Burt Bacharach has passed away yesterday at age 94. The Grammy Award-winning songwriter/composer and pianist has written hundreds of songs throughout his career, including numerous tracks written specifically for films and also composed several film scores. He won his first two Academy Awards for the song Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head (with Hal David) and the score from George Roy Hill’s western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1970 and received another Oscar a decade later for Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) from Steve Gordon’s Arthur.

Two movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the 40th anniversary re-release of Close Encounters of the Third Kind directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Richard Dreyfuss, Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon and Francois Truffaut. The film’s original music is composed by John Williams (Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jurassic Park, Jaws). While Arista’s 1998 Collector’s Edition soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score is still available digitally, a new limited soundtrack CD for the movie was announced this week and will be released by La-La Land Records. No word yet on a release date.
Also opening wide is the period drama Tulip Fever directed by Justin Chadwick and starring Alicia Vikander, Dan DeHaan, Christoph Waltz, Holliday Grainger, Jack O’Connell, Zach Galifianakis, Dame Judi Dench, Matthew Morrison, Tom Hollander and Cara Delevingne. Danny Elfman (Batman, Spider-Man, Alice in Wonderland, A Nightmare Before Christmas) has composed the film’s original music. Burt Bacharach’s ‘Po’ Soundtrack to Be Released
Varese Sarabande has announced the official soundtrack album for the drama Po. The album features the film’s original score composed by Academy Award and Grammy Award winner Burt Bacharach, as well as the original song Dancing With Your Shadow, composed by Bacharach and featuring lyrics by Billy Mann, and performed by Sheryl Crow. Listen to the song after the jump. Also included is additional music by Joseph Bauer. The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, January 13 and will be available to download on Amazon. Burt Bacharach to Score John Asher’s ‘Po’
Burt Bacharach has signed on to score the upcoming drama Po. The film is directed by John Asher (Dirty Love) and stars Christopher Gorham, Julian Feder and Kaitlin Doubleday. The movie tells the story of a recently widowed father struggling to raise his 10-year-old son who has autism. Colin Goldman has written the screenplay based on a story by himself and Steve C. Roberts. Asher is also producing the project with Rod Hamilton. Bacharach, whose own daughter Nikki struggled with Asperger’s Syndrome (high-functioning autism), agreed to let Asher use his song Close to You in the film and later, after watching the film, offered to score the film.
