Sparks & Shadows will release a soundtrack album for the new Starz original series Black Sails. The album features the show’s original score composed by Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), including the composer’s main titles theme. The soundtrack will be released digitally and physically on January 28, 2014. Black Sails marks McCreary’s second collaboration with show creator Jonathan E. Steinberg following Human Target and follows the tales of Captain Flin and his men twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island. The pirate adventure is co-created by Robert Levine and stars Toby Stephens, Luke Arnold, Zach McGowan, Toby Schmitz, Hannah New, Tom Hopper, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Clara Paget and Mark Ryan. The series will premiere this Saturday, January 25 and will air every Saturday night on Starz.

Bear McCreary to Score Starz’s ‘Outlander’
Bear McCreary has announced on Twitter that he will be scoring the upcoming Starz original series Outlander. The show is created by Ronald D. Moore based on Diana Gabaldon’s best-selling books and stars Caitrona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Gary Lewis, Duncan Lacroix, Annette Badland and Stephen Walters. The series follows the story of Claire Randall, a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. Moore is also executive producing the Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television production with Jim Kohlberg (The Music Never Stopped).

Premiering on Tuesday, September 24, on ABC is Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. executive produced by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen and starring Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Chloe Bennett. Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica) is scoring the show weekly with a full orchestra. Mychael Danna, Bear McCreary and John Lunn Win Emmy Awards
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards were handed out this afternoon at the NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE in Downtown Los Angeles. John Lunn has received his second Emmy for his music for Downtown Abbey in the Outstandig Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) category after last year’s win. Mychael Danna won his first Emmy Award for the mini-series World Without End in the Outstandig Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Original Dramatic Score) category. Bear McCreary received his first Emmy Award for his main titles theme for Da Vinci’s Demons. In the Original Music and Lyrics category, Adam Schlesinger (music) and David Javerbaum (lyrics) were honored with an Emmy for the song If I Had Time written for the 66th Annual Tony Awards ceremony.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action comedy 2 Guns directed by Baltasar Kormákur and starring Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, Fred Ward, James Marsden and Edward James Olmos. The film’s original score is composed by Clinton Shorter (District 9, Contraband). Already in theaters since Wednesday is the hybrid live action/animated family movie The Smurfs 2 directed by Raja Gosnell and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria and Brendan Gleeson. RCA Records has released a soundtrack album featuring songs from and inspired by the film, including Britney Spears’ new single Ooh La La, as well as songs by Owl City, Nelly Furtado (feat. ‘Caprica’ Soundtrack Details
La-La Land Records will release a soundtrack album for the Syfy original series Caprica. The album features selections from the show’s original score composed by Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galactica, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). Also included are two songs from the series performed by Young Beautiful in a Hurry. The soundtrack will be released as a 2CD-set on July 30, 2013. Caprica is set 58 years before Battlestar Galactica and follows two rival families as they grow, compete, and thrive in the vibrant world of the peaceful 12 Colonies, living in a society close to our own. The sci-fi drama is created by Remi Aubuchon & Ronald D. Moore and stars Eric Stoltz, Esai Morales, Paula Malcomson, Alessandra Torresani, Magda Apanowicz, Sasha Roiz, Brian Markinson and Polly Walker.
‘Europa Report’ Soundtrack Details
Sparks & Shadows Records will release a soundtrack album for the sci-fi thriller Europa Report. The album features the film’s original score composed by Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead, Battlestar Galacticia). The soundtrack will be released digitally on August 2, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. A physical version is also in the works. Check out audio clips from the score after the jump. Europa Report is directed by Sebastián Cordero and stars Sharlto Copley (District 9), Michael Nyqvist, Daniel Wu, Anamaria Marinca, Christian Camargo and Karolina Wydra. The movie follows a contemporary mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa to investigate the possible existence of alien life within our solar system. The sci-fi thriller will be released in select theaters on August 2, 2013 by Magnolia Pictures’ Magnet Releasing label and is now available on VOD.
Comic-Con 2013 Update
Since our last update on this year’s film music-related events at Comic-Con in San Diego, a couple of additional announcements have been made. Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead) has joined the panel The Anatomy of Superhero Film Music: Bringing a Comic Book to Life, which also features such participants as Marco Beltrami and Brian Tyler. It was just announced that the composer will be scoring Marvel’s upcoming superhero TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. earlier this week. As previously reported, McCreary will also participate in The Character of Music panel with Jonathan Steinberg from the upcoming Black Sails series. In addition, there will also be a live performance of the original Black Sails score with McCreary playing accordion and hurdy gurdy at a screening event on July 18 at 8:30 p.m. at Reading Cinemas (701 5th Ave). Finally, the composer will also participate in a panel for the sci-fi feature Europa Report with director Sebastián Cordero, producer Ben Browning, actress Karolina Wydra and JPL scientists Steve Vance and Kevin Hand.

Bear McCreary has been tapped to score Marvel’s highly anticipated TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. The show from executive producers Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog) marks Marvel’s first television series. Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost) also serve as executive producers of the ABC Studios and Marvel Television production. The show stars Clark Gregg who reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films and follows him as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Chloe Bennett are co-starring. Whedon also directed the pilot episode. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is set to premiere this fall and will air every Tuesday night on ABC.
