The 89th Academy Awards ceremony was held last night. Among the music-related highlights was Justin Hurwitz receiving his first two Oscars for his music for La La Land and lyricists Benj Pasek & Justin Paul receiving the award for the song City of Stars from Damien Chazelle’s musical. Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sting, Justin Timberlake and 2014 Oscar winner John Legend will perform at the 89th Oscars ceremony, show producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd announced today. Auli’i Cravalho will join Miranda to perform his Oscar-nominated song How Far I’ll Go written for Moana. Sting will perform The Empty Chair from Jim: The James Foley Story, the Oscar nominated song he co-wrote with three-time Oscar nominee J. Ralph. Timberlake will perform his Oscar-nominated song Can’t Stop The Feeling from the movie Trolls and Legend will perform both Audition (The Fools Who Dream) and City of Stars from La La Land, music by Justin Hurwitz; lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.
Ariana Grande & John Legend to Perform ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Title Song
Walt Disney Records has announced that Ariana Grande and John Legend are set to perform a new version of the song Beauty and the Beast from Disney’s live-action film adaptation of the same title. The ballad written by Alan Menken and featuring lyrics by Howard Ashman was originally performed by Celine Dion & Peabo Bryson and received an Academy Award and a Grammy Award among other prizes. The new rendition of the classic song is produced Ron Fair and will be included on the official soundtrack album, which also features other new recordings of the original songs from the animated feature,as well as three new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice. ‘Southside With You’ Soundtrack Announced
Columbia Records will release a soundtrack album for the drama Southside with You. The album features the original song Start by John Legend (who serves as an executive producer on the movie), as well as tracks by Janet Jackson, The Delfonics, Soul II Soul, Slick Rick, Bill Withers, Al B. Sure!, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and Teddy Pendergrass. The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, August 26. Southside with You is written and directed by Richard Tanne and stars Tika Sumpter, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Parker Sawyers and Jerod Haynes. The movie recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate named Barack Obama tried to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson during a daylong date.

Common & John Legend to Perform ‘Glory’ from ‘Selma’ at Oscars
Academy Awards show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today that musical artists Common and John Legend will perform their Oscar-nominated song Glory at the 87th Oscars, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, on Sunday, February 22. The song written by John Stephens (a.k.a. John Legend) and Lonnie Lynn (a.k.a. Common) for Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-nominated film Selma starring David Oyelowo, Tom Wilkinson and Oprah Winfrey is one of the five nominated songs in the Best Original Song category, alongside Everything Is Awesome from The Lego Movie, Grateful from Beyond the Lights, I’m Not Gonna Miss You from Glen Campbell…I’ll Be Me and Lost Stars from Begin Again. The 87th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center.
