Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:
Opening in the US and select international territories is the sci-fi action monster movie Pacific Rim directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman. The film’s music is composed by Ramin Djawadi (Iron Man, Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music, which also features former Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello and singer Priscilla as soloists. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel Grown Ups 2 directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade, Salma Hayek, Maya Rudolph, Maria Bello and Nick Swardson. The film’s original score is composed by Rupert Gregson-Williams (Over the Hedge, Click, Bee Movie) who previously scored the 2010 original film. No soundtrack album has been announced. Sony Classical will release the soundtrack album for the upcoming fantasy adventure sequel Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. The album features the film’s original score composed by Andrew Lockington (Journey to the Center of the Earth, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island). Also included is the song I Feel Alive by IAMEVE. The soundtrack will be released overseas on August 5, 2013. Check back on this page for the domestic release date and audio clips. Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is directed by Thor Freudenthal and stars Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson, Jake Abel, Leven Rambin, Stanley Tucci, Sean Bean, Nathan Fillion, Anthony Head, Missi Pyle, Yvette Nicole Brown and Mary Birdsong. The movie follows Percy Jackson and his friends as they head into the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece. The film is set to be released on August 7, 2013 by 20th Century Fox.
John Paesano has signed on to score the upcoming sci-fi mystery drama The Maze Runner. The movie is based on the bestselling young adult novel by James Dashner and is set in a post-apocalyptic era where a group of teenage boys trapped in an enormous maze seek their freedom. The film is directed by Wes Ball and stars Dylan O’Brien, Will Poulter, Patricia Clarkson, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Jacob Lattimore, Ki Hong Lee, Blake Cooper and Aml Ameen. Noah Oppenheim wrote the screenplay for the Temple Hill Entertainment and the Gotham Group production. The movie marks Paesano’s first major studio feature film project. The Maze Runner is set to be released on February 14, 2014 by 20th Century Fox.
Perseverance Records will release a soundtrack album for the sports drama Crooked Arrows. The album features the film’s original score composed and conducted by Brian Ralston (Graduation, Don’t Fade Away) and performed by the Hollywood Studio Symphony Orchestra. Lionsgate Records will release a soundtrack album for the action comedy sequel Red 2. The album features the film’s original score composed and conducted by Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, The Avengers). The soundtrack will be released digitally on July 16, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on
David Holmes and Keefus Ciancia have taken over scoring duties on Oliver Hirschbiegel’s biographical drama Diana. The movie stars Naomi Watts in the title role of Princess Diana and follows her the last two years of her life and the secret love affair she had shortly before her tragic death. Naveen Andrews is co-starring as Dr. Hasnat Khan, alongside Douglas Hodge, Geraldine James, Charles Edwards and Juliet Stevenson are co-starring. Stephen Jeffreys (The Libertine) wrote the screenplay and Robert Bernstein & Douglas Rae (Becoming Jane, The Water Horse, Nowhere Boy) are producing the project. Holmes is best known for his numerous collaborations with Steven Soderbergh, including the Ocean’s trilogy, Out of Sight and last year’s Haywire. Ciancia who is also known as Keefus Green has collaborated with T Bone Burnett on a number of projects and has most recently co-scored the first season of ABC’s Nashville.
Abel Korzeniowski has recently composed a new score for the new film adaptation of Romeo & Juliet. The composer recorded his music on the Eastwood Scoring Stage in Los Angeles, CA at the end of last month with a full orchestra and choir. James Horner previously recorded a score for the film at the end of last year at Abbey Road Studios in London. Romeo & Juliet based on Shakepeare’s play is directed by Carlo Carlei and adapted for the screen by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park). The film stars Douglas Booth and Hailee Steinfeld in the title roles. The movie’s cast also includes Damian Lewis, Natascha McElhone, Lesley Manville, Ed Westwick, Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Stellan Skarsgard. The movie will be released in the UK on July 26. Realtivity Media has picked up domestic rights for the movie for a release on October 11, 2013.

Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) music branch governors Charles Fox, Arthur Hamilton and David Newman have announced in an email to music branch members today that the Oscar-nominated songs and scores will be performed in a live concert for the first time in 2014. The special concert will take place during Oscar Week, on Thursday, February 27, 2014, at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles, CA. A symphony orchestra of Los Angeles studio musicians will perform a suite from each nominated score of up to 10 minutes in length. Subject to availability, each original composer will conduct his/her own work. The Academy is also planning a brief onstage conversation with composers and their directors about the process of creating music for motion pictures.
Carl Thiel has composed the score for the upcoming action sequel Machete Kills. The film is written and directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Danny Trejo in the title role of ex-Federale agent Machete who is recruited by the President of the United States to take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet. Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir and Mel Gibson are co-starring in the Troublemaker Studios production. Kyle Ward has written the screenplay based on a story by Robert & Marcel Rodriguez. Thiel previously scored Rodriguez’s Shorts and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World 4D and the Planet Terror segment from Grindhouse.
