Weekly Film Music Roundup (August 23, 2013)

Three new movies are opening nationwide this week:

Already in theaters since this past Wednesday is the fantasy adventure The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones directed by Harald Zwart and starring Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Aidan Turner, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Durand and Jared Harris. Republic Records has released a soundtrack featuring the film’s songs by artists including Zedd, Jessie J, AFI and Demi Lovato. Check out our previous article for the full details. The film’s original score is composed by Atli Orvarsson (Vantage Point, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score has been released on Milan Records. Also opening wide is the comedy The World’s End directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan. ABKCO Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Primal Scream, Blur, The Doors, Kylie Minogue, Soup Dragons, Suede, Pulp, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Soul II Soul (click here for the full details). Steven Price (Gravity, Attack the Block) has composed the film’s score. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Varèse Sarabande’s 35th Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday night, film music label Varèse Sarabande hosted their 35th Anniversary Concert Gala at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California. The sold out concert was hosted and produced by Varese Sarabande’s Robert Townson and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) and Chorale. The event featured a special guest performance by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer who performed a suite from Driving Miss Daisy on piano featuring Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and violinist Ann Marie Calhoun. The suite also included a preview from the composer’s score for the upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel. Additionally, Academy Award-winner Michael Giacchino (Up) conducted the world premiere of a special suite from his score for Star Trek Into Darkness and John Powell (The Bourne Trilogy) conducted a suite from his Oscar-nominated score for Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the sports drama 42 written and directed by Brian Helgeland and stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Beharie, Alan Tudyk, Christopher Meloni, Ryan Merriman, Brad Beyer and T.R. Knight. The film’s original score is composed by Mark Isham (Crash, A River Runs Through It). WaterTower Music has released two soundtracks, including an album featuring the songs from the movie and a track from Isham’s score (click here for our announcement including audio clips), as well as an album featuring the composer’s score (audio clips and the full details are available here). Also opening wide is the horror comedy sequel Scary Movie 5 directed by Malcolm Lee and stars Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan, Snoop Dogg, Katt Williams, Molly Shannon, Terry Crews, Simon Rex, Jerry O’Connell, Sarah Hyland, Katrina Bowden, Tyler Posey, Shad Moss aka Bow Wow, Kate Walsh, Heather Locklear, Mac Miller and Mike Tyson. James L. Venable (Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, EuroTrip) has composed the film’s score. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Hyper Crush, Latief Scott, Bellringer, Blind Truth featuring Georgia Harris and Tarik NuClothes on April 23. Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

The comic book adaptation Captain America:The First Avenger directed by Joe Johnston and starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci and Dominic Cooper features music by Alan Silvestri. A soundtrack album including the composer’s score has been released on Buena Vista Records. Check out our soundtrack announcement for more information and audio clips. Also featured on the album is the song Star Spangled Man (music by Alan Menken and lyrics by David Zippel). ‘A Little Help’ Soundtrack announced

Columbia Records has announced a soundtrack release for the comedy drama A Little Help. The album includes two score tracks by composer Austin Wintory (Captain Abu Raed, Grace), as well as the original song I’m Lucky co-written by Wintory and Céleigh Chapman. Also featured on the soundtrack are Jakob Dylan with three original songs, Rob Benedict’s band Louden Swain, Dion, Zach Page and Céleigh Chapman. The album will be released digitally on July 19, 2011. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the album below. A Little Help is directed by Michael J. Weithorn (The King of Queens) and centers on a recently widowed single mom who reconnects with an old flame – her sister’s husband. The film stars Jenna Fischer, Chris O’Donnell and Rob Benedict.
