Expected to top the weekend box office is the sci-fi action adventure The Martian directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Pena, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Kristen Wiig, Mackenzie Davis and Donald Glover. The film’s original music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (Kingdom of Heaven, The Chronicles of Narnia). Columbia Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. The label has also released a soundtrack featuring the songs from the movie and will release a deluxe 2-CD soundtrack featuring both songs and score in November. Opening in around 350 IMAX theaters before expanding nationwide on October 9 is the drama The Walk directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ben Kingsley, Charlotte Le Bon and James Badge Dale. Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, The Avengers, Cast Away, Captain America: The First Avenger) has composed the film’s original music. ‘Freeheld’ Soundtrack Details

WaterTower Music will release a soundtrack album for the drama Freeheld. The album features the film’s original music composed by Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight, Inception, The Lion King, Gladiator, Interstellar) and The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr. The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 25, 2015 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. Freeheld is directed by Peter Sollett and stars Julianne Moore, Ellen Page, Michael Shannon and Steve Carell. The movie movie tells the story of Laurel Helster, a New Jersey police officer and her girlfriend who both battle to secure Hester’s pension benefits after she’s diagnosed with a terminal illness. The drama premiered this past week at the Toronto Film Festival and will be released on October 2 by Lionsgate.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Soundtrack Update

Columbia Records and Madison Gate Records will release the official soundtrack album for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. The soundtrack features the film’s original score composed by Hans Zimmer and the Magnificent Six. The composer has created a super band for the project that features Pharrell Williams, Johnny Marr (of The Smiths, Modest Mouse), Michael Einziger (of Incubus), Junkie XL, Andrew Kawczynski and Steve Mazzaro. Also included is the original song It’s On Again by Alicia Keys featuring Kendrick Lamar, written Williams, Keys, Zimmer & Lamar. Also featured on the album are new songs by Williams, The Neighbourhood, LIZ and Alvin Risk, as well as Phosphorescent’s Song for Zula. The soundtrack will be released on April 22, 2014. Johnny Marr, Michael Einziger & Dave Stewart Join ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ Music Team

Sony Pictures announced today that Johnny Marr, Michael Einziger and Dave Stewart have joined the music team for the superhero sequel The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Hans Zimmer and Pharrell Williams have previously been announced to score the film directed by Marc Webb and starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Dane DeHaan, Denis Leary, Colm Feore, Chris Cooper, Sally Field and Felicity Jones. Johnny Marr who is best known as a co-songwriter and founding member of The Smiths has previously collaborated with Zimmer as a guitarist on Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Einziger who is the founder/guitarist/songwriter for the band Incubus has composed additional music for Zimmer’s The Lone Ranger score and Dave Stewart has worked with the composer on Dreamworks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.

Weekly Film Music Roundup (May 13, 2011)

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

The 3D horror thriller Priest directed by Scott Charles Stewart and starring Paul Bettany, Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, Lily Collins and Christopher Plummer is opening in almost 3000 theaters. Christopher Young has composed the music for the film. A soundtrack album has been released by Madison Gate Records this past Tuesday. Check out our soundtrack announcement for more information.

Also opening nationwide is the comedy Bridesmaids directed by Paul Feig, produced by Judd Apatow and starring Kirsten Wiig, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph and Jon Hamm. The film’s score is written by Michael Andrews. A soundtrack album, featuring twelve songs from the film, as well as one score track by Andrews has been released by Relativity Music. Hans Zimmer to collaborate with ‘Rodrigo y Gabriela’ on new Pirates movie

Hans Zimmer revealed in a recent interview on KCRW that he is currently collaborating with the Mexican music duo Rodrigo y Gabriela on his score for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Rodrigo y Gabriela are known for their fast, rhythmic acoustic guitar performances. Visit the duo’s official webpage to find out more about Rodrigo and Gabriela and listen to their work. The fourth Pirates of the Caribbean directed by Rob Marshall and starring Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush and Penelope Cruz is set to open on May 20, 2011.
