Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is Pixar’s 13th full length animated feature Brave directed by Mark Andrews and featuring the voice talent of Kelly MacDonald, Emma Thompson, Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane and Billy Connolly. The film’s score is composed by Patrick Doyle. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack featuring the composer’s score, as well as songs from Scottish Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis and a collaboration between folk rock band Mumford and Sons who penned Learn Me Right sung by Birdy. Also opening wide is the supernatural action film Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter directed by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and starring Benjamin Walker, Anthony Mackie, Dominic Cooper, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jimmi Simpson, Rufus Sewell and Alan Tudyk. Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class) has composed the film’s original score. Sony Masterworks has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score. Deborah Lurie has written the underscore for the upcoming documentary Katy Perry: Part of Me. The 3D concert film is directed by Dan Cutforth and Jane Lipsitz and takes a look at the international superstar’s life both on- and off-stage. The movie documents Perry’s California Dreams Tour (consisting of 124 performances), which started over a year ago. Brian Grazer (A Beautiful Mind, Apollo 13) is producing the documentary for Imagine Entertainment, alongside Perry herself, as well as Martin Kirkup, Bradford Cobb and Steven Jensen of Direct Management. Craig Brewer who has collaborated with Lurie on last year’s Footloose is among the executive producers of the project. Lurie has previously scored last year’s hit documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, which was produced by Cutforth and Lipsitz. Jim Dooley will be scoring the new CW drama Emily Owens, M.D..  The show stars Mamie Gummer (daughter of Meryl Streep) in the title role, alongside Justin Hartley, Michael Rady, Aja Naomi King, Kelly McCreary and Necar Zadegan. The series, which was previously entitled First Cut, follows a newly minted doctor who, glad to leave her past behind for a fresh start in the adult professional world, discovers that life at the hospital where she works is no different than high school. Jennie Snyder Urman (90210, Something Borrowed), Dan Jinks (American Beauty, Milk) and Bharat Nalluri (Tsunami) are executive producing the CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Erran Baron Cohen has scored the Lifetime TV movie Talhotblond. The drama marks the longform directorial debut of Courteney Cox and follows the life of Thomas Montgomery, a married father of two young daughters who gets seduced by the world of online gambling and chat rooms where a virtual romance and sexual obsession ultimately leads to the murder of an innocent man. Garret Dillahunt, Laura San Giacomo and Ashley Hinshaw are starring in the TV production. The film is executive produced by Brad Krevoy (HBO’s Taking Chance, Dumb & Dumber) Alexandre Coscas and Francisco Gonzalez. Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack album for Asif Kapadia’s documentary The Odyssey. The album features the film’s original score composed by Antonio Pinto (City of God, Lord of War) and Dudu Aram. The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 3, 2012 and is now available on Amazon. Audio clips are available below. The Odyssey canvases the opinions of Londoners from the point where the Olympics were first won by London up to the point when it happens. Pinto has previously scored the director’s critically acclaimed documentary Senna. Los Angeles Philharmonic musical director Gustavo Dudamel has been tapped to score the Spanish, French and English-language biopic Libertador. The film is directed by Alberto Arvelo (Cyrano Fernandez) and stars Edgar Ramírez as Venezuelan military and political leader Simón Bolívar who was instrumental in Latin America’s struggle for independence from the Spanish Empire. Danny Huston, María Valverde, Imanol Arias and Gary Lewis are co-starring. The movie traces Bolívar’s quests, military campaigns and vision to wrestle independence from Spain and unify South America. Timothy J. Sexton (Children of Men) has written the screenplay for the Spanish-Venezuelan co-production and Winfried Hammacher and Ana Loehnert are producing. Read the rest of this entry »

Hans Zimmer has signed on to score Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel. The film stars Henry Cavill in the title role, alongside Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Russell Crowe as Jor-El, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. Christopher Meloni, Laurence Fishburne and Michael Shannon are also starring. David Goyer (Batman Begins, Blade) has written the screenplay. Christopher Nolan who has worked with Zimmer on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, Inception and the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises is producing the DC Entertainment production with Emma Thomas, Charles Roven (Three Kings, Twelve Monkeys) and Deborah Snyder (Watchmen). Snyder has previously collaborated with composer Tyler Bates on his previous features, including Watchmen, Sucker Punch, Dawn of the Dead and 300. Read the rest of this entry »

Cutting Edge Group’s Pale Blue Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the horror film Chernobyl Diaries. The album features the movie’s original score composed by Diego Stocco. The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 8, 2012 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. Check out audio clips from the score after the jump. Chernobyl Diaries based on a story by Oren Peli (Paranormal Activity), directed by Bradley Parker and starring Jesse McCartney, Jonathan Sadowski, Devin Kelley, Olivia Taylor Dudley, Nathan Phillips, Ingrid Bolso Berdal and Dimitri Diatchenko follows six tourists who take an extreme tour of Pripyat, the abandoned city near the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Rolfe Kent revealed at a composer panel at this year’s Los Angeles Film Festival that he has already started work on Jason Reitman’s coming-of-age drama Labor Day. The film stars Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Gattlin Griffiths, Lucas Hedges, Alexie Gilmore and Micah Fowler. The movie based on the novel by Joyce Maynard (To Die For) and adapted for the screen by Reitman follows a 13-year old boy who must care for his reclusive mother while dealing with the typical troubles of adolescence. Reitman is producing the Indian Paintbrush production with Helen Estabrook, Liane Halfon & Russell Smith (Juno, Ghost World). Read the rest of this entry »

Lakeshore Records has announced a soundtrack release for the documentary The Queen of Versailles. The album features the film’s original score composed by Jeff Beal (Appaloosa, Rome). The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 3, 2012 and will be available to download on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the release after the jump. The Queen of Versailles directed by Lauren Greenfield (Thin) follows a billionaire couple who live in a 90,000-square-foot mansion inspired by Versailles, built on the success of the time-share industry.
