Columbia Records will release the soundtrack for Bombshell, the musical within NBC’s hit show Smash. The album features 22 original songs that make up the Broadway-caliber cast recording of the musical. The songs composed by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman on the Bombshell soundtrack span both seasons of Smash. The soundtrack will be released on February 12, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips will be added to this article soon. A previous soundtrack album featuring songs from the first season has been released last spring. Smash starring Katherine McPhee, Megan Hilty, Debra Messing, Tom Levitt, Christian Borle and Anjelica Huston has been nominated for several Emmy Awards (including two nods for the music) and is up for Best Comedy/Musical at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. The first season of the musical show has just been released on DVD earlier this week. The second season of the series will premiere on Tuesday, February 5 on NBC.

Three new movies have opened nationwide earlier this week on Christmas Day:
Topping the box office on Christmas Day was the movie musical Les Miserables directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Eddie Redmayne, Colm Wilkinson, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. Universal Republic has released a soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs composed by Claude-Michel Schonberg, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and produced and arranged by Anne Dudley. Also included is the new original song Suddenly composed by Schonberg and featuring lyrics by Alain Boublil. To find out more about the soundtrack and film, check out our previous article.
Also performing well in wide release is the western Django Unchained written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz. Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. Loma Vista Recording has released a soundtrack album featuring a couple of new original tracks, including 100 Black Coffins by Rick Ross and produced by and featuring Jamie Foxx, Who Did That To You? by John Legend, Ancora Qui by Ennio Morricone and Elisa, and the duet Freedom performed by Anthony Hamilton and Elayna Boynton. Comic-Con 2012 Film Music Panel Roundup
Following our previous report on the film music-related events at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, more film composers have been announced to participate in the Behind the Music with CW3PR: Perfect Sound for TV & Film panel. In addition to the previously announced Trevor Morris, Robert Duncan and Danny Jacob, as well as singers Lisbeth Scott and Laura Dickinson, Marc Shaiman has joined the panel. The composer is coming off co-writing the songs, as well as scoring the first six episodes of the first season of NBC’s Smash, which he also executive produced. Another recent addition is composer/songwriter Michael Penn who recently scored the first season of the new HBO hit comedy Girls created by Lena Dunham and produced by Judd Apatow. The final addition to the panel is iZLER, composer of ABC’s hit drama Revenge.

Three new movies are opening in wide release this week:
Already in theaters since this past Tuesday is the comic boot film reboot The Amazing Spider-Man directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as The Lizard, as well as Martin Sheen, Sally Field and Denis Leary. The film’s music is composed and conducted by James Horner. Sony Classical has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Also opening wide is the crime drama Savages directed by Oliver Stone and starring Aaron Johnson, Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Uma Thurman, Emile Hirsch, Demian Bichir, Joel David Moore and John Travolta. Adam Peters has composed the film’s original score. Back Lot Music and Varese Sarabande have released a soundtrack album featuring selections from the score, as well as some of the movie’s songs by artists including Bob Dylan, Peter Tosh, Massive Attack and Thievery Corporation. ‘The Magic of Belle Isle’ to Feature Music by Marc Shaiman
Marc Shaiman has scored the upcoming drama The Magic of Belle Isle. The film is directed by Rob Reiner and stars Morgan Freeman as a wheelchair-bound Western novelist who takes a lakeside cabin for the summer in Belle Isle and befriends the family next door – an attractive single mom and her young daughters – who help him find inspiration again. Virginia Madsen, Madeline Carroll and Kenan Thompson are co-starring. Guy Thomas has written the script with Reiner and Andrew Scheinman and Salli Newman and David Valdes (The Green Mile, The Book of Eli) are producing the Castle Rock Entertainment production. Reiner has collaborated with Shaiman on all of his major features since 1989’s When Harry Met Sally…, including on such hit films as Misery, A Few Good Men, An American President and The Bucket List.
‘Smash’ Soundtrack Announced
Columbia Records will be releasing the first original soundtrack album for the NBC musical drama Smash. The Music of Smash features original songs from the show written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, as well several cover versions performed by the show’s cast members including Katherine McPhee, Megan Hilty and Will Chase. Also included is the Ryan Fedder-produced original song Touch Me from last week’s episode. The soundtrack will be released on May 1, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Most songs featured in the already aired episodes are also available to download individually on iTunes and Amazon (click here for our last update). Smash has recently been renewed for a second season and currently airs every Monday night on NBC.
Chris Bacon to Score NBC’s ‘Smash’
Chris Bacon has been chosen by Smash executive producer and composer Marc Shaiman to write the underscore for this season’s remaining episodes of the musical show. Shaiman has written the series’ underscore himself for the first six episodes and Bacon has taken over scoring duties with episode 7 (The Workshop), which premiered last night. Shaiman and Scott Wittman continue to write the show’s original songs. Since our last update, several new songs have been released digitally, including the Shaiman- & Wittman-penned original songs The 20th Century Fox Mambo (performed by Katherine McPhee), I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn’t Love to Howl (performed by Megan Hilty), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (performed by Hilty and Will Chase), Let’s Be Bad (performed by Hilty) and History Is Made at Night (performed by Hilty and Chase), as well cover versions of It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World (performed by McPhee), A Song for You (performed by Chase), Crazy Dreams (performed by Hilty), Call Me (performed by McPhee), Grenade (performed by Chase) and I Haven’t Met You Yet (performed by Nick Jones).
Marc Shaiman to Score ‘Parental Guidance’
Marc Shaiman has signed on to score the upcoming family comedy Parental Guidance. The movie is directed by Andy Fickman (The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain) and stars Billy Crystal and Bette Middler as two grandparents who struggle with their grandkids’ modern ways and soon resort to an old-school style of parenting. Marisa Tomei, Bailey Madison and Tom Everett Scott are co-starring. Crystal, Peter Chernin & Dylan Clark (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and Samantha Sprecher are producing the 20th Century Fox and Walden Media co-production.
‘Smash’ Premieres Tonight on NBC
The musical drama Smash is premiering tonight on NBC. The show features original songs written by Academy Award-nominated composer Marc Shaiman (Hairspray, South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut) and Scott Wittman who are also also executive producing the show. Shaiman is also writing the original score. Columbia Records has already released the first two songs from the series’ pilot, including Let Me Be Your Star (performed by Katherine McPhee and Megan Hilty) and The National Pastime. Both songs are available to download on iTunes. A third song from the pilot, a cover version of Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful (performed by Katherine McPhee) will be released on February 13. ‘Catch Me If You Can’ Broadway Cast Recording Album released
Ghostlight Records has released the official Broadway cast recording album of the musical Catch Me If You Can. While we usually don’t cover stage musical productions on this page, it’s worth mentioning because of the involvement of film composer Marc Shaiman who wrote the music for the project alongside lyricist Scott Wittman (Hairspray). The album includes 17 songs from the musical. Check out the audio clips below for a preview of all tracks. The digital version is now available to download on Amazon and a physical CD will be released on June 28 and can be pre-ordered here. Catch Me If You Can is adapted from the 2002 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. The musical is currently playing on Broadway and was recently nominated for four Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Outstanding Orchestrations.
