Rachel Portman has been tapped to score Diablo Cody’s currently untitled directorial feature debut. The comedy written and directed by the Academy Award-winning writer (Juno, Young Adult) writer stars Julianne Hough, Russell Brand, Octavia Spencer and Holly Hunter. The movie follows a sheltered young woman who loses her faith after a plane crash and goes to Las Vegas to experience the wild life, where she meets an unlikely companion who helps her find her true self. Mason Novick (500 Days of Summer, Juno) is producing and Nathan Kahane (50/50, Stranger Than Fiction) is executive producing the Mandate Pictures production. No word yet on when the film will be released.

Rachel Portman Scoring ‘Private Peaceful’
Rachel Portman is currently writing the music for the upcoming British drama Private Peaceful. The film is directed by Pat O’Connor and stars Jack O’Connell, George Mackay, Alexander Roach, Richard Griffiths and Frances de la Tour. The movie set in the fields of Devon and the WWI battlefields of Flanders is based on a novel by Michael Morpurgo (War Horse) and tells the story of two brothers who fall in love with the same girl. Simon Reade adapted the material for the screen and is also producing the film with Guy de Beaujeu. No word yet on whether any music by Mark Knopfler who was announced as the film’s composers by various news outlets last years will still be featured in the film. Pat O’Connor previously worked with composers including Michael Kamen (Circle of Friends, Inventing the Abbotts) and Christopher Young (Sweet November).
‘Bel Ami’ Soundtrack Details
Varese Sarabande has announced the details for the upcoming period drama Bel Ami. The album includes the original score from the film written by Lakshman Joseph De Saram and Academy Award-winning composer Rachel Portman. The soundtrack will be released on March 20, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Bel Ami is directed by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod and stars Robert Pattinson, Uma Thurman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Christina Ricci and Colm Meaney. The film revolves around a young man’s rise to power in Paris via his manipulation of the city’s most influential and wealthy women. The drama recently premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and will be released in the UK on March 9, 2012. A domestic release through Magnolia Pictures is expected later this year.

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action thriller Safe House directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Liam Cunningham, Brendan Gleeson, Robert Patrick and Sam Shepard. The film’s score is written by Ramin Djawadi. Varese Sarabande Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide this week is the romantic drama The Vow directed by Michael Sucsy and starring Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill, Scott Speedman, Wendy Crewson and Jessica Lange. Madison Gate Records will be releasing a score album for the romantic drama The Vow. The soundtrack includes the original score from the film written by composers Rachel Portman and Michael Brook. The album will be released digitally and as an Amazon On-Demand-CDR on February 7, 2012. To pre-order the CD version, visit Amazon. Four new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in almost 3000 theaters is the horror comedy Fright Night directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Please, David Tennant and Toni Collette. The film’s music is composed by Ramin Djawadi. A soundtrack CD will be released on August 30, 2011 by Varese Sarabande. Also opening wide is the action remake of Conan the Barbarian directed by Marcus Nispel and starring Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rachel Nichols, Rose McGowan and Stephen Lang. Aaron Zigman Taking Over ‘I Don’t Know How She Does It’
Aaron Zigman has taken over scoring duties on the romantic comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It. He is replacing Rachel Portman who was originally attached to score the movie as reported earlier this summer. The film directed by Douglas McGrath stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear, Christina Hendricks, Kelsey Grammer, Seth Meyers and Olivia Munn. The comedy follows a working mother who is desperately trying to juggle marriage, children and a high-stress job as a financial executive. Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, Morning Glory) wrote the screenplay based on a novel by Allison Pearson. Zigman has previously scored the Sarah Jessica Parker-starring film adaptations of Sex and the City. I Don’t Know How She Does It is scheduled to be released on September 16, 2011 by The Weinstein Company.
‘One Day’ Soundtrack announced
Universal-Island Records has announced the soundtrack album for the upcoming romance One Day. The album features four tracks from the score by Oscar-winning composer Rachel Portman, as well as a number of songs from the movie by artists including Elvis Costello, Del Amitri, Tricky, Fatboy Slim, Primal Scream, Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating, Corona and Tears for Fears. One Day based on the bestselling novel by David Nicholls is directed by Lorne Scherfig and stars Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess and Patricia Clarkson. Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Already beating box office records is the fantasy sequel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. The film’s music is composed by Alexandre Desplat who scored his second Harry Potter film. A soundtrack album featuring Desplat’ score has been released on Watertower Music (click here for our soundtrack announcement including audio clips). Also opening wide is Walt Disney Pictures’ animated film Winnie the Pooh. Henry Jackman composed the score for the movie. Michael Brook Co-Scoring ‘The Vow’
Michael Brook (The Fighter, Into the Wild) has recently co-written the music for the upcoming romantic drama The Vow. As reported last year, Rachel Portman has also been working on the project. The movie starring Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill, Scott Speedman, Wendy Crewson and Jessica Lange centers on a newlywed couple that recovers from a car accident that puts the wife in a coma. Waking up with severe memory loss, her husband endeavors to win her heart again. The film is directed by Michael Suscy who worked with Portman on the Emmy-winning drama Grey Gardens. Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum, Jonathan Glickman and Paul Taublieb are producing The Vow. Screen Gems has set a release date for the drama on February 10, 2012.
