Opening in select theaters today is the documentary Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down directed by Julie Cohen & Betsy West about the former Arizona Congresswoman and her fight to recover following an assassination attempt in 2011. Miriam Cutler (RBGThe Hunting GroundLove, Gilda, Dark Money, Flannery, Ethel) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being distributed by Briarcliff Entertainment.

Opening in select theaters this weekend before premiering on Netflix on July 22 is the action thriller The Gray Man directed by Anthony & Joe Russo and starring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jessica Henwick, Regé-Jean Page, Dhanush, Alfre Woodard, Wagner Moura, Julia Butters and Billy Bob Thornton. The film’s original music is composed by Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Wreck-It-RalphJumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, X-Men: First Class). Netflix Music has released a first track from the composer’s score today (click here to listen) and a full soundtrack album will be released next Friday, July 22.

Also opening in select U.S. theaters this week is the Japanese animated feature The Deer King (Shika no Ou) directed by Masashi Ando & Masayuki Miyaji based on Nahoko Uehashi’s book series. Harumi Fuuki (Chronicle of My MotherDigimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna) has composed the film’s original music. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score was released earlier this year when the movie opened in Japanese theaters. The movie, which revolves around a group of young ICE detainees who are offered a chance to avoid deportation by joining a program to help the elderly, is being released by Saban Films.

Another movie opening in select theaters and on VOD today is the drama The Royal directed by Marcel Sarmiento and starring Amin Joseph, Elisabeth Rohm, Olivia Taylor Cruz and Andrea Navedo. Jeff Cardoni (Silicon ValleyThe Kominsky Method, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, CSI: Miami) has composed the film’s original music. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie, which centers on baseball legend Willie Mays Aikens, is being distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Films.
