The team behind the sound mixing of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman has won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing in the Motion Pictures – Live Action category at last night’s 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards ceremony at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. Scoring mixer Gustavo Borner, along with production mixer Thomas Varga, re-recording mixers Jon Taylor & Frank A. Montaño, ADR mixer Jason Oliver and foley mixer John Sanacore received the award for the comedy drama starring Michael Keaton and scored by Antonio Sanchez. The other contenders in the category were American Sniper, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar and Unbroken. In the the Motion Pictures – Animated category, scoring mixer Alan Meyerson received the award as part of the sound mixing team of Disney’s Big Hero 6 (scored by Henry Jackman).

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the film adaptation of E.L. James’ bestselling novel Fifty Shades of Grey directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and starring Jamie Dornan, Dakota Johnson, Jennifer Ehle, Marcia Gay Harden, Luke Grimes, Max Martini, Dylan Neal, Eloise Mumford, Rita Ora and Victor Rasuk. Republic Records has released a soundtrack album featuring songs from and inspired by the film by such artists as Annie Lennox, Beyoncé, The Weeknd, Ellie Goulding, AWOLNATION, Sia & more. Also opening wide is the spy action comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong and Jack Davenport. The film’s original music is composed by Henry Jackman (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Big Hero 6, X-Men: First Class, Wreck-It-Ralph) and Matthew Margeson (Kick-Ass 2, Skyline). Hollywood Bowl 2015 Season Schedule Announced
The Hollywood Bowl has announced this summer’s season schedule, which includes a number of film music concerts. On September 4/5/6, 2015, the Bowl will host its premiere performance of E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial in Concert. The Los Angeles Philharmonic will be performing the film’s entire Academy Award-winning score from Steven Spielberg’s classic film composed by John Williams (Star Wars, Jaws, Jurassic Park) live-to-picture while the movie is shown in HD on the Bowl’s big screen. On Tuesday, June 30, the Bowl will also host the U.S. premiere of Back to the Future in Concet to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original movie.
Elliot Goldenthal to Receive ASCAP Founders Award
The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has announced that composer Elliot Goldenthal will receive the organization’s Founder Award at the 30th annual Film & Television Music Awards, which will take place on Monday, March 9, 2015 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA. The invitation-only dinner and awards ceremony will honor the composers and songwriters of the top box office film music, the most performed television music and the top video game music of 2014. The Founder Award is given to songwriters and composers who have made pioneering contributions to music by inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators. Previous recipients include Quincy Jones, Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Elmer Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Burt Bacharach and Hal David.
Alexandre Desplat Wins Grammy Award for ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’
Alexandre Desplat has won the Grammy Award for his music for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. He previously won a Grammy for his score for Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech. The other nominated composers in the category included Christophe Beck (Frozen), Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross (Gone Girl), Steven Price (Gravity) and Thomas Newman (Saving Mr. Banks). In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won the award for the song Frozen from Disney’s hit feature Frozen. In the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Visual Media category, the soundtrack album for Frozen, which features the film’s songs and the score composed by Christophe Beck, released by Walt Disney Records was honored with a Grammy award.
Alexandre Desplat Wins BAFTA Award for ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’
Alexandre Desplat has received his second BAFTA Award for his score for Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel in the Original Music category. The composer accepted the award in person at the British Academy Film Awards ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London. Desplat previously won the BAFTA Award in 2011 for The King’s Speech and was nominated five more times. He was nominated alongside Antonio Sanchez (Birdman), Hans Zimmer (Interstellar), Johann Johannsson (The Theory of Everything) and Mica Levi (Under the Skin). The composer is also up for an Academy Award for the score and is also nominated for his music for The Imitation Game.
Tegan and Sara & The Lonely Island to Perform ‘Everything Is Awesome’ at the Oscars
Academy Awards show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today that pop duo Tegan and Sara and comedy-music trio The Lonely Island will perform the Oscar-nominated song Everything Is Awesome from the animated feature The Lego Movie at the 87th Oscars ceremony, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, on Sunday, February 22. The song written by Shawn Patterson is one of the five nominees in the Best Original Song category, alongside Glory from Selma, Grateful from Beyond the Lights, I’m Not Gonna Miss You from Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me and Lost Stars from Begin Again. The track has sold more than half a million copies in the U.S.

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the animated feature The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water directed by Paul Tibbitt and featuring the voices of Antonio Banderas, Tom Kenny, Clancy Brown, Rodger Bumpass, Bill Fagerbakke, Carolyn Lawrence and Douglas Lawrence. Columbia Records has released a soundtrack featuring five songs from the film. Visit Amazon to download the release. The movie’s original score is composed by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf, Bruce Almighty). No word yet on a release of the composer’s music. Also opening wide is the sci-fi adventure Jupiter Ascending written and directed by Andy & Lana Wachowski and starring Channing Tatum, Mila Kunis, Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne and Douglas Booth. Michael Giacchino (Lost, Star Trek, Up, Ratatouille, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) has composed the film’s original score. ‘The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ Soundtrack Preview
Audio clips from the soundtrack for comedy drama sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel have been published online. The album features the film’s original music composed by Thomas Newman (The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Finding Nemo, Wall-E, Skyfall) who previously scored John Madden’s original movie. The soundtrack will be released will be released on March 3, 2015 by Sony Classical and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Dev Patel, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Diana Hardcastle, David Strathairn and Richard Gere follows Patel’s character planning to expand the Best Exotic Hotel for the Elderly and the Beautiful while getting married.
John Powell & Jónsi Win Annie Award for ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’
Composer John Powell and singer/ songwriter Jónsi were honored with an Annie Award in the Outstanding Achievement, Music in an Animated Feature Production category for the music from DreamWorks Animation’s hit animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2. Producer Bonnie Arnold accepted their award at the ceremony at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles. The other contenders in the category were Danny Elfman for Mr. Peabody and Sherman, Nicole Renald for Cheatin’, Bruno Coulais & Kila for Song of the Sea
and Joe Hisaishi for The Tale of Princess Kaguya
. Powell has previously won four Annie Awards for the original How to Train Your Dragon film, as well as the features Kung Fu Panda and Shrek and the short Kung Fu Panda: Secret of the Furious Five.
