Lakeshore Records has announced a second soundtrack album for the indie coming-of-age drama The Spectacular Now. The album features the songs featured in the film by artists including Faron Young, Kutt the Check, Snake! Snake! Snakes!, Washed Out, Tennessee River Crooks, Just Water, Saturday Looks Good To Me and Norma Jenkins. The soundtrack will be released digitally on August 20, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips can be checked out after the jump. The label has previously released a soundtrack featuring the composer Rob Simonsen’s score for the film (click here for the details, including audio clips). The Spectacular Now is directed by James Ponsoldt and stars Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Kyle Chandler. The drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and is now playing in limited release before expanding to additional markets within the next couple of weeks.

Two new movies are opening nationwide this week:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the action comedy 2 Guns directed by Baltasar Kormákur and starring Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, Paula Patton, Bill Paxton, Fred Ward, James Marsden and Edward James Olmos. The film’s original score is composed by Clinton Shorter (District 9, Contraband). Already in theaters since Wednesday is the hybrid live action/animated family movie The Smurfs 2 directed by Raja Gosnell and starring Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, Hank Azaria and Brendan Gleeson. RCA Records has released a soundtrack album featuring songs from and inspired by the film, including Britney Spears’ new single Ooh La La, as well as songs by Owl City, Nelly Furtado (feat. The film written by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber follows a high school senior and the mercurial introvert he attempts to “save” from life as a social outcast. The comedy drama premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and was acquired by A24 Films for a theatrical release on August 2.
Rob Simonsen to Score ‘The Spectacular Now’
Rob Simonsen has been tapped to score the comedy drama The Spectacular Now. The film is directed by James Ponsoldt (Smashed) and stars Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Bob Odenkirk and Andre Royo. The movie follows a high school senior and the mercurial introvert he attempts to “save” from life as a social outcast. The dramedy is based on a novel by Tim Tharp and has been adapted for the screen by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (500 Days of Summer, which Simonsen co-scored). Tom McNulty (Date Night) & Shawn Levy (A Night at the Museum), Michelle Krumm and Andrew Lauren are producing the 21 Laps, Global Produce and ALP production.
