john-debneyJohn Debney revealed in a new interview with Soundtrax that has recently scored the pilot for the Amazon Studios mystery drama The After. The project is created by Chris Carter and stars Sharon Lawrence, Jamie Kennedy, Aldis Hodge, Andrew Howard, Jaina Lee Ortiz, Adrian Pasdar, Arielle Kebbel and Louise Monot. The drama follows eight strangers who are thrown together by mysterious forces and must help each other survive in a violent world that defies explanation. Carter has also directed the pilot episode and is executive producing the project with Marc Rosen of Georgeville Television. The drama tells the true story of the first African American ever to be named Individual All-round Champion in artistic gymnastics at the Olympics. frozenComposer Christophe Beck and songwriters Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez were honored with an Annie Award in the Outstanding Achievement, Music in an Animated Feature Production category for the score and songs from Disney’s hit animated film Frozen. Beck accepted the award in person at the ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles. The other contenders in the category were Alan Silvestri for The Croods, Henry Jackman for Turbo, Mark Mothersbaugh for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, Heitor Pereira & Pharrell Williams for Despicable Me 2, Danny Elfman for Epic, Randy Newman for Monsters University and Dominic Lewis for Free Birds. bruce-broughtonOn Thursday, composer Bruce Broughton sent out the following email to Academy spokesperson Teni Melidonian and CEO Dawn Hudson (and cc to Academy president Cheryl Boone Issacs) regarding the disqualification of his nominated song from Alone Yet Not Alone, which has now been published as an open letter:

Dear Teni,

I just looked at the Academy release of the rescinding of the nomination and came upon this line in the penultimate paragraph: “Members were asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five nominees in the category.” This isn’t at all accurate. The album features the film’s original score composed by Danny Elfman (Batman, Spider-Man, The Nightmare Before Christmas). Mr. Peabody & Sherman is directed by Rob Minkoff and features the voices of Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Leslie Mann, Stanley Tucci, Allison Janney,  Ariel Winter, Stephen Colbert, Patrick Warburton, Mel Brooks, Lake Bell, Zach Callison and Dennis Haysbert. oscars9The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has issued a statement regarding the decision to rescind the nomination for the song Alone Yet Not Alone from the movie of the same title:

The Board of Governors’ decision to rescind the Original Song nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” music by Bruce Broughton, was made thoughtfully and after careful consideration.  The Academy takes very seriously anything that undermines the integrity of the Oscars® voting process. The Board regretfully concluded that Mr. Broughton’s actions did precisely that. Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

that-awkward-momentOpening in most theaters is the romantic comedy That Awkward Moment written and directed by Tom Gormican and starring Zac Efron, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Imogen Poots, Mackenzie Davis and Jessica Lucas.  David Torn (Lars and the Real GirlThe Wackness) has composed the film’s original score. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as the songs from the movie by artists including Crozet, Night Drive, Black Apples, Strange Talk and Lavender Diamond.
