John Debney to Score Ivan Reitman’s ‘Draft Day’
John Debney is reteaming with director Ivan Reitman on the upcoming sports drama Draft Day. The film’s cast includes Kevin Costner, Jennifer Garner, Denis Leary, Chadwick Boseman, Frank Langella, Sean Combs, Terry Crews, Sam Elliott and Tom Welling. The movie centers on the manager of the Cleveland Browns who struggles to acquire the top draft pick for his team on the day of the draft. Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph have written the screenplay. Reitman is also producing the project with Ali Bell and Tom Pollock (Hitchcock) through his Montecito Motion Picture Company. Debney has previously worked together with Reitman on the 2011 romantic comedy No Strings Attached starring Natalie Portman & Ashton Kutcher.
‘Bonnie & Clyde’ Soundtrack Details
La-La Land Records will release a soundtrack album for the television event Bonnie & Clyde. The album features the original score from the mini-series composed by Academy Award nominee John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Elf, Iron Man 2). The soundtrack will be released on December 10, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Bonnie & Clyde is directed by Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy) and stars Emile Hirsch and Holliday Grainger in the title roles of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, the 1930s couple whose crime spree enraptured the American public. Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Sarah Hyland, Elizabeth Reaser, Lane Garrison, Austin Hebert and Dale Dickey are also starring in the four hour mini-series, which will premiere over two nights on December 8 & 9 on the History, Lifetime and A&E networks.
‘Careful What You Wish For’ to Feature Music by John Debney, The Newton Brothers & Josh Debney
John Debney has composed the theme for the upcoming thriller Careful What You Wish For. The composer’s son Josh Debney and The Newton Brothers have written the score for the movie directed by Elizabeth Allen (Aquamarine, Ramona and Beezus) and starring Isabel Lucas, Dermot Mulroney, Nick Jonas, Graham Rogers and Paul Sorvino. The film follows a young, lonely wife of a wealthy businessman who rents the lake house next door to a high-school student. When the student starts an affair with the wife, he gets more than he bargained for. Robert L. Stein, Michael A. Helfant & Bradley Gallo are producing the project for Troika Pictures, alongside Ashok Amritraj (Bandits, Shopgirl) for Hyde Park and Kirk D’Amico.
Varèse Sarabande Celebrates 35th Anniversary with Halloween Concert Gala
This past Saturday night, film music record label Varèse Sarabande hosted their 35th Anniversary Halloween Concert Gala at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California. The concert was hosted and produced by Robert Townson and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) and Chorale. Highlights included a suite from the comic book film adaptation of Ghost Rider, which Golden Globe-nominated composer Christopher Young (The Shipping News, Spider-Man 3) arranged specifically for the concert and which featured a full orchestra, chorus and a heavy metal band led by Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo. The performance was received with a standing ovation by the audience. Additionally, Oscar nominee Marco Beltrami (3:10 to Yuma, World War Z) made his concert conducting debut with a suite of his scores for Alex Proyas’ I, Robot and Knowing, as well as Guillermo del Toro’s Mimic and Hellboy.
John Debney’s ‘Hocus Pocus’ Score Released
Intrada Records has announced the world premiere soundtrack release for Walt Disney Pictures’ 1993 Halloween comedy Hocus Pocus directed by Kenny Ortega and starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. The album features the film’s complete score composed and conducted by John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf). The score also features the Garden Of Magic theme composed by James Horner, which Debney adapted in portions of his own original score. Also included on the soundtrack are a number of alternates, including a never-before-heard alternate end credits piece. Expected to top the weekend box office is the drama The Butler starring Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, John Cusack, Jane Fonda, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz, James Marsden, David Oyelowo, Vanessa Redgrave, Alan Rickman, Liev Schreiber and Robin Williams. The film’s original music is composed by Rodrigo Leão (Lisbon Story). Verve International has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score earlier this year. ‘Jobs’ Soundtrack Details
Garage Ingenuity has released a soundtrack album for the biopic Jobs. The album features the film’s original score written by Academy Award-nominated composer John Debney (The Passion of the Christ, Iron Man 2, Elf). Also included are the songs featured in the film by artist including REO Speedwagon, Parish Hall, Toad The Wet Sprocket and Freddy Monday. The soundtrack is now available to download on Amazon. La-La Land Records will release a physical version on September 10, 2013 (click here to pre-order the CD). Audio clips are embedded after the jump. Jobs is directed by Joshua Michael Stern (Swing Vote) and stars Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs. The movie chronicles the defining 30 years of the entrepreneur’s life. Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas, J.K. Simmons, James Woods, Lesley Ann Warren, and Matthew Modine are co-starring. The biopic will be released nationwide this Friday, August 16.

The four hour series is directed by Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy, Double Jeopardy) and stars Emile Hirsch and Holliday Grainger in the title roles of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker, the 1930s couple whose crime spree enraptured the American public. Holly Hunter, William Hurt, Sarah Hyland, Elizabeth Reaser, Lane Garrison, Austin Hebert and Dale Dickey are co-starring. Craig Zadan and Neil Meron (Steel Magnolias, The Bucket List, Chicago) are producing the Sony Pictures Television production. John Rice and Joe Batteer (Windtalkers, Blown Away) have written the script. Debney has previously co-scored the History Channel’s Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning mini-series Hatfields & McCoys for Sony Pictures Television.
Varèse Sarabande’s 35th Anniversary Celebration
On Saturday night, film music label Varèse Sarabande hosted their 35th Anniversary Concert Gala at the Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, California. The sold out concert was hosted and produced by Varese Sarabande’s Robert Townson and performed by the Golden State Pops Orchestra (GSPO) and Chorale. The event featured a special guest performance by Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer who performed a suite from Driving Miss Daisy on piano featuring Incubus guitarist Mike Einziger and violinist Ann Marie Calhoun. The suite also included a preview from the composer’s score for the upcoming Superman reboot Man of Steel. Additionally, Academy Award-winner Michael Giacchino (Up) conducted the world premiere of a special suite from his score for Star Trek Into Darkness and John Powell (The Bourne Trilogy) conducted a suite from his Oscar-nominated score for Dreamworks Animation’s How to Train Your Dragon.
