Two new movies are opening wide this Memorial Day weekend:

Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 directed by Jennifer Yuh and featuring the voice talent of Jack Black  Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Gary Oldman, David Cross, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Liu, Michelle Yeoh, Dennis Haysbert, Victor Garber and Dustin Hoffman is opening in almost 4000 theaters. The film’s music is by Hans Zimmer and John Powell. A score album has been released by Varese Sarabande. For details and audio clips, visit our previous article. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel The Hangover Part II directed by Todd Phillips and starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson. The film’s score is by Christophe Beck. No score album has been announced, but a soundtrack including the songs featured in the movie has been released by Watertower Music. Terence Blanchard Scoring ‘Red Tails’

While Terence Blanchard has announced his involvement in the WWII drama Red Tails almost two years ago, some details on the film’s music have finally been revealed. Jazz Corner (via The Playlist) reports that the score will be recorded this June in Prague. The movie produced by George Lucas is based on the true story of the Tuskegee Airmen in World War II and tells the story of a group of African-American combat pilots at battle.  The film stars Cuba Gooding, Jr., Terrence Howard and Bryan Cranston. The project will be the first non-Star Wars or Indiana Jones picture from Lucasfilm in almost 20 years. The drama is directed by Anthony Hemingway (Treme, True Blood) and John Ridley (U-Turn, Three Kings) has written the screenplay based on an story by Lucas. Read the rest of this entry »

Rachel Portman to Score ‘I Don’t Know How She Does It’

According to the film’s trailer, Rachel Portman will be scoring the upcoming romantic comedy I Don’t Know How She Does It. The film starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan, Greg Kinnear, Christina Hendricks, Kelsey Grammer, Seth Meyers and Olivia Munn centers on a working mother who is desperately trying to juggle marriage, children and a high-stress job as a financial executive. The movie is directed by Douglas McGrath, who has collaborated with Portman on several films including Emma, for which she has won an Academy Award, as well as Nicholas Nickleby and Infamous. The comedy is based on the bestselling novel by Allison Person and adapted for the screen by Aline Brosh McKenna (The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, Morning Glory). Read the rest of this entry »

Hans Zimmer and Rodrigo y Gabriela on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’

Spinner Music has recently uploaded a new short video interview with Hans Zimmer and Rodrigo y Gabriela focusing on the contributions of the Mexican musical duo to score for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The site has also published a music video of the track The Pirate That Should Not Be from the film’s soundtrack, in which the musicians can be seen performing the rhythmic guitar parts of the track. In related news, Rodrigo y Gabriela have revealed in a recent interview with Vanity Fair that they will be working on another film that a composer of Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions is scoring. Michael Andrews to Score ‘Five-Year Engagement’

Film Music Reporter has learned that Michael Andrews will be scoring the upcoming comedy Five-Year Engagement. The movie is produced by Judd Apatow and stars Emily Blunt, Jason Segel, Alison Brie, Rhys Ifans, Chris Pratt and Mindy Kaling. According to the official synopsis, the film looks at what happens when an engaged couple keeps getting tripped up on the long walk down the aisle. The film is directed by Nicholas Stoller who worked with composer Lyle Workman on his previous movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to the Greek. Stoller co-wrote the project’s screenplay with Sarah Marshall writer and star Jason Segal. Andrews has previously worked on several Judd Apatow-produced films, including Apatow’s last directorial effort Funny People and most recently on the hit comedy Bridesmaids, which is currently playing in theaters. Soundtrack Album for Klaus Badelt’s ‘The Prodigies’ Score announced

Milan Records has announced a soundtrack release for the upcoming French animated film The Prodigies. The album includes Klaus Badelt‘s original score from the movie, which was recorded with the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra. Also featured on the soundtrack are two songs by Outlines and Mowglly. The album will be released in Europe on June 13, 2011. No word yet on a domestic release. For audio clips, visit Amazon.co.uk. ‘Sympathy for Delicious’ Soundtrack announced

Lakeshore Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the indie drama Sympathy for Delicious. The album includes the film’s score by the Canadian indie rock band The Besnard Lakes, as well as several songs by the fictional band in the movie Burnt the Diphthongs feat. Cedric Bixler, Orlando Bloom, DJ Disk, Juliette Lewis, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Deantoni Parks. Other artists featured on the album are Do Make Say Think, The Kills and The Bee Gees. The album will be released on June 7, 2011 and is now available to pre-order on Amazon. Sympathy for Delicious is actor Mark Ruffalo’s directing debut and stars himself, Christopher Thornton, Juliette Lewis, Orlando Bloom, Laura Linney and Noah Emmerich. Read the rest of this entry »

J. Ralph to Score ‘Arbitrage’

J. Ralph has been hired to score the upcoming indie drama Arbitrage.  The film stars Richard Gere, Tim Roth, Susan Sarandon, Laetitia Casta, Brit Marling and Josh Pais. The movie written and directed by Nicholas Jarecki centers on a troubled hedge fund magnate who is forced to turn to an unlikely ally when he makes an error. Nicholas is the brother of director Andrew Jarecki (Capturing the Friedmans, All Good Things) and makes his live action feature directing debut on the project. Laura Bickford (Traffic, Duplicity), Robert Salerno (21 Grams, A Single Man), Kevin Turen (An American Crime) and Justin Nappi are producing. Nicola Piovani’s ‘The Conquest’ Soundtrack released

The French biopic The Conquest (La conquete) recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and also opened in France last week. The film’s music is composed by Academy Award-winning composer Nicola Piovani (Life is Beautiful) and has recently been released commercially. The soundtrack album featuring 14 tracks from Piovani’s score is currently available to download on Amazon. For a preview of all tracks, check out the audio clips below. The Conquest takes a look at French president Nicolas Sarkozy’s rise to power. The film is directed by Xavier Durringer (Chok-Dee) and stars Florence Pernel, Bernard Le Coq and Samuel Labarthe. David Wingo & Jeff McIlwain to Score David Gordon Green’s ‘The Sitter’

David Wingo and Jeff McIlwain have signed on to score David Gordon Green’s comedy The Sitter. The film stars Jonah Hill, Sam Rockwell, Ari Grayner, Erin Daniels, Jessica Hecht and Method Man. The movie follows a college student, suspended for the semester and living at home with his single mom, who has a night to remember when he gets talked into baby-sitting the eccentric kids next door. Michael De Luca (The Social Network) is producing. Gordon Green has previously collaborated with Wingo on all of his early independent features including George Washington and All the Real Girls, which the composer co-scored with Michael Linnen. Wingo and Linnen also contributed additional music for the Philip Glass-scored thriller Undertow. Wingo and McIlwain first collaborated on the 2007 drama Snow Angels starring Kate Beckinsale.
