Fall 2011 Television Music Roundup (Part 4): NBC

In our fourth part of our fall television music series, we are taking a look at the new and returning shows on NBC:

Among the new shows on the network that premiered this fall is the fantasy crime drama Grimm created by David Greenwalt & Jim Kouf and starring Russell Hornsby, David Giuntoli, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz and Reggie Lee. The show’s score is written by Richard Marvin (U-571, Surrogates, Six Feet Under). The drama centers on a homicide detective who learns that he is a descendent of a group known as “Grimms” who fight to keep humanity safe from the supernatural creatures of the world. Grimm currently airs every Friday night on NBC and is expected to receive a full season order in the near future.

Trevor Morris to Score NBC’s ‘The Firm’

Trevor Morris has signed on to score the TV series adaptation of the legal thriller The Firm. The show is based on the bestselling novel by John Grisham and the feature film adaptation starring Tom Cruise. Josh Lucas stars as attorney Mitchell McDeere who brought down the prestigious Memphis law firm of Bendini, Lambert & Locke, which operated as a front for the Chicago mob. After a difficult decade, McDeere and his family now emerge from isolation to reclaim their lives and their future, only to find that past dangers are still lurking and new threats are everywhere. Juliette Lewis, Callum Keith Rennie, Molly Parker and Natasha Calis are co-starring in the show. David Straiton (House, Fringe) directed the pilot and Helen Shaver (Judging Amy) is producing alongside Lukas Reiter (Law & Order), John Morayniss (Hung), Michael Rosenberg (Hung) and Noreen Halpern (Rookie Blue).

Bear McCreary’s ‘The Cape’ Score Released

La-La Land Records has released a soundtrack album for the NBC superhero drama The Cape. The 2CD-set includes selections of the original score from the show by composer Bear McCreary. More than 150 minutes of music is included on the 2 disc release, which is limited to 2000 copies. The Cape created by Tom Wheeler and starring David Lyons, Keith David and Summer Glau aired earlier this year on NBC and the complete series is available on DVD.

Reinhold Heil & Johnny Klimek to Reunite with Tom Tykwer on ‘Cloud Atlas’

Reinhold Heil, Johnny Klimek and Tom Tykwer have recently written and recorded music for the director’s upcoming sci-fi feature Cloud Atlas. The movie written and co-directed by Andy & Lana Wachowski and Tykwer stars Tom Hanks, Jim Sturgess, Halle Berry, Hugo Weaving, Susan Sarandon, Hugh Grant, Keith David, Ben Whishaw and Jim Broadbent. The film based on the novel by David Mitchell intertwines six stories spanning different times that sees one character shaped from a murderer to a savior. Stefan Arndt (Run Lola Run) and Philip Lee are producing with Tykwer and the Wachowskis. Heil and Klimek have been collaborating with Tykwer on the music for most of the director’s previous features, most recently on the Clive Owen- and Naomi Watts-starring thriller The International and the German language film 3.

Wendy & Lisa to Score NBC’s ‘Prime Suspect’

Wendy & Lisa are scoring the upcoming NBC police procedural drama Prime Suspect. The show is based on the BBC series with the same title starring Helen Mirren. Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom) directed the pilot and is also executive producing the project. Alexandra Cunningham (Desperate Housewives) has written the pilot’s script and will also be producing the project. The series stars Maria Bello as as Jane Timoney, a female detective struggling to make her bones in a tough New York precinct dominated by men. Aidan Quinn, Kirk Acevedo, Joe Nieves and Brian O’Byrne. The show is produced by Universal Media Studio, for which the composer duo of Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman have previously scored such shows as Heroes, Bionic Woman and Mercy.

Richard Marvin to Score NBC’s ‘Grimm’

Richard Marvin is scoring the new NBC fantasy crime drama Grimm. The show created by David Greenwalt (Angel) and Jim Kouf (Rush Hour, National Treasure) is inspired by the Grimm’s fairy tales and revolves around a homicide detective learns that he is a descendent of a group of hunters known as “Grimms”, who fight to keep humanity safe from the supernatural creatures of the world. The series stars Russell Hornsby, David Giuntoli, Bitsie Tulloch, Silas Weir Mitchell, Sasha Roiz and Reggie Lee. Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) and Todd Milliner (Hot in Cleveland) are executive producing alongside Greenwalt amd Kouf. Marc Buckland (Murder One, My Name is Earl) directed the pilot.

2011 Summer Television Music Roundup (Part 1)

With an increasing number of major TV shows premiering during the summer months, Film Music Reporter presents a listing of this summer’s original shows and their composers. Featured in Part 1 of the Summer TV Roundup are the original shows on the networks (ABC, NBC, CBS), as well as on USA and Showtime. Check back for Part 2 to appear on this page soon.

ABC:

Airing every Tuesday night on the network is the drama Combat Hospital. The show centers on a group of doctors and nurses from Canada, the U.S., the U.K. and other allied countries saving lives and limbs in a war zone military hospital modeled on a real facility in Afghanistan. Deborah Kara Unger, Michelle Borth, Elias Koteas, Terry Chen, Arnold Pinnock and Luke Mably are starring. The show’s music is composed by Edmund Butt (The Dark, Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes) and additional music is written by Samuel Sim (The Deep).

Brian Reitzell to Score Starz’s ‘Boss’

Brian Reitzell has signed on to score the Starz series Boss. The show stars Kelsey Grammer as the Mayor of Chicago who is diagnosed with a degenerative mental condition that only he and his doctor know about. Kathleen Robinson, Martin Donovan, Jeff Hephner, Connie Nielsen and Hannah Ware are co-starring. The project is created by Farhad Safinia (co-writer of Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto). Gus Van Sant (Milk, Good Will Hunting) directed the show’s pilot. Grammer, Safinia and Grammer are producing with Richard Levine & Lyn Greene (Nip/Tuck), as well as Brian Sher and Stella Stolper. Apart from scoring the show, Reitzell will also serve as the music supervisor on the project.

‘The Event’ Score by Scott Starrett released

Earlier this week, a soundtrack album for the NBC sci-fi mystery drama The Event has been released. The album features 27 tracks of the original score from the show composed by Scott Starrett. The soundtrack is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also listen to sound clips from all tracks. To learn more about the composer’s score on the project, check out two video interviews below courtesy of ASCAP and BuzzFocus.com. The Event created by Nick Wauters stars Jason Ritter, Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr. and Blair Underwood. While NBC didn’t pick up the show for a second season, there have been talks about a possible future for the show on cable.

David Schwartz to Score NBC’s ‘The Playboy Club’

David Schwartz has signed on to score the NBC drama The Playboy Club. The show is set against the background of the political and moral changes in the 1960s and follows the legendary Playboy Club in Chicago. Eddie Cibrian stars as a Chicago attorney who is also a keyholder at the glamorous club. The series is created by Chad Hodge (Tru Calling, Runaway) and Amber Heard, Leah Renee, Jenna Dewan, Laura Benanti, David Krumholtz, Naturi Naughton and Wes Ramsey are co-starring. Alan Taylor (The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Sopranos) has directed the pilot. Brian Grazer is among the show’s producers through his Imagine Television company (24, Friday Night Lights, Parenthood).
