Weekly Film Music Roundup (September 16, 2016)

Four new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller Blair Witch directed by Adam Wingard (The Guest, You’re Next) and starring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid and Wes Robinson. Wingard has also composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the movie’s score. Also opening wide is the biographical drama Snowden directed by Oliver Stone and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans and Nicolas Cage. The film’s original music is composed by Craig Armstrong (Moulin Rouge!, The Great Gatsby, The Incredible Hulk, World Trade Center) and Adam Peters (Savages) has contributed additional music. Deutsche Grammophon has released a soundtrack album featuring Armstrong’s & Peter’s music (click here for the full details), as well as a separate soundtrack featuring the orchestral score by Armstrong. ‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’ Soundtrack Announced

Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album for the psychological thriller The Stanford Prison Experiment. The album features the film’s original music composed by Andrew Hewitt (The Double, Submarine, Mojave, The Brass Teapot). The soundtrack will be released digitally on August 5, 2016 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Stanford Prison Experiment is directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez and starrs Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Michael Angarano, Tye Sheridan, Johnny Simmons, Olivia Thirlby, Keir Gilchrist and Thomas Mann. The movie tells the true story of a Stanford University professor who, in 1971, cast 24 student volunteers as prisoners and guards in a simulated jail to examine the source of abusive behavior in the prison system.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is Disney’s new film adaptation of The Jungle Book directed by Jon Favreau and starring Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyongo’o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito, Neel Sethi and Christopher Walken. The film’s original music is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Elf, Iron Man 2). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie. Click here for the full album details. Also opening wide is the action thriller Criminal directed by Ariel Vromen and starring Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Alice Eve, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot. Brian Tyler (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3, Furious 7) and Keith Power (Hawaii Five-0) have composed the film’s original music. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composers’ score, as well as the original song Drift and Fall Again performed by Madsonik featuring Lola Marsh. Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the comedy Dirty Grandpa directed by Dan Mazer and starring Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch, Julianne Hough, Jason Mantzoukas, Danny Glover, Adam Pally and Dermot Mulroney. The film’s original score is composed by Michael Andrews (Neighbors, Bridesmaids, Freaks and Geeks, Daddy’s Home). No soundtrack album has been released (a release was originally scheduled by Varese Sarabande). Dirty Grandpa follows an uptight groom who, days before his wedding, is tricked into driving his vulgar former Army general to Florida for spring break. The comedy is being released by Lionsgate. ‘Bill’ Soundtrack Details

Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album for the British comedy Bill. The album features the film’s original music composed by Andrew Hewitt (The Double, The Stanford Prison Experiment, Submarine). The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 18, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Bill is directed by Richard Bracewell and stars Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. The movie tells the story of what really happened during Shakespeare’s ‘Lost Years’ and how hopeless lute player Bill Shakespeare leaves his family and home to follow his dream.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the superhero movie Ant-Man directed by Peyton Reed and starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Corey Stoll, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, Judy Greer, Tip “TI” Harris, Wood Harris, Jordi Mollà and Michael Douglas. The film’s original music is composed by Christophe Beck (Frozen, Elektra, Edge of Tomorrow, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score and other music from the Marvel Studios production. Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Trainwreck directed by Judd Apatow and written by Amy Schumer who also stars in the movie alongside Bill Hader, LeBron James, Brie Larson, Tilda Swinton, John Cena and Ezra Miller. Jon Brion (Magnolia, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Punch Drunk Love, The Other Guys) who previously scored Apatow’s This Is 40 has composed the film’s original music. No word yet on a soundtrack release. Trainwreck follows a commitment-averse woman who is trying to get past her self-sabotaging ways. Andrew Hewitt has been hired to score the upcoming psychological thriller The Stanford Prison Experiment. The film is directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez (C.O.G.) and stars Billy Crudup, Ezra Miller, Olivia Thirlby, Nelsan Ellis, Ki Hong Lee, Tye Sheridan, Michael Angarano, Jack Kilmer and Nicholas Braun. The movie is based on the 1971 psychological exercise, for which randomly-chosen 19 and 20-year-old students were divided into camps of either prison guards or prisoners. Tim Talbott (Chicago Fire) has written the screenplay. Brent Emery is producing the project with Lizzie Friedman & Greg Little (Sex and Death 101), Karen Lauder (And Soon the Darkness), actor Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker) and Lauren Bratman (And While We Were Here).

Andrew Hewitt to Score William Monahan’s ‘Mojave’

Andrew Hewitt has signed on to score the upcoming thriller Mojave. The film is written and directed by William Monahan (London Boulevard, screenwriter of The Departed & Kingdom of Heaven) and stars Garrett Hedlund, Oscar Isaac, Mark Wahlberg, Louise Bourgoin, Walton Goggins and Fran Kranz. The movie follows a near-suicidal artist who escapes into the desert to take an existential crisis head-on, only to encounter a doppelganger-like antagonist in the form of a brilliant, homicidal drifter. Monahan is also producing the project with William Green (Ali G Inda House) of Atlas Independent.

‘The Sea’ Soundtrack Released

Milan Records has released a soundtrack album for the drama The Sea. The album inlcudes the film’s original music composed by Andrew Hewitt (Submarine, The Double) and featuring violin solos by Hilary Hahn (The Village). The soundtrack is now available to download overseas. Visit the British Amazon store to listen to audio clips. No word yet on a domestic release. The Sea is directed by Stephen Brown and stars Ciaran Hinds, Charlotte Rampling, Natascha McElhone, Rufus Sewell, Sinead Cusack, Matthew Dillon, Missy Keating and Padhraig Parkinson. The movie centers on a man who returns to the sea where he spent his childhood summers in search of peace following the death of his wife. The drama premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival and was released in the UK last month.

‘The Double’ Soundtrack Details

Milan Records will release a soundtrack album for Richard Ayoade’s indie comedy The Double. The album features the film’s original music composed by Andrew Hewitt who previously collaborated with the director on 2010’s Submarine. Also included are the songs from the film by Japanese artists Kyu Sakamoto and Jacky Yoshikawa & His Blue Comets, as well as Danny & The Islanders. The soundtrack will be released in the UK on April 4, 2014 and in the U.S. on May 6, 2014. To pre-order the CD, visit Amazon. The Double stars Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Noah Taylor, Yasmin Paige, Cathy Moriarty, Phyllis Somerville and James Fox. The comedy is based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novella of the same title about an insignificant man who is driven to near breakdown by the appearance of his doppelganger. The movie premiered at last year’s Toronto Film Festival and has been picked up by Magnolia Pictures for a release in select theaters and on VOD on May 9.
