James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, King Kong, Signs, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Fugitive, Maleficent, Michael Clayton) has confirmed during a concert appearance last night at the 2026 Krakow Film Music Festival that he has recently recorded his score for the upcoming supernatural romantic thriller Remain. The film is written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, Ashley Walters and Julie Hagerty. The movie based on Nicholas Sparks’ & Shyamalan’s 2025 novel of the same title follows an architect suffering from depression after losing his beloved sister who could see spirits and heads to Cape Cod to design a summer home for his best friend, when he falls in love with a mysterious woman.Shyamalan is also producing the project with Ashwin Rajan (Old, Knock at the Cabin) for Blinding Edge Pictures, alongside Marc Bienstock (Split, Glass) and Theresa Park (Bones and All, The Longest Ride). Howard has previously scored all of Shyamalan’s features between 1999 and 2013, including The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, The Village, The Lady in the Water, The Happening, Avatar: The Last Airbender & After Earth. Remain will be released in theaters nationwide on February 5, 2027 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
As previously reported, the composer also has Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping coming up and is also involved in scoring Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth!. He has also recently co-scored Lawrence Kasdan’s Netflix documentary Marty, Life Is Short, which just premiered earlier this week.
