Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack release for the family comedy Mr. Popper’s Penguins. The album includes the original score from composer Rolfe Kent, who collaborated on the project with director Mark Waters for the sixth time. The orchestral score was recorded earlier this month on the Fox Alfred Newman scoring stage in Los Angeles. The soundtrack will be released on June 28, 2011 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. Over the last couple of days, the romance The Artist has been getting a lot of attention at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Likewise, the film’s music composed by French composer Ludovic Bource has been receiving a lot of praise from critics and might be an early contender for the upcoming Awards season. The black-and-white silent film takes place in 1927 Hollywood and focuses on a silent movie star whose career seems about to be ended because of the arrival of the talkies. At the same time, a pretty young extra sees the new format as an opportunity to launch her star. Klaus Badelt Taking Over ‘Seven Days in Utopia’

Klaus Badelt is the new composer of the upcoming sports drama Seven Days in Utopia. He is replacing William Ross, who was originally attached to the project as reported last year. The film starring Robert Duvall, Melissa Leo and Lucas Black tells the story of Luke Chisolm, a talented young golfer set on making the pro tour. When his first big shot turns out to be a very public disaster, Luke escapes the pressures of the game and finds himself unexpectedly stranded in Utopia, Texas. ‘The Big C’ Soundtrack announced

Epic Records has announced a soundtrack release for the Showtime show The Big C. The album includes the show’s main title song Game Called Life by the Leftover Cuties, as well a suite from Marcelo Zarvos‘ score for the first season of the hit show. Other artists featured on the album are The Staple Singers, Sara Bareilles, Franz Ferdinand, Delta Spirit and Modest Mouse. Profits from sales of the soundtrack will reportedly be donated to Stand Up To Cancer, a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Aaron Zigman to Score ‘Good Deeds’

Aaron Zigman is set to reunite with Tyler Perry on the director’s latest project Good Deeds. Perry is directing, writing, producing and starring in the romantic drama about an affluent and successful entrepreneur who’s about to get married when he becomes enamored with a down-on-her-luck single mom. His co-stars include Thandie Newton, Rebecca Romijn, Gabrielle Union and Jamie Kennedy. The project, which is currently being shot in Atlanta will be Zigman’s and Perry’s ninth collaboration following the comedy We the Peeples, which is produced by the filmmaker and is currently in post-production. Hans Zimmer Joins WME Talent Agency

As reported by Variety and Deadline last week, the talent agency WME has signed composer Hans Zimmer, who was previously with the Gorfaine-Schwartz agency. WME has only recently started getting into representing film composers by hiring Amos Newman, the son of Academy Award-winning composer and songwriter Randy Newman. Deadline reported last month that he will be leading a newly formed film, TV, game, online and mobile division of the agency’s music department. The new unit will work to integrate WME music clients, including Kanye West, Lady Gaga, The Chemical Brothers, and Nine Inch Nails into film, television, gaming, online, and mobile platforms. Newman himself has been working for the Gorfaine-Schwartz agency for the last couple of years, where he oversaw the career of Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman. According to Variety, composers David Holmes, David Newman and Alan Elliott are also among WME’s other recent signees.

This weekend, Howard Shore was among the recipients of the Governor’s General’s Performing Arts Awards. The awards celebrate Canadian performers whose extraordinary lifetime achievements have contributed significantly to the enrichment of Canada’s cultural life. The Music of the Lord of the Rings Films reports that the National Board of Canada has produced six short films to celebrate the lives of the 2011 recipients. The short about Shore is called A Composer’s Dream and demonstrates how the Academy Award-winner has distinguished himself as one of Canada’s most accomplished and versatile composers. Dave Stewart Scoring ‘Unlawful Killing’

Dave Stewart has scored the documentary Unlawful Killing, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last Friday. The film about the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed on August 31, 1997 is directed by British actor and filmmaker Keith Allen (Trainspotting, Shallow Grave). The movie mixes interviews with recreations of some of the key moments from the official inquest. According to the film’s press release, the questions the film asks will inevitably shake the public’s perceptions of how Diana and her partner Dodi Fayed died. Buena Vista Records will be releasing the soundtrack album for the comic book adaptation of Captain America: The First Avenger. The album is set to be released on July 19, 2011. No announcement has been made yet about the soundtrack’s contents, but it is expected that Alan Silvestri‘s score, as well as composer Alan Menken‘s and lyricist David Zippel‘s song for the film will be included on the release. W.G. Snuffy Walden has recently scored a couple of new pilots for the upcoming TV season. The crime drama Hail Mary centers on a suburban single mom living in Atlanta who teams up with a hustler to solve crimes. The pilot stars Minnie Driver, Brandon T. Jackson, Stephen Tobolowsky and Enrique Murciano. The project is created by Jeff Wadlow (Cry Wolf, Never Back Down) and the pilot is directed by Brad Silberling (Casper, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events).
