John Tavener (1944 – 2013)

john-tavenerJohn Tavener has passed away at age 69. The British composer was best known for his concert work, but also worked on a couple of major films, most notably Alfonso Cuaron’s 2006 movie Children of Men. Tavener also composed the music for the international co-production Battle in Heaven directed by Carlos Reygadas and Werner Herzog’s documentary short Pilgrimage. The composer’s concert music was also used in a number of films, including Terence Malick’s The Tree of Life. He received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II in 2000 for services to music.Tavener died at his home in Child Okeford, Southern England. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Medora’ Soundtrack Announced

medoraABCKO Records will release a soundtrack album for the documentary Medora. The album features the film’s original music composed by Bobby Emmett, as well as tracks by Joe Lapaglia, Harlan, Chris Bathgate and The Press Delete. The soundtrack will be released digitally on November 19, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on AmazonMedora is directed by Andrew Cohn & Davy Rothbart and follows four boys from rural Medora, Indiana who fight to end their high school Basketball team’s losing streak as their dwindling town faces the threat of extinction. The movie premiered at this year’s SXSW Film Festival and was picked up for domestic distribution by Beachside and Film Buff. Junkie XL to Score ‘Divergent’

divergentJunkie XL is currently working on the score for the film adaptation of the young adult novel Divergent. The movie is directed by Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless) and stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Kate Winslet, Miles Teller, Aaron Eckhart, Ray Stevenson, Jai Courtney, Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Ashley Judd and Maggie Q. The film based on Veronica Roth’s first of a trilogy of novels is set in a post-apocalytic Chicago divided into five factions and follows 16-year-old Beatrice Prior whose life changes dramatically when she switches factions. Vanessa Taylor (Hope Springs, Jack & Bobby) and Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman) have written the screenplay. Read the rest of this entry »

killing-kennedyPremiering tonight on the National Geographic Channel is the drama Killing Kennedy directed by Nelson McCormick and starring Rob Lowe as President Kennedy, Will Rothhaar as Lee Harvey Oswald, Michelle Trachtenberg as Marina Oswald and Ginnifer Goodwin as Jacqueline Kennedy. mandelaThe details of the soundtrack album for the biographical drama Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom have been revaled. The album features the songs from the film, including the original song Ordinary Love by U2, as well as songs by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Art Blakey, The Special AKA, The Manhattan Brothers and The Havana Singers. The soundtrack will be released on December 10, 2013 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Check out audio clips below. As previously reported, the label will also release a separate soundtrack featuring the film’s original score composed by Alex Heffes. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is directed by Justin Chadwick and stars Idris Elba, Naomie Harris, Tony Kgoroge, Riaad Moosa, Zolani Mkiva, Jamie Bartlett, Lindiwe Matshikiza, Deon Lotz and Terry Pheto. Ryan Shore to Score ‘The List’

ryan-shoreRyan Shore has signed on to score the upcoming romantic comedy The List. The film is directed by Harris Goldberg and stars Patrick Fugit, Jennifer Morrison, Karen Gillan, Aaron Staton, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Giles Martini, Jobeth Williams and Victoria Tennant. The movie follows a man who takes on a list of self improvements in order to win the affection of his dream girl. Kristen D’Alessio has co-written the screenplay with Goldberg and is also producing the project for Goose’s List. The Grammy Award-winning composer whose previous scoring credits include Prime, Harvard Man and the video game Spy Hunter has previously collaborated with Goldberg on the 2007 drama Numb starring Matthew Perry. thor-the-dark-worldExpected to top the weekend box office is the superhero sequel Thor: The Dark World directed by Alan Taylor and starring Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård, Idris Elba, Christopher Eccleston, Kat Dennings,  Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Anthony Hopkins. Brian Tyler who previously scored Marvel’s Iron Man 3 earlier this year has composed the film’s music. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score digitally and Intrada Records will release a physical version. book-thiefOpening in limited release is the period drama The Book Thief directed by Brian Percival and starring Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Sophie Nelisse. The film’s original music is composed and conducted by Academy Award winner John Williams. Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on November 8. martin-phippsMartin Phipps is the composer of the upcoming drama The Keeping Room. The film is directed by Daniel Barber and stars Brit Marling, Hailee Steinfeld, Sam Worthington, Amy Nuttall and Ned Dehenny. The movie is set in the Civil War and follows three Southern women who are forced to defend their home from the onslaught of a band of soldiers who have broken off from the fast approaching Union Army. Julia Hart has written the screenplay. Jordan Horowitz (The Kids Are All Right) is producing the project for Gilbert Films, alongside Matt Williams, David McFadzean (Where the Heart Is), Judd Payne & Dete Meserve (Bernie) for Wind Dancer Films. ‘L’arbitro’ Soundtrack Details

The album features the film’s original music composed by Andrea Guerra (The Pursuit of Happiness, Hotel Rwanda). L’arbitro is directed by Paolo Zucca and stars Stefano Accorsi, Geppi Cucciari, Marco Messeri, Francesco Pannofino and Benito Urgu. The movie centers on an ambitious soccer referee who ends up handling a crucial match between rival soccer teams of two small Sardinian villages.
