Five new movies are opening wide this week:

Opening today is the thriller Jack Reacher directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Werner Herzog, David Oyelowo and Robert Duvall. The film’s music is composed by Joe Kraemer who previously scored the director’s 2000 film The Way of the Gun. La-La Land Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally earlier this week. The release date for the physical version is set for early January. Also opening today is the comedy drama This is 40 written and directed by Judd Apatow and starring Paul Rudd, Leslie Mann, John Lithgow, Megan Fox, Iris Apatow, Maude Apatow, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Robert Smigel, Charlyne Yi and Albert Brooks. The film’s original score is composed by Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). A soundtrack album featuring one score track by the composer, as well as the film’s songs by artists including Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker and Lindsey Buckingham (all produced by Jon Brion), Wilco and Ryan Adams has been released on Capitol Records. ‘This is 40’ Soundtrack Details

The details of the soundtrack album for Judd Apatow’s comedy This is 40 have been revealed. The album features original songs by Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker and Lindsey Buckingham (all produced by Jon Brion), as well as new tracks from Wilco and Ryan Adams created specifically for the film. Also featured are tracks from Paul Simon, Loudon Wainwright, Yoko Ono, and The Avett Brothers, as well as a theme from the original score composed by Jon Brion (Magnolia, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind). The soundtrack will be released on December 11, 2012 by Capitol Records and is now available for pre-order on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio clips. This is 40 written and directed by Apatow stars Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann who reprise their roles from Knocked Up and also stars John Lithgow, Megan Fox, Iris Apatow, Maude Apatow, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Robert Smigel, Charlyne Yi and Albert Brooks.

Four new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the action film sequel The Expendables 2 directed by Simon West and starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film’s music is composed by Brian Tyler who previously scored the 2010 original film. Lionsgate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring Tyler’s music. Also opening wide is the stop-motion animated film ParaNorman directed by Sam Fell and Chris Butler and featuring the voice talent of Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck, Tempestt Bledsoe, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, Bernard Hill, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. Jon Brion has composed the film’s music. Relativity Music Group has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. The album features the film’s original music composed by Jon Brion (Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind, Magnolia). The soundtrack will be released on August 14, 2012 by Relativity Music Group and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Audio clips can be checked out below. Jon Brion to Score Judd Apatow’s ‘This is 40’

Jon Brion has signed on to score the upcoming comedy This is 40. The movie is written and directed by Judd Apatow and stars Jason Segel, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann who are reprising their roles from the 2007 hit comedy Knocked Up. Megan Fox, Melissa McCarthy and Albert Brooks are co-starring. Apatow is also producing the project with Barry Mendel (The Sixth Sense, Bridesmaids) and Clayton Townsend (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up). Brion has previously scored the Apatow-produced comedy Step Brothers in 2008. This is 40 marks the composer’s first collaboration with Apatow as a director. Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:

The sci-fi adventure prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes directed by Rupert Hyatt and starring James Franco, Freida Pinto, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow and Brian Cox is already guaranteed to top the weekend box office. The film’s music is composed by Patrick Doyle. A soundtrack album featuring the Doyle’s score will be released on CD later this month on Varese Sarabande. The other wide release of the week is the comedy The Change-Up directed by David Dobkin and starring Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Leslie Mann, Alan Arkin and Olivia Wilde. Focus Features has announced that Jon Brion has signed on to score the upcoming 3D stop-motion animated comedy thriller ParaNorman. The movie centers Norman, a misunderstood 13-year-old boy who is the only person in a small town that has the abilities to prevent an attack from zombies. The film’s voice cast includes Kodi Smit-McPhee, Casey Affleck, Tempestt Bledsoe, Jeff Garlin, John Goodman, Bernard Hill, Anna Kendrick, Leslie Mann, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Elaine Stritch, Tucker Albrizzi, Alex Borstein and Jodelle Ferland. The film is directed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away, The Tale of Desperaux) and Chris Butler (storyboard supervisor on Coraline) who also wrote the screenplay. Focus Features and Laika Entertainment have previously produced the 2009 Academy Award-nominated animated film Coraline.

Miranda July’s ‘The Future’ to get a score by Jon Brion

Jon Brion has been chosen as the composer for the upcoming indie drama The Future. The movie is written and directed by Miranda July and also features her in the film’s leading role. The film co-stars Hamish Linklater and David Warshofsky. July previously wrote and directed 2005’s indie hit Me and You and Everyone We Know, which featured a score by Michael Andrews. The Future centers around a couple that decides to adopt a stray cat which changes their perspective on life changes radically, literally altering the course of time and space and testing their faith in each other and themselves. The movie will premiere at this year’s Sundance film festival. No domestic distribution deal or release date has been announced yet.

Jon Brion has been chosen to provide the original score for the upcoming action cop comedy The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Eva Mendes, Dwayne Johnson and Samuel L. Jackson. The movie is directed by Adam McKay, who used Brion on his last movie Step Brothers back in 2008. Ferrell and Wahlberg play two mismatched New York City detectives, who seize an opportunity to step up like the city’s top cops whom they idolize. The movie marks Brion’s first film scoring project in almost 2 years when scored both Step Brothers and Synecdoche, New York. Sony Pictures will release The Other Guys on August 6.
