Alexandre Desplat has been hired to score the upcoming Dreamworks Animation feature Rise of the Guardians. The movie is based on the book series The Guardians of Childhood by William Joyce (Meet the Robinsons) who is also co-directing the film with Peter Ramsey. The movie follows a group of heroic childhood legends, including Santa Claus (voiced by Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and Jack Frost (Chris Pine) who teaming up to stop Pitch the Boogeyman (Jude Law) from sending the world into eternal darkness. Joyce has also co-written the film’s script with David Lindsay-Abaire (Robots, Rabbit Hole). Christina Steinberg (Bee Movie) and Nancy Bernstein are producing the project and Guillermo del Toro and Michael Siegel (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) serve as executive producers. Jon Brion has signed on to score the upcoming comedy This is 40. The movie is written and directed by Judd Apatow and stars Jason Segel, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann who are reprising their roles from the 2007 hit comedy Knocked Up. Megan Fox, Melissa McCarthy and Albert Brooks are co-starring. Apatow is also producing the project with Barry Mendel (The Sixth Sense, Bridesmaids) and Clayton Townsend (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up). Brion has previously scored the Apatow-produced comedy Step Brothers in 2008. This is 40 marks the composer’s first collaboration with Apatow as a director. Several major upcoming scoring assignments have been revealed or confirmed by the site, among them Danny Elfman‘s involvement in Blue Sky Studios’ upcoming animated feature film Leafmen. The movie directed by Chris Wedge is based on the book The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs by William Joyce about a troop of bugs that try to save a garden and have to battle an evil spider queen. The project is produced by James V. Hart (screenwriter of Hook, Contact and August Rush) and William Joyce (Robots). Four new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action thriller Safe House directed by Daniel Espinosa and starring Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Vera Farmiga, Liam Cunningham, Brendan Gleeson, Robert Patrick and Sam Shepard. The film’s score is written by Ramin Djawadi. Varese Sarabande Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Also opening wide this week is the romantic drama The Vow directed by Michael Sucsy and starring Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Sam Neill, Scott Speedman, Wendy Crewson and Jessica Lange. Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack release for the upcoming dramedy Being Flynn. The album features the original music from the film written by Badly Drawn Boy. The soundtrack will be released digitally on February 28, 2012. The CD version is set to come out on March 27 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. Being Flynn marks Badly Drawn Boy’s (aka Damon Gough) second major film music project following his bestselling soundtrack for the Hugh Grant-starring comedy drama About a Boy in 2002. The movie is directed by Paul Weitz (In Good Company) and stars  Robert De Niro, Paul Dano, Julianne Moore and Olivia Thirlby. The film about a young writer who takes a job at a homeless shelter in Boston where one night he discovers his long-absent father seeking a bed will be released in select theaters on March 2. Sony Music is set to re-release the best-selling soundtrack for James Cameron’s Titanic to coincide with the 3D release of the film. The album includes the original music by James Horner who received his first two Academy Awards for his work on the film, including both the score and the Celine Dion-performed song My Heart Will Go On. The reissue will be released on March 27, 2012 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. In addition, the label is also releasing a 4-disc collector’s edition, which includes the newly-remastered version of the original soundtrack, the album Back to Titanic, as well as a previously unreleased disc of period music recorded for the movie by I Salonisti – the five-piece quintet that appears in the film and a new compilation of songs from the early 1900s entitled Popular Music From The Titanic Era. Atlantic Records will be releasing the official soundtrack album for the highly anticipated film adaptation of The Hunger Games. A soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film is set for a release on March 20, 2012. The album is now available for pre-order on Amazon. T Bone Burnett is producing the soundtrack. It has already been reported that Taylor Swift’s song Safe & Sound will be included on the album. The full track list will be published within the next few weeks. No word yet on a separate album featuring composer James Newton Howard’s original score. Orbital to Score ‘Pusher’ Remake

NME.com is reporting that the British electronic dance music duo Orbital is scoring the upcoming crime thriller Pusher. The movie is an English-language remake of the Danish 1996 film directed by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) who is involved as an executive producer in the new version directed by Luis Prieto. Pusher stars Richard Coyle (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time), Agyness Dean, Bronson Webb and Paul Kaye. Rupert Preston (Monsters, Bronson), Chris Simon and Felix Vossen are producing the Embargo Films and Vertigo Films production. Orbital (aka Paul and Phil Hartnoll) have previously been involved in a number of films, most notably in the 1997 sci-fi horror film Event Horizon, on which they collaborated with composer Michael Kamen. No release date has been announced yet for Pusher.

The soundtrack will be released digitally on February 21, 2012 and physically on March 20. The CD version is now available for pre-order on Amazon.
