Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Planes directed by Klay Hall and featuring a voice cast including Dane Cook, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Cedric the Entertainer, Val Kilmer, John Cleese, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett and Teri Hatcher. The film’s original music is composed by Mark Mancina (Tarzan, Speed Twister). Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well as original songs by Mark Holman, Chris Classic & Alana D and Jon Stevens of The Dead Daisies. Also opening in wide release is the sci-fi action film Elysium written and directed by Neil Blomkamp and starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Wagner Moura, Alice Braga, William Fichtner, Diego Luna and Carly Pope. The film’s original score is composed by Ryan Amon. Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. Already in theaters since Wednesday is the action comedy We’re the Millers directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and starring Jason Sudeikis, Jennifer Aniston, Emma Roberts, Nick Offerman, Katheryn Hahn, Will Poulter and Ed Helms. Theodore Shapiro (The Devil Wears Prada, Tropic Thunder) and Ludwig Goransson (Community, New Girl, 30 Minutes or Less) have co-scored the the film. A soundtrack album was originally set to be released on WaterTower Music according to the film’s poster and end credits, but no announcement has been made yet. We’re The Miller follows a veteran pot dealer who creates a fake family as part of his plan to move a huge shipment of weed into the U.S. from Mexico. Also playing in theaters since Wednesday is the fantasy adventure sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters directed by Thor Freudenthal and starring Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Jake Abel, Leven Rambin, Stanley Tucci, Sean Bean, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Head, Missi Pyle, Yvette Nicole Brown and Mary Birdsong. The film’s original music is composed by Andrew Lockington (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). Opening in limited release is the indie comedy In a World written and directed by Lake Bell and starring herself, alongside Fred Melamed, Demetri Martin, Michaela Watkins, Ken Marino, Rob Corddry, Nick Offerman, Alexandra Holden and Geena Davis. The film’s original score is composed by Ryan Miller (Safety Not Guaranteed, The Kings of Summer). No word on a soundtrack album. In a World follows a struggling female vocal coach who musters the courage to pursue her secret aspiration to be a voice-over star. Also opening in limited release is the drama Lovelace directed by Rob Epstein & Jeffrey Friedman and starring Amanda Seyfried, Peter Sarsgaard, Sharon Stone, Adam Brody, Chris Noth, Hank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Juno Temple, James Franco and Debi Mazar. Stephen Trask (Hedwig and the Angry Inch, In Good Company, Little Fockers) has composed the film’s original score. Lovelace follows adult film star Linda Lovelace through the production of Deep Throat, her abusive relationship with Chuck Traynor and eventual spearheading of the feminist anti-pornography movement. The film premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is being released by the Weinstein Company’s Radius label.
Also opening in select cities is the romantic comedy I Give It a Year directed by Dan Mazer and starring Rose Byrne, Anna Faris, Simon Baker, Rafe Spall, Minnie Driver and Jason Flemyng. Island Records has released a soundtrack album including the somgs featured in the film by artists including Jessie Ware, Tinie Tempah, Corinne Bailey-Rae, Snow Patrol, Zero 7, Dizzee Rascal and Lauren Pritchard overseas. Another limited release this week is the indie comedy drama Prince Avalanche written and directed by David Gordon Green and starring Paul Rudd and Emile Hirsch. The film’s original music is composed by post-rock instrumentalists Explosions in the Sky (Friday Night Lights) and David Wingo (Take Shelter, Mud) who has previously collaborated with Gordon Green on films including The Sitter, All the Real Girls and George Washington. The final limited release of the week is the psychological thriller Blood directed by Nick Murphy and starring Paul Bettany, Stephen Graham, Mark Strong, Brian Cox and Naomi Battrick. Daniel Pemberton (The Awakening, Ridley Scott’s upcoming The Counselor) has composed the film’s original score. MovieScore Media has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music.
