The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra and stars Emma Thompson, Mindy Kaling, John Lithgow, Hugh Dancy, Amy Ryan, Reid Scott, Paul Walter Hauser, Denis O’Hare, John Early, Max Casella and Megalyn Echikunwoke. The movie centers on a late-night talk show host who is at risk of losing her long-running show right when she hires her first female writer who revitalizes her show and her life. Kaling (The Mindy Project, The Office) also wrote the screenplay and is producing the Imperative Entertainment and FilmNation Entertainment production with Howard Klein (Jessica Jones).
