Weekly Film Music Roundup (August 23, 2013)

Three new movies are opening nationwide this week:

Already in theaters since this past Wednesday is the fantasy adventure The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones directed by Harald Zwart and starring Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, Lena Headey, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Aidan Turner, Robert Sheehan, Kevin Durand and Jared Harris. Republic Records has released a soundtrack featuring the film’s songs by artists including Zedd, Jessie J, AFI and Demi Lovato. Check out our previous article for the full details. The film’s original score is composed by Atli Orvarsson (Vantage Point, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters). A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score has been released on Milan Records. Also opening wide is the comedy The World’s End directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan. ABKCO Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film by artists including Primal Scream, Blur, The Doors, Kylie Minogue, Soup Dragons, Suede, Pulp, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Soul II Soul (click here for the full details). ‘The World’s End’ Score Album Released

Back Lot Music has released a score album for Edgar Wright’s final movie in his Cornetto trilogy, The World’s End. The album features the film’s original music composed by Steven Price (Gravity) who previously scored the Wright-produced horror comedy Attack the Block and served as music editor on the director’s last feature Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon. Audio clips are embedded after the jump. As previously reported, ABKCO Records has also released a separate soundtrack album featuring the film’s songs today. The World’s End reunites Wright with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost following Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan are co-starring in the comedy, which opened in the UK earlier this summer and will be released in the US this Friday, August 23 by Focus Features.

Edgar Wright’s ‘The World’s End’ to Feature Music by Steven Price

Steven Price has been tapped to score the upcoming comedy The World’s End. The film is directed by Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Rosamund Pike, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan. The movie is the third part of the director’s “cornetto” trilogy of comedies written by Wright and Pegg and starring Pegg and Frost, following Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz (scored by David Arnold). The comedy follows five childhood friends who reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier and unwittingly become humankind’s only hope for survival. Nira Park (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Paul) is producing for Big Talk Pictures and Tim Bevan & Eric Fellner (Love Actually, Atonement) are producing for Working Title Films. Price has previously scored last year’s Attack the Block, which was executive produced by Wright.

Steven Price to Score Alfonso Cuaron’s ‘Gravity’

Steven Price has signed on to score Alfonso Cuaron’s highly anticipated sci-fi thriller Gravity. The film stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as two astronauts who have to fight to survive on a remote space station after satellite debris wipes out the rest of the crew and destroys most of the station. Cuaron has written the movie’s screenplay with his son Jonas and Rodrigo Garcia (Albert Nobbs, Mother and Child) and is also producing the Warner Bros. Pictures and Heydey Films production with David Heyman (Harry Potter series, I Am Legend). The director’s regular cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki is lensing the film. Price is best known for his score for last year’s British alien invasion comedy Attack the Block.

Three new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the sci-fi western Cowboys & Aliens directed by Jon Favreau, produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde, Harrison Ford, Paul Dano and Sam Rockwell. The film’s music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score is now available to download on iTunes and will be released on CD on August 16. Also opening wide is the romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, written by Dan Fogelman and starring Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Kevin Bacon and Marisa Tomei. Christophe Beck and Nick Urata composed the movie’s score. A soundtrack album featuring twelve songs from the film has been released on Watertower Music. ‘Attack the Block’ Soundtrack Details

Decca Records will be releasing the soundtrack album for the action comedy Attack the Block in the US. The soundtrack includes the original score from the film by Steven Price, as well as the songs The Ends by Basement Jaxx and Get That Snitch by Mikis Michaelides. The album has previously only be released overseas and will be coming out stateside on July 26, 2011. The soundtrack will be available to download on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks below. Attack the Block is directed by Joe Cornish and stars Jodie Whittaker and Nick Frost. The movie follows a London gang of inner-city kids fighting alien creatures.
