Weekly Film Music Roundup (July 15, 2022)

Opening in theaters nationwide this weekend is the mystery drama Where the Crawdads Sing directed by Olivia Newman and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson and David Strathairn. The film’s original music is composed by Mychael Danna (Life of Pi, Capote, Moneyball, Little Miss Sunshine, The Good Dinosaur, Onward). Mercury Classics has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the original song Carolina written and performed by Taylor Swift today. Also opening wide is the animated comedy Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank directed by Rob Minkoff, Mark Koetsier & Chris Bailey and starring Michael Cera, Ricky Gervais, George Takei, Mel Brooks, Michelle Yeoh and Samuel L. Jackson. Bear McCreary (10 Cloverfield Lane, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Outlander, The Walking Dead) has composed the film’s original score. Sparks and Shadows has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as two songs written by Alan Zachary & Michael Weiner. ‘Flannery’ Soundtrack to Be Released

Perseverance Records will release a soundtrack album for the documentary Flannery. The album features the film’s original score composed by Miriam Cutler (RBG, The Hunting Ground, Love, Gilda, Ethel, Dark Money). The soundtrack will be released digitally on February 5, 2021 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Flannery is directed by Elizabeth Coffman & Mark Bosco and centers on the life and work of author Flannery O’Connor, whose distinctive Southern Gothic style influenced a generation of artists and activists. The movie includes conversations with those who knew her and those inspired by her (Mary Karr, Tommy Lee Jones, Lucinda Williams & others), as well as newly discovered personal letters and her own published words (read by Mary Steenburgen), original animations and music.

‘Love, Gilda’ Soundtrack Released

Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album for the documentary Love, Gilda. The album features the film’s original score composed by Miriam Cutler (RBG, The Hunting Ground, Dark Money) who has recently received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her work on the project. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon, where you can also check out audio clips. Love, Gilda is directed by Lisa D’Apolito and centers on performer Gilda Radner and her childhood, her comedy career, her relationships and ultimately, her struggles with cancer.

Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the gothic fantasy movie The House with a Clock in Its Walls directed by Eli Roth and starring Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Owen Vaccaro, Kyle MacLachlan, Collen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams and Sunny Suljic. The film’s original music is composed by Nathan Barr (True Blood, The Americans, Hostel, Cabin Fever). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide is the drama Life Itself written and directed by Dan Fogelman and starring Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Mandy Patinkin, Olivia Cooke, Laia Costa, Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas. Federico Jusid (The Secret in Their Eyes, Kidnap, Misconduct, The Hunter’s Prayer) has composed the film’s original score. No soundtrack album has been announced. John Williams Honored at BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards

Last night, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) held its annual Film, TV & Visual Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. John Williams was honored with the John Williams Award for his incomparable status as one of the greatest film and television composers of our time. The composer who was previously honored with BMI’s Kirk Award in 1999 and who also received two more BMI Awards this year for his scores for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and The Post was presented the award by the evening’s host, BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer-Ross and BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill.

Opening in most theaters is the thriller Bad Samaritan directed by Dean Devlin and starring David Tennant, Robert Sheehan, Kerry Condon, Carlito Olivero, Jacqueline Byers, Tracey Heggins and Robert P. Nagle. The film’s original music is composed by Joseph LoDuca (The Evil Dead, Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Ash vs Evil Dead). Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Overboard directed by Rob Greenberg & Bob Fisher and starring Eugenio Derbez, Anna Faris, Eva Longoria, John Hannah and Cecilia Suarez. Lyle Workman (The 40-Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Love, Crashing, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) has composed the film’s original score. John Williams to Be Honored at BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards

BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) announced today that it will present legendary film composer John Williams with a special award bearing his name in recognition of his incomparable status as one of the greatest film and television composers of our time. The John Williams Award will be presented for the first time at the 34th annual BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards on Wednesday, May 9 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. Williams previously received the organization’s The Kirk Award in 1999, which later became the BMI Icon Award, for composing some of the most popular and recognizable scores in cinematic history such as the Star Wars series, Jaws, Schindler’s List, the Indiana Jones series, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, among many others.
