worked together on the controversial Disney theme park-set Escape from Tomorrow, composer Dustin O’Halloran who scored the indie drama Breathe In, his second project for Drake Doremus following Like Crazy and composer Craig Wedren and director Jill Solloway who collaborated on the comedy Afternoon Delight.
Terence Blanchard Scoring ‘Betty and Coretta’
Golden Globe-nominated composer Terence Blanchard has composed the score for the new Lifetime original movie Betty and Coretta. The film directed by Yves Simoneau (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee) tells the dual stories of Coretta Scott King and Dr. Betty Shabazz as they carry on as single mothers following the assassinations of their husbands, Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. Angela Bassett plays Coretta King, while Mary J. Blige portays Betty Shabazz. Ruby Dee,Malik Yoba, Lindsay Owne Pierre, Gloria Reuben, Cherise Booth and Shinelle Azoroh are co-starring. Shem Bitterman & Ron Hutchinson (The Josephine Baker Story) have written the script and Blige is executive producing the project with Larry Sanitsky, Jaja Johnson and Polly Anthony. Blanchard has previously scored the similarly themed drama Malcolm X for director Spike Lee.
‘Power of Story: Measure for Measure’ Sundance Panel Announced
This year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature the composer panel Power of Story: Measure for Measure. The event will be moderated by Chris Douridas (KCRW-FM’s daily music program Morning Becomes Eclectic) and will include such participants as Academy Award-nominated composer Mark Isham who co-scored the indie drama The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete with Alicia Keys. This marks the composer’s first time attending Sundance for a film he scored. As previously reported, he is also participating in the BMI composer/director roundtable with director George Tillman Jr. Other participants of the Power of Story: Measure for Measure panel include five-time Grammy Award winner and Golden Globe-nominated composer Terence Blanchard (The 25th Hour, Inside Man, Malcolm X) whose opera on boxing legend Emile Griffith premieres in June 2013, as well as Academy Award-winning composer Jan A. P. Kaczmarek (Finding Neverland, Unfaithful) who established the Transatlantyk Poznan International Film and Music Festival and the Instytut Rozbitek in his home country Poland, which is aimed at developing new talent in the arts.

A couple of new shows are premiering on the major networks this week:
Premiering on Wednesday, October 10 is the superhero drama Arrow based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Mark Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg and starring Stephen Amell, Katie Cassidy, Susanna Thompson, Willa Holland and Colin Salmon. The show’s score is composed by Blake Neely (The Mentalist, Everwood, Brothers & Sisters). The composer recorded the music for the pilot with a full 80 piece orchestra at the Warner Bros. Terence Blanchard Scoring ‘Abducted: The Carlina White Story’
Terence Blanchard has composed the score for the Lifetime original movie Abducted: The Carlina White Story. The film directed by Vondie Curtis-Hall is based on the true story of the kidnapping of Carlina White, who was abducted as an infant by Ann Pettway from a New York hospital and solved her own kidnapping and reunited with her biological parents 23 years later. The movie’s cast includes Aunjanue Ellis (The Help), Keke Palmer, Sherri Shepherd and Roger Cross. Craig Piligian, Mary Martin and Alan Gasmer are executive producing the Pilgrim Studios production. Elizabeth Hunter (Jumping the Broom) has written the script.

Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is action horror sequel Underworld Awakening directed by Mans Marlin & Bjorn Stein and starring Kate Beckinsale, Sandrine Holt, Michael Ealy and India Eisley. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack featuring the movie’s songs by artists including Evanescence, Linkin Park, The Cure, Ministry and Lacuna Coil this past Tuesday (click here for our announcement). A separate soundtrack album featuring the film’s original score by Paul Haslinger and three more songs will be released next Tuesday (click here for the full details and audio clips).
Also opening nationwide is the George Lucas-produced WWII drama Red Tails directed by Anthony Hemingway stars Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terrence Howard and Bryan Cranston. Terence Blanchard has written the score for the film. Sony Classical has released the official soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music digitally earlier this week and the CD version is scheduled to come out next month. ‘Red Tails’ Soundtrack Details
Sony Masterworks will be releasing the soundtrack album for the WWII drama Red Tails. The album includes the original score from the movie composed by Terence Blanchard (Inside Man, The 25th Hour). The soundtrack will be released on February 7, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips from all tracks on the album can be checked out below. Terence Blanchard and Graeme Revell Invited to Join the Academy
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has invited 178 new artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures to join the organization. Among the invited artists are two film composers (Terence Blanchard, Graeme Revell) and one music editor (Fernand Bos). Terence Blanchard has been working in the film music industry for more than 20 years. He is best known for his collaborations with Spike Lee, including his music for the Oscar-nominated drama Malcom X, the 2006 hit thriller Inside Man and the drama The 25th Hour, for which the composer has received a Golden Globe nomination. Blanchard has recently recorded his score for the George Lucas-produced drama Red Tails, which is rumored to be released in early 2012. Graeme Revell has been scoring films since the late 80’s. Some of his best known credits include The Crow, The Negotiator, The Siege, Pitch Black, Lara Croft: Tom Raider, Daredevil and Pineapple Express.

While Terence Blanchard has announced his involvement in the WWII drama Red Tails almost two years ago, some details on the film’s music have finally been revealed. Jazz Corner (via The Playlist) reports that the score will be recorded this June in Prague. The movie produced by George Lucas is based on the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II and tells the story of a group of African-American combat pilots at battle. The film stars Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terrence Howard and Bryan Cranston. The project will be the first non-Star Wars or Indiana Jones picture from Lucasfilm in almost 20 years. The drama is directed by Anthony Hemingway (Treme, True Blood) and John Ridley (U-Turn, Three Kings) has written the screenplay based on an story by Lucas.
