Johann Johannsson has been named Film Composer of the Year at the 17th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 44th Ghent Film Festival for his score for Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival. He was previously nominated in the category in 2015. Nicholas Britell received his first World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of the Year category for his Academy Award-nominated score from Moonlight. Rupert Gregson-Williams was honored as TV Composer of the year for his work on the Netflix original series The Crown.

Weekly Film Music Roundup (September 1, 2017)
Two movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the 40th anniversary re-release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon and Francois Truffaut. The film’s original music is composed by John Williams (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Jaws). While Arista’s 1998 Collector’s Edition soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score is still available digitally, a new limited soundtrack CD for the movie was announced this week and will be released by La-La Land Records. No word yet on a release date.
Also opening wide is the period drama Tulip Fever directed by Justin Chadwick and starring Alicia Vikander, Dan DeHaan, Christoph Waltz, Holliday Grainger, Jack O’Connell, Zach Galifianakis, Dame Judi Dench, Matthew Morrison, Tom Hollander and Cara Delevingne. Danny Elfman (Batman, Spider-Man, Alice in Wonderland, A Nightmare Before Christmas) has composed the film’s original music. A.R. Rahman Scoring Netflix’s ‘Daughters of Destiny’
Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Couples Retreat, The Hundred Foot Journey) has composed the music for the new Netflix docu-series Daughters of Destiny. The show is directed by Vanessa Roth who received an Academy Award for her documentary short Freeheld in 2008 and follows five girls from India’s most impoverished families attend a boarding school designed to create opportunities as they strive for a brighter future. Roth is also executive producing the 4-parter.
A.R. Rahman to Score ‘Sangamithra’
According to The Hollywood Reporter, A.R. Rahman is set to compose the music for the upcoming Indian epic drama Sangamithra. The film will be directed by Sundar C. (Aranmanai, Anbe Sivam) and is set to star Jayam Ravi, Arya and Shruti Haasan. The movie is set in the 8th century AD and tells the story of the trials and tribulations of Sangamithra and her journey to save her kingdom. The drama produced by Thenandal Studios Limited will be split and released in two parts. Sangamithra is currently in pre-production and will begin principal photography this summer.
‘Viceroy’s House’ Soundtrack Details
Filmtrax will release a soundtrack album for the historical drama Viceroy’s House. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Couples Retreat, The Hundred-Foot Journey). The soundtrack will be released digitally on March 3, 2017 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. Viceroy’s House is directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) and stars Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, Om Puri, Michael Gambon, Simon Callow and Lily Travers.
‘Pelé: Birth of a Legend’ Soundtrack Details
Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the biographical drama Pelé: Birth of a Legend. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Couples Retreat, A Hundred-Foot Journey, Million Dollar Arm). The soundtrack will be released on June 24, 2016 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Pele: Birth of a Legend is written and directed by Jeff and Michael Zimbalist and stars Kevin de Paula, Vincent D’Onofrio, Rodrigo Santoro, Diego Boneta and Colm Meaney. The movie chronicles football star Pelé’s challenging childhood in the slums of São Paulo state, his rapid rise to prominence with the Brazil soccer squad and culminating in his team’s victory at the 1958 World Cup.

A.R. Rahman is composing the music for the upcoming period drama Viceroy’s House. The film is directed by Gurinder Chadha (Bend It Like Beckham) and stars Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Simon Callow, Lily Travers, Michael Gambon, Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, Om Puri, Tanveer Ghani, Denzil Smith and Neeraj Kabi. The movie chronicles the life inside Viceroy’s House, the sumptuous Delhi home of the British rulers of India, and the momentous political decisions that led to the Partition of India in 1947. Chadha has also co-written the screenplay with Paul Mayeda Berges and Moira Buffini (Jane Eyre, Tamara Drewe).

Opening in most theaters is the dramatic thriller Money Monster directed by Jodie Foster and starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Jack O’Connell, Dominic West, Giancarlo Esposito and Caitriona Balfe. The film’s original score is composed by Dominic Lewis (The Man in the High Castle, Free Birds) and produced by Henry Jackman. Also opening wide is the horror thriller The Darkness directed by Greg McLean and starring Kevin Bacon, Radha Mitchell, David Mazouz, Lucy Fry, Matt Walsh and Jennifer Morrison. Johnny Klimek (One Hour Photo, Sense8, Cloud Atlas, The International) has composed the film’s original music. No soundtrack album has been announced. The Darkness (previously entitled 6 Miranda Drive) follows two families who return from a summer camping trip in the Grand Canyon with a supernatural presence in tow. ‘Muhammad: The Messenger of God’ Soundtrack Details
Sony Music India will release a soundtrack album for the Iranian epic drama Muhammad: The Messenger of God. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award winner A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, Couples Retreat, The Hundred-Foot Journey). The soundtrack will be released tomorrow, December 23 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also check out audio samples. Muhammad: The Messenger of God is directed by Majid Majidi and stars Mahdi Pakdel, Alireza Shoja Nouri, Mohsen Tanabandeh, Dariush Farhang, Seyed Sadegh Hatefi, Sareh Bayat and Mina Sadati. The movie is set in the sixth century and revolves around the childhood of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The drama, which marks Iran’s biggest film production to date and was submitted as the Iranian candidate for this year’s Academy Awards, was released in Iran and other markets earlier this year.

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action adventure Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles directed by Jonathan Liebesman and starring Megan Fox, Will Arnett, William Fichtner, as well as the voices of Alan Ritchson, Noel Fisher, Jeremy Howard and Pete Ploszek. The film’s original music is composed by Brian Tyler (Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Fast Five). Atlantic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week.
