Justin Hurwitz was honored with his the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land at tonight’s 22nd Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Santa Monica, CA. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Nicholas Britell for Moonlight, Johann Johannsson for Arrival, Mica Levi for Jackie and Dustin O’Halloran & Hauschka for Lion. Premiering tonight in the U.S. is the new season of the BBC series The Hollow Crown, which adapts Shakespeare’s history plays set during the time of the Wars of the Roses: Henry VI Part 1, Henry VI Part II and Richard III. Dan Jones (Shadow of the Vampire, Lady Macbeth, Max) has composed the season’s original music. He follows composers Stephen Warbeck, Adam Cork and Adrian Johnston who scored the previous Hollow Crown installments. The 3-parter starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Sturridge, Sophie Okonedo, Keeley Hawes, Hugh Bonneville, Judi Dench & Michael Gambon will premiere in the U.S. on PBS as part of the Great Performances series. Premiering on Wednesday, December 14, is the new Fox drama Star created by Lee Daniels & Tom Donaghy and starring Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt, Jude Demorest, Brittany O’Grady and Ryan Destiny. The show’s original score is composed by James S. Levine (Glee, Nip/Tuck, Damages, American Horror Story, Bloodline). Republic Records has released an EP featuring the songs from the premiere episode this past Friday. Gaumont will release a soundtrack album for the animated feature Ballerina. The album features the film’s original score composed by Klaus Badelt (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Time Machine, The Recruit, The Promise), as well as the original songs from the movie by Christopher Braide. Also included is Demi Lovato’s Confident. The soundtrack will be released overseas on December 12, 2016. (UPDATE, August, 2017: The album is now available in the U.S. under the title Leap! and can be downloaded on Amazon). Ballerina is directed by Eric Summer & Eric Warin and features the voice talent of Elle Fanning, Maddie Ziegler and Carly Rae Jepsen. The movie is set in 1879 Paris and follows an orphan girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina and moves to Paris, where she passes for someone else and accedes to the position of pupil at the Grand Opera house. John Swihart is composing the music for the upcoming NBC comedy Trial & Error. The show is created by Jeff Astrof (Ground Floor), Matt Miller (Forever, Chuck, Lethal Weapon) and stars John Lithgow, Nick D’Agosto, Steven Boyer, Sherri Shepherd, Jayma Mays and Krysta Rodriguez. The series follows a bright-eyed New York lawyer who heads to a small Southern town to defend an eccentric accused of murder. Astrof and Miller also serve as executive producers on the Warner Bros. The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is the comedy Office Christmas Party directed by Josh Gordon & Will Speck and starring Jason Bateman, Jennifer Aniston, Olivia Munn, Kate McKinnon, Courtney B. Vance, T.J. Miller, Vanessa Bayer, Jillian Bell, Jamie Chung, Rob Corddry, Abbey Lee, Karan Soni and Matt Walsh. The film’s original score is composed by Theodore Shapiro (Ghostbusters, Tropic Thunder, The Devil Wears Prada). Opening semi-wide in around 600 theaters is the comedy The Bounce Back directed by Youssef Delara and starring Shemar Moore, Nadine Velazquez, Bill Bellamy, Sheryl Underwood and Kali Hawk. Reza Safinia (Filly Brown, The Trust, Birth of the Dragon) has composed the film’s original score. No word on a soundtrack release. The movie follows a relationship guru and best-selling author who finds himself falling for the licensed therapist who questions his methods. The comedy is being released by Viva Pictures. Dave Porter has been tapped to score the upcoming NBC drama The Blacklist: Redemption. The show is created by Jon Bokenkamp (Taking Lives) & John Eisendrath (Joy), Lukas Reiter and J.R. Orci and stars Ryan Eggold, Famke Janssen, Edi Gathegi, Tawny Cypress and Adrian Martinez. The series is a spin-off of the network’s The Blacklist, which Porter is also scoring, and revolves around the world’s most elusive criminals from Red’s infamous list who come together to form an elite mercenary team as they try to regain their self-worth after a lifetime of inflicting damage on the world. Alan Menken revealed in a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter that he is writing two original songs for the upcoming comedy Holmes & Watson. Glenn Slater is proving the lyrics. The movie is written and directed by Etan Cohen (Get Hard) and stars Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Rebecca Hall, Kelly Macdonald, Lauren Lapkus and Rob Brydon. The film is described as a comedic take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic mysteries featuring Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson. Jimmy Miller (Step Brothers, Bad Teacher, The Other Guys) is producing the project for Mosaic, alongside Adam McKay (The Big Short, Anchorman, Tallageda Nights) for Gary Sanchez Productions. A soundtrack album for Benoit Jacquot’s drama Never Ever (À jamais) will be released. The album features the film’s original music composed by Academy Award nominee Bruno Coulais (Coraline, The Chorus, The Crimson Rivers, Song of the Sea) who previously collaborated with the director on such movies as Farewell, My Queen, Diary of a Chambermaid and 3 Hearts. The soundtrack will be released digitally on December 23, 2016 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples.
