The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences and ABC have published some of the music-related highlights of the 86th Academy Awards ceremony online. Check out the acceptance speeches of Steven Price who won the Oscar for his music for Gravity and Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Bobby Lopez who won the award for the song Let It Go from Frozen after the jump. Also embedded are the live performances of the songs Let It Go by Idina Menzel, Ordinary Love by U2, Happy by Pharrell Williams and The Moon Song by Karen O. The ceremony also featured a performance of Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Pink as a tribute to The Wizard of Oz, as well as the song The Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler for the In Memoriam tribute.

Steven Price Wins Oscar for ‘Gravity’
Steven Price has won his first Academy Award in the Best Original Score category for his music for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity. The composer was also nominated for the first time. The other contenders in the category were John Williams (The Book Thief), Alexandre Desplat (Philomena), William Butler & Owen Pallett (Her) and Thomas Newman (Saving Mr. Banks). All six nominated composers were in attendance at the awards ceremony.
In the Best Original Song category, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez received the award for the song Let It Go from Disney’s Frozen.
SCL Hosts Reception for Oscar-Nominated Composers & Songwriters
Yesterday afternoon, the Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) hosted its annual reception honoring the Academy Award-nominated composers and songwriters in the Best Original Score and Best Original Song category in Beverly Hills. SCL president Ashley Irwin introduced the nominees who briefly spoke to the audience. All six nominated composers in the score category were in attendance, including Alexandre Desplat, nominated for the sixth time for his score for Stephen Frears’ Philomena, who talked about the first Oscar concert this past week and thanked Academy governors Charles Fox and Arthur Hamilton for putting together the event. William Butler and Owen Pallett, nominated for the first time for their music from Her, were joined at the reception by Arcade Fire members Win Butler and Régine Chassagne and the film’s director Spike Jonze.
Steven Price to Score Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’
Edgar Wright has announced on Twitter that he will be scoring the director’s upcoming comic book film adaptation of Ant-Man. The film will star Paul Rudd in the title role of Scott Lang/Ant-Man, the superhero who can change size via an invented substance and can communicate with insects. Michael Douglas will be portraying scientist Hank Pym and Michael Pena has also been cast in an undisclosed role. Wright has also co-written the screenplay with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block). Kevin Feige (Iron Man, The Avengers, Thor, Captain America) is producing the Marvel Studios production. Price has previously scored Wright’s last feature The World’s End, as well as the Wright-produced horror comedy Attack the Block.
Steven Price to Score NBC’s ‘Believe’
Steven Price has confirmed in a recent interview with Classic FM that is composing the music for the upcoming NBC drama Believe. The show is created by Alfonso Cuarón & Mark Friedman and stars Jake McLaughlin, Johnny Sequoyah, Jamie Chung, Arian Moayed, Kyle MacLachlan and Delroy Lindo. The series follows a young girl with an extraordinary ability and a man sprung from prison who has been tasked with protecting her from the evil elements that hunt her power. Cuaron is also executive producing the Bonanza, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television production with J.J. Abrams & Bryan Burk (Lost, Star Trek), Jonas Pate and Hans Tobeason. Cuaron has also directed the pilot episode. Price has previously collaborated with the director on last year’s hit sci-fi thriller Gravity and has recently been Academy Award-nominated for his work on the film.
Steven Price Wins Critics’ Choice Movie Award for ‘Gravity’
Steven Price was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity at tonight’s 18th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Arcade Fire & Owen Pallett for Her, Thomas Newman for Saving Mr. Banks and Hans Zimmer for 12 Years a Slave.
In the Best Song category, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez won the award for Let It Go from Frozen.
Awards Contenders in Conversation
The Hollywood Reporter published its yearly roundtable conversation with a number of film composers in contention for the major awards. This year’s participating composers include Hans Zimmer (Rush, 12 Years a Slave), Thomas Newman (Saving Mr. Banks), Alan Silvestri (The Croods), Steven Price (Gravity), Christophe Beck (Frozen) and Henry Jackman (Captain Phillips). The composers talk about the biggest musical challenges on their films this year, their own personal favorite scores of their career and whether they look at box office numbers of the movies they scored. Steven Price to Score David Ayer’s ‘Fury’
Steven Price has been tapped to score David Ayer’s upcoming currently untitled WWII dramatic thriller, previously known as Fury. The film is written and directed by Ayer (screenwriter of Training Day) and stars Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, Michael Peña, Jason Isaacs and Scott Eastwood. The movie follows the commander of a Sherman tank and its five-man crew on a mission behind enemy lines in April 1945 as Nazi Germany collapses. Ayer is also producing the QED International and Le Grisbi production with Bill Block (W., Alex Cross), John Lesher (End of Watch, Blood Ties) and Ethan Smith. Price is best known for his score for this year’s box office hit and awards contender Gravity directed by Alfonso Cuaron. His other film scoring credits include Edgar Wright’s The World’s End and Attack the Block.

Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Guaranteed to top the weekend box office is the space drama Gravity directed by Alfonso Cuaron and starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. The film’s original score is composed by Steven Price (The World’s End, Attack the Block). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Also opening wide this week is the thriller Runner Runner directed by Brad Furman and starring Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton, Ben Affleck, Anthony Mackie, Michael Esper, Oliver Cooper and Ben Schwartz. Christophe Beck (The Hangover trilogy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) has composed the film’s original score. Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. A CD version will be released later this month. ‘Gravity’ Soundtrack Details
WaterTower Music will release a soundtrack album for Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi thriller Gravity. The album features the film’s original music composed by Steven Price (The World’s End, Attack the Block). The soundtrack will be released digitally on September 17, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips after the jump. Gravity stars Sandra Bullock as a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission and George Clooney as a veteran astronaut in command of his last flight before retiring. The movie follows the astronauts as they fight to survive on a remote space station after satellite debris wipes out the rest of the crew and destroys most of the station. The film just premiered at the Venice Film Festival to rave reviews and will be released in the US on October 4, 2013 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
