Antonio Sanchez has won the Grammy Award for his music for Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. The other nominated composers in the category included Hans Zimmer (Interstellar), Johann Johannsson (The Theory of Everything), Justin Hurwitz (Whiplash) and Alexandre Desplat (The Imitation Game). The jazz drummer/composer accepted his award in person. In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Lonnie Lynn, Che Smith & John Stephen won the award for the song Glory from Ava DuVernay’s feature Selma. Paramount Pictures’ Randy Spendlove accepted the award on their behalf.

Michael Giacchino Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards
Michael Giacchino has been named Film Composer of the Year 2015 at the 15th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 42nd Ghent Film Festival. The composer’s output over the last year includes such titles as Inside Out, Tomorrowland, Jupiter Ascending and this year’s highest grossing film, Jurassic World. Giacchino previously received a World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of a Year category back in 2006. In the Best Original Film Score of the Year category, Antonio Sanchez was honored for his score to this year’s Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards, Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). The jazz drummer/composer also received the award in 2015’s Discovery of the Year category.
Antonio Sanchez Performs ‘Birdman’ Score Live to Picture
Last night, Antonio Sanchez performed his original score for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s comedy drama Birdman live to picture at ACE Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. The jazz drummer who made his film scoring debut on the project was presented to the stage by actor Michael Keaton, who is up for an Oscar for his lead performance in the film. Sanchez’s score is available on Milan Records and the movie, which is nominated for 9 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor/Actress, Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay, is now playing in theaters.

Antonio Sanchez was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman at tonight’s 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Alexandre Desplat for The Imitation Game, Johann Johannsson for The Theory of Everything, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for Gone Girl and Hans Zimmer for Interstellar.

Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action war drama Fury written and directed by David Ayer and starring Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, Jon Bernthal, Jason Isaacs and Scott Eastwood. The film’s original music is composed by Steven Price (Gravity, Attack the Block, The World’s End). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Gustavo Santaolalla (Brokeback Mountain, Babel, August: Osage County) has composed the film’s original score. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring selections from the composer’s music, as well as the songs from the film, including original tracks by performed by Jesse & Joy and La Santa Cecilia. ‘Birdman’ Soundtrack Details
The details of the soundtrack album for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s comedy drama Birdman have been revealed. The album features the film’s original drum music written by Antonio Sanchez. Also included are the classical pieces featured in the movie by Gustav Mahler, Maurice Ravel, Sergei Rachmaninov and John Adams. The soundtrack will be released on October 14, 2014 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out two tracks after the jump. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s ‘Birdman’ to Feature Music by Antonio Sanchez
Antonio Sanchez has composed the score for the upcoming comedy Birdman. The film is directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and stars Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Zach Galifianakis, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough and Amy Ryan. The movie follows a former actor, who once played an iconic superhero, as he mounts a Broadway play based on a Raymond Carver short story in a bid to reclaim past glory. Inarritu also co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, Nicolas Giacobone & Armando Bo (Biutiful) and is also producing the Worldview Entertainment and New Regency production with John Lesher (End of Watch, Blood Ties). Sanchez is best known as a jazz drummer who has performed with such acts as the Pat Metheny Group and has also released three solo albums over the past six years.
