Abel Korzeniowski has been tapped to score the upcoming Showtime original series Penny Dreadful. The horror drama is created by John Logan (Hugo, Gladiator, The Aviator) and stars Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Reeve Carney, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway, Billie Piper and Danny Sapani. The eight-episode series follows some of literature’s most famously terrifying characters – including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel Dracula – as they become embroiled in Victorian London. Logan is also executive producing the series with Academy Award-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty, The Road to Perdition) and Neal Street’s Pippa Harris (Call the Midwife, The Hollow Crown).

Weekly Film Music Roundup (October 11, 2013)
Two new movies are opening wide this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the docudrama Captain Phillips directed by Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, United 93) and starring Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Barkhad Abdi, Barkhad Abdirahman, Faysal Ahmed, Mahat M. Ali, Michael Chernus, Corey Johnson and Max Martini. The film’s music is composed by Henry Jackman (X-Men: First Class, Wreck-It-Ralph). Varese Sarabande has released a soundtrack album for the film featuring the composer’s score earlier this week. Also opening wide is the action sequel Machete Kills written and directed by Robert Rodriguez and starring Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir and Mel Gibson. The film’s music is composed by Rodriguez himself and Carl Thiel (Grindhouse: Planet Terror, Shorts). Morada Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, as well as an original end title track by Tito & Tarantula (From Dusk Till Dawn) and two tracks by Chingon. ‘Romeo & Juliet’ Soundtrack Details
The details of the soundtrack album for Carlo Carlei’s new film adaptation of Romeo & Juliet have been revealed. The album features the film’s original score composed by Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man, W.E.). The soundtrack will be released digitally on October 8, 2013 and physically later this year. Romeo & Juliet based on William Shakespeare’s play and adapted by Julian Fellowes (Downton Abbey, Gosford Park) stars Douglas Booth & Hailee Steinfeld in the title roles, alongside Damian Lewis, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ed Westwick, Stellan Skarsgard and Paul Giamatti. The drama is set to be released on October 11, 2013 by Relativity Media.
Abel Korzeniowski Scoring Carlo Carlei’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’
Abel Korzeniowski has recently composed a new score for the new film adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. The composer recorded his music on the Eastwood Scoring Stage in Los Angeles, CA at the end of last month with a full orchestra and choir. James Horner previously recorded a score for the film at the end of last year at Abbey Road Studios in London. Romeo & Juliet based on Shakepeare’s play is directed by Carlo Carlei and adapted for the screen by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park). The film stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld in the title roles. The movie’s cast also includes Damian Lewis, Natascha McElhone, Lesley Manville, Ed Westwick, Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Stellan Skarsgard. The movie will be released in the UK on July 26. Realtivity Media has picked up domestic rights for the movie for a release on October 11, 2013.
BMI Sundance Roundtable Videos
BMI has published several videos from last week’s film composer/director roundtable Music & Film: The Creative Process at the Sundance Film Festival. Participants include composer Terence Blanchard, composer Mark Isham and director George Tillman, Jr. whose drama The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete premiered at the festival, composer Ludwig Goransson and writer/director Ryan Cogler whose feature Fruitvale received the top Sundance honor and was picked up for distribution by The Weinstein Company, composer Rob Simonsen and director James Ponsoldt whose coming of age drama The Spectacular Now was acquired by A24 for a theatrical release (Simonsen also scored the comedy The Way, Way Back, which was picked up by Fox Searchlight as the biggest sale at the festival), composer Abel Korzeniowski and director Randy Moore who worked together on the controversial Disney theme park-set Escape from Tomorrow, composer Dustin O’Halloran who scored the indie drama Breathe In, his second project for Drake Doremus following Like Crazy and composer Craig Wedren and director Jill Solloway who collaborated on the comedy Afternoon Delight.
‘Escape from Tomorrow’ Soundtrack Released
A soundtrack for the black-and-white horror fantasy movie Escape from Tomorrow has been released this week. The album features the film’s original score composed and conducted by Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man, W.E.). The composer recorded his music at the Eastwood Scoring Stage at Warner Bros. Studios. The soundtrack is now available digitally on Amazon. Audio clips are available after the jump. Escape from Tomorrow is written and directed by Randy Moore and stars Roy Abramsohn, Elena Schuber, Katelynn Rodriguez, Annet Mahendru, Danielle Safady and Alison Lees-Taylor. The film follows a family man on the last day of a Disney World vacation with his wife and two children who begins to be haunted by disturbing imagery. The movie just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
Alberto Iglesias Named Film Composer of the Year 2012 at World Soundtrack Awards
Alberto Iglesias was chosen as Film Composer of the Year 2012 at the World Soundtrack Awards 2012, tonight’s closing event of the 39th Ghent Film Festival. Iglesias also received an award for his score for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in the Best Original Film Score of the Year 2012 category. The composer’s other scores of the past year include The Monk (Le Moine) and Pedro Almadovar’s The Skin I Live In (La Piel Que Habito). In the Discovery of the Year category, Brian Byrne was awarded for his score for Rodrigo Garcia’s Albert Nobbs starring Glenn Close. The composer also received an award for the original song Lay Your Head Down from Albert Nobbs, which features lyrics by Glenn Close and is performed by Sinead O’Connor. The Public Choice Award went to Abel Korzeniowski for his music for Madonna’s W.E..
Abel Korzeniowski Recording the Score for ‘Escape from Tomorrow’
Abel Korzeniowski has recently recorded his orchestral score for the romantic fantasy drama Escape from Tomorrow. The film is written and directed by Randy Moore and follows a middle-aged father whose sanity is challenged by a chance encounter with two young women on holiday. Roy Abrahmson (Showtime’s Weeds), Elena Schuber, Katelynn Rodriguez, Jack Dalton, Danielle Safany, Annet Mahendru and Alison Lees-Taylor are starring in the movie. Gioia Marchese is producing the project for Mankurt Media. The Golden Globe-nominated composer (A Single Man, W.E.) recorded his score at Warner Bros.’ Eastwood Scoring Stage. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in most theaters is the supernatural thriller Chronicle directed by Josh Trank and starring Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell and Ashley Hinshaw. Milan Records has released a soundtrack album featuring 14 electro and indie rock tracks from the movie by artists including Blond Acid Cult, The LongCut, Bad Veins, Simian Mobile Disco, Deastro, Ab & The Sea, Capsule, Congorock and M83. Also opening wide is the gothic horror thriller The Woman in Black directed by James Watkins and starring Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Sophie Stuckey and Liz White. The film’s score is composed by Marco Beltrami. Silva Screen Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally next Tuesday, February 7 and the CD version is set for a release on March 27. ‘W.E.’ Soundtrack Details
Interscope Records will be releasing the official soundtrack album for Madonna’s drama W.E. The album features the original score from the movie composed by Abel Korzeniowski (A Single Man) who received a Golden Globe nomination for his music. Also included on the soundtrack is the Golden Globe-winning song Masterpiece, performed and co-written by Madonna. The album will be released digitally on January 31, 2012 and will be available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio clips from all tracks on the soundtrack. W.E. starring Andrea Riseborough, Abbie Cornish, Natalie Dormer, Richard Coyle, Oscar Isaac and James D’Arcy received an Oscar-qualifying run last month and is set for a release in select cities on February 3.
