Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

dirty-grandpaOpening in most theaters is the comedy Dirty Grandpa directed by Dan Mazer and starring Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Aubrey Plaza, Zoey Deutch, Julianne Hough, Jason Mantzoukas, Danny Glover, Adam Pally and Dermot Mulroney. The film’s original score is composed by Michael Andrews (Neighbors, Bridesmaids, Freaks and Geeks, Daddy’s Home). No soundtrack album has been released (a release was originally scheduled by Varese Sarabande). Dirty Grandpa follows an uptight groom who, days before his wedding, is tricked into driving his vulgar former Army general to Florida for spring break. the-boyAlso opening wide is the horror thriller The Boy directed by William Brent Bell and starring Lauren Cohan and Rupert Evans. Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Outlander, The Forest) has composed the film’s original music. ‘Straight Outta Compton’, ‘Carol’ & ‘Furious 7’ Honored at Guild of Music Supervisors Awards

guild-of-music-supervisorsLast night, the 6th Guild of Music Supervisors Awards were handed out at Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Jojo Villanueva received the honor in the Best Music Supervision in Motion Picture – Motion Picture Over 25M for his work on F. Gary Gray’s Straight Outta Compton. Randall Poster received the award in the Motion Picture Under 25M category for his music supervision on Todd Haynes’ Carol starring Cate Blanchett & Rooney Mara. In the Motion Picture Under 5M category category, Howard Paar was honored for his work on the indie drama The Diary of a Teenage Girl. For the first time an award for the best song/recording created for a film was given out. The winner in the category was See You Again from Furious 7 written by DJ Frank E, Charlie Puth, Wiz Khalifa and Andrew Cedar. The song previously received a Golden Globe nomination, but was missing from the Best Original Song category at the Academy Awards. In addition, Julie Houlihan, Micki Stern and Suzanne Coffman were the winners in the Best Music Supervision – Documentary category for their music supervision on The Wrecking Crew.

Shawn LeMone Promoted to ASCAP Senior Vice President, Membership

shawn-lemoneASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers today announced that Shawn LeMone has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Membership. He will continue to report directly to ASCAP EVP Membership, John Titta. LeMone has been heading ASCAP’s Film & TV department for more than six years, and attracted and developed such composers as Academy Award nominee Jóhann Jóhannsson (The Theory of Everything, Sicario), David Vanacore (Survivor, The Apprentice), Mark Williams (Who Wants to Be A Millionaire) and Jeff Lippencott (Master Chef, Shark Tank), among many others.

Ennio Morricone Wins Critics’ Choice Movie Award for ‘The Hateful Eight’

critics-choiceEnnio Morricone was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight at tonight’s 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Carter Burwell for Sicario, Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto for The Revenant, Johann Johannsson for Sicario and Howard Shore for Spotlight.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this holiday weekend:

ride-along-2Opening in most theaters is the action comedy Ride Along 2 directed by Tim Story and starring Ice Cube, Kevin Hart, Ken Jeong, Benjamin Bratt, Olivia Munn, Bruce McGill, Tika Sumpter and Sherri Shepherd. The film’s original music is composed by Christopher Lennertz (Agent Carter, Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief, Hop) who collaborate with such musicians as drummer Sheila E. and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval on the project. Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. 13-hoursAlso opening wide is the action drama 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of the Benghazi directed by Michael Bay and starring John Krasinski, Pablo Schreiber, Domicnic Fumusa, Max Martini, James Badge Dale, Toby Stephens, Matt Letscher and David Denman. Lorne Balfe (Terminatory Genisys, Home, Penguins of Madagascar) has composed the film’s original music. Hans Zimmer serves as the executive music producer. Chris Cornell’s ‘Til the Sun Comes Back Around’ from ’13 Hours’ Released

The track is featured during the film’s end titles. To download the song, visit iTunes and listen to the full track after the jump. Cornell has previously contributed the original film songs You Know My Name for 2006’s Casino Royale and The Keeper for Marc Forster’s Machine Gun Preacher. 13 Hours starring John Krasinski, Pablo Schreiber, Domicnic Fumusa, Max Martini and James Badge Dale is opening nationwide today by Paramount Pictures.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2015 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live on the ABC Television Network. 52nd Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Awards Nominations Announced

cinemaaudiosocietyThe Cinema Audio Society has announced the nominees for the 52nd Annual CAS Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing. For the past couple of years, scoring mixers have been recognized alongside production, re-recording, ADR and foley mixers. In the Motion Pictures – Live Action category, the scoring mixers honored include Thomas Vicari for Bridge of Spies (feat. music by Thomas Newman), Fabio Venturi for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight (music by Ennio Morricone), Conrad Hensel for Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant (scored by Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto) and Shawn Murphy for J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens (music by John Williams). Mad Max: Fury Road was also nominated, but no scoring mixer was included among the nominees.

Ennio Morricone Wins Golden Globe for ‘The Hateful Eight’

golden-globesEnnio Morricone has received his third Golden Globe Award for his score for Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. Tarantino accepted the award on Morricone’s behalf. The composer previously received the prize for his work on The Mission and The Legend of 1900. The other composers nominated in the Best Original Score category were Alexandre Desplat (The Danish Girl), Carter Burwell (Carol), Daniel Pemberton (Steve Jobs) and Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto (The Revenant).

the-forestIn addition to the nationwide expansion of The Revenant, the only movie opening wide is the supernatural thriller The Forest directed by Jason Zada, produced by David Goyer and starring Natalie Dormer, Taylor Kinney, Eoin Macken and Yukiyoshi Ozawa. The film’s original music is composed by Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, The Boy, Outlander). Sparks & Shadows Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. anesthesiaOpening in limited release is the indie drama Anesthesia written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson who also stars in the film alongside Kristen Stewart, Sam Waterston, Glenn Close, Gretchen Mol, Tim Blake Nelson, Corey Stoll and Michael K. Williams. Jeff Danna (The Good Dinosaur, Tyrant, The Boondock Saints) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. Anesthesia revolves around the intersection of characters after the violent mugging of a Columbia University professor. The drama premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is being released in select theaters and on VOD by IFC Films.
