Hans Zimmer revealed in a recent interview on KCRW that he is currently collaborating with the Mexican music duo Rodrigo y Gabriela on his score for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Rodrigo y Gabriela are known for their fast, rhythmic acoustic guitar performances. Visit the duo’s official webpage to find out more about Rodrigo and Gabriela and listen to their work. The fourth Pirates of the Caribbean directed by Rob Marshall and starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Penelope Cruz is set to open on May 20, 2011. ‘Rango’ Soundtrack album announced
Anti Records has announced a soundtrack album for Gore Verbinski’s upcoming animated film Rango. The album includes the original score by Hans Zimmer, as well as songs by Los Lobos. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross win Critic’s Choice Award
Last night, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won the Critic’s Choice Award for their score for David Fincher’s The Social Network. The movie was also awarded the best picture, best director and best adapted screenplay prize. The score beat out the scores for Black Swan (Clint Mansell), Inception (Hans Zimmer), The King’s Speech (Alexandre Desplat) and True Grit (Carter Burwell). The ‘Best Song’ award went to A.R. Rahman, Dido Armstrong and Rollo Armstrong for the song If I Rise for Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours.

Two new movies open wide this weekend:
The comic book adaptation The Green Hornet is directed by Michel Gondry and stars Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz and Cameron Diaz. The film’s score is composed by James Newton Howard. While no soundtrack release has been announced, an album is reportedly in the works. In the movie, Britt Reid, heir to his father’s large company, teams up with his late dad’s assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team. Hans Zimmer not involved in Superman
The Hollywood Reporter had a chance to talk to composer Hans Zimmer about his involvement in the upcoming Superman adaptation directed by Zack Snyder, which was reported last week by NBC San Diego as reported here. The news spread last week after Zimmer did some interviews at the DVD/Blu-Ray release party for Incpetion, which according to the composer had been taken out of context. Zimmer says that at this point he has not talked with Superman‘s director Zack Snyder and is not involved in any way in the new adaptation of the comic book franchise. This, of course, doesn’t mean that he won’t be asked to score the movie, especially given his relationship with producer Christopher Nolan, but he refers to the assignment of scoring the movie and following the footsteps of John Williams as “a thankless task”, implying some hesitation in taking on scoring duties on the movie.
Hans Zimmer to receive star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced that Hans Zimmer will be honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 8 at 11:30 a.m. on Hollywood Boulevard. Christopher Nolan is expected to speak during the event. Zimmer’s star will be the 2,426th on the Walk of Fame, with only a few film composers (including Maurice Jarre, Alfred Newman, Randy Newman, Elmer Bernstein, Bill Conti, Henry Mancini and most recently Alan Menken) among the recipients. Hans Zimmer will be dedicating his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to his longtime friend and publicist, Ronni Chasen.

According to Thompson on Hollywood, Hans Zimmer revealed in a recent interview on Tuesday’s Inception DVD and Blu-Ray release party that he is going to score the upcoming Zack Snyder-directed adaptation of Superman. The movie will be produced by Christopher Nolan and is set for a holiday 2012 release. Zimmer also talked about his thoughts on scoring Superman to NBC San Diego.
Hans Zimmer is also set to start scoring the fourth part in the Pirates of the Caribbean series in January of next year. In Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Jack Sparrow and Barbossa embark on a quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to discover that Blackbeard and his daughter are after it too. The movie reunites producer Jerry Bruckheimer with cast members Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush and adds the new director Rob Marshall and cast members Ian McShane, Richard Griffiths, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench. The Walt Disney Pictures movie is set to open on May 20, 2011.
Lorne Balfe to join Hans Zimmer on ‘The Dilemma’
Film Music Reporter has learned that Lorne Balfe will be the co-composer of Ron Howard’s upcoming comedy The Dilemma alongside Hans Zimmer, who previously has been announced as the film’s composer. In the movie, a man discovers that his best friend’s wife is having an affair. The Dilemma stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Connelly and Queen Latifah. Ron Howard and Zimmer have worked together several times before, including Backdraft, The DaVinci Code, Angels and Demons and Frost/Nixon. Balfe and Zimmer recently co-composed the score for Megamind, which is the current #1 movie in the US. Universal Pictures has scheduled a January 14, 2011 release date for the movie.
