Two new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the dramatic thriller Prisoners directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, Maria Bello, Terrance Howard, Viola Davis, Melissa Leo and Paul Dano. Jóhann Jóhannsson (Personal Effects, For Ellen) has composed the film’s score. WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music earlier this week. Also opening wide is the dance drama Battle of the Year directed by Benson Lee and starring Josh Holloway, Laz Alonso, Josh Peck, Caity Lotz and Chris Brown. The film’s original score is composed by Christopher Lennertz (Horrible Bosses, Revolution, Identity Thief). Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album for the film earlier this week. The album features a suite from the composer’s score, as well as the songs featured in the movie by such artists as The Roots, Chubb Rock, Kool Kojak, Speedometer, Digital Underground and PC’s Ltd. Varese Sarabande will release the official score album for the film adaptation of Ender’s Game. The soundtrack features the film’s original music composed by Steve Jablonsky (Transformers trilogy, Battleship, Gangster Squad). Varèse Sarabande Records will host a special Halloween Concert Gala as part of their worldwide 35th anniversary celebration on October 19, 2013 at the Warner Grand Theatre at 478 W 6th Street in San Pedro, CA. The concert will feature performances by composers including Marco Beltrami (Mimic, Hellboy, Scream), John Debney (Sin City, End of Days), Christopher Young (Ghost Rider, The Grudge, The Fly 2), Brian Tyler (Children of Dune, Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem), and Nathan Barr (True Blood, Hostel), as well as several surprise guests. Additional composers that are set to attend the event include Randy Edelman (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor), Joseph LoDuca (The Evil Dead), Lee Holdridge (The Mists of Avalon) and Cliff Eidelman (Christopher Columbus: The Discovery).
A behind-the-scenes video featurette on the music for the comedy drama Thanks for Sharing has been published. The video features an interview with composer Christopher Lennertz (Identity Thief, NBC’s Revolution) who performs one of the score’s theme on piano and talks about creating the score and the choice of instrumentation. Lakeshore Records will release a soundtrack album for the WikiLeaks drama The Fifth Estate. The album features the film’s original score composed by Carter Burwell (Fargo, True Grit, Being John Malkovich) who has previously collaborated with director Bill Condon on Gods and Monsters, Kinsey and the final two movies in the Twilight saga. Also included are the songs featured in the film, including Amon Tobin’s Always, Yppah’s Never Mess With Sunday, Tame Impala’s Elephant and Emika’s Come Catch Me. Milan Records will release the first official soundtrack album for Nicolas Winding-Refn’s 2009 Viking action adventure drama Valhalla Rising. The album features the film’s original music composed by Peter Peter and Peter Kyed. Also included are a number of cues by sound designers Giles Lamb and Douglas MacDougall. The soundtrack will be released overseas on October 7, 2013. Check back on this page for the details on the domestic release. Valhalla Rising starring Mads Mikkelsen, Alexander Morton, Stewart Porter, Maarten Stevenson, Matthew Zajac, Gary Lewis and Jamie Sives takes place in 1000 AD and follows a Norse warrior and chained prisoner who is forced to fight to the death for the entertainment of his captors. Bob Thiele and Paul Koch are scoring the new ABC drama Lucky 7. The show based on the British hit series The Syndicate is adapted by David Zabel (ER) and Jason Richman (Detroit 1-8-7) and follows a group of seven gas station employees in Queens, New York whose lives will be transformed by an unexpected lottery win. The series stars Summer Bishil, Lorraine Bruce, Alex Castillo, Christine Evangelista, Stephen Louis Grush, Matt Long, Anastasia Phillips, Luis Antonio Ramos and Isiah Whitlock Jr. Zabel and Richman are also executive producing the Amblin Television and ABC Studios production with Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank & Justin Falvey (The Americans, Under the Dome, Falling Skies), Kay Mellor. Paul McGuigan (Lucky Number Slevin, Wicker Park) has directed the pilot episode.
Milan Records has announced a soundtrack album for the documentary Generation Iron. The album features the film’s original music composed by Jeff Rona (White Squall, Chicago Hope, Phantom). Also featured is the opening and closing title song Never Gonna Stop by Mind the Gap and Solardrive & TC’s Some Say. Michael Brook has been tapped to score the upcoming indie drama Cry/Fly. The film marks the English language debut of director Claudia Llosa (The Milk of Sorrow) and stars Jennifer Connelly, Cillian Murphy and Melanie Laurent. The movie is set in Minnesota and northern Canada over two time periods and follows a mother who gets separated from her sick daughter and falcon-keeper son. Two decades later, the son is persuaded by a journalist to embark on a search for his now-famous mother. Llosa has also written the screenplay and Mark Johnson (Rain Man, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Notebook) is producing the America/Spanish co-production with Jose Maria Morales (XXY) and Ibon Cormenzana (Blancanieves, Blackthorn).
