Last night, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI) held its annual Film, TV & Visual Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Terence Blanchard was named BMI Icon in recognition of his significant contributions to the cinematic community. The composer who received his first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his music for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman and whose other scoring credits include Malcolm X, Inside Man and Red Tails was presented the award by the evening’s hosts, BMI Vice President, Film/TV Relations, Doreen Ringer-Ross and BMI President & CEO Mike O’Neill.

BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) announced today that film composer and celebrated jazz musician Terence Blanchard will be named a BMI Icon at the 35th annual BMI Film, TV & Visual Media Awards in recognition of his significant contributions to the cinematic community. The composer whose film scoring credits include Malcolm X, Inside Man, 25th Hour and Red Tails has received his first Academy Award nomination earlier this year for his music for Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. Past BMI Icon honorees include Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, Alexandre Desplat, Rachel Portman, David Newman, Thomas Newman, Danny Elfman, Harry Gregson-Williams and John Williams, among many others.
Ludwig Goransson Wins Grammy Award for ‘Black Panther’ Score
Ludwig Goransson has won the Grammy Award for his music for Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando & Andrew Wyatt won the award for the song Shallows from Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born.
Terence Blanchard to Score Kasi Lemmons’ ‘Harriet’
Terence Blanchard is reuniting with director Kasi Lemmons on the upcoming biographical drama Harriet. The film stars Cynthia Erivo in the title role, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles and Clarke Peters. The movie tells the story of iconic freedom fighter Harriet Tubman and centers on her escape from slavery and subsequent missions to free dozens of slaves through the Underground Railroad in the face of growing pre-Civil War adversity.

Four new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this week:
Expected to top the weekend box office is the shark thriller The Meg directed by Jon Turteltaub and starring Jason Statham, Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Winston Chao, Page Kennedy, Robert Taylor and Sophia Shuya Cai. The film’s original music is composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (The Chronicles of Narnia, Shrek, The Martian, Kingdom of Heaven, Man on Fire). Back Lot Music will release a soundtrack album for Spike Lee’s crime drama BlacKkKlansman. The album features the film’s original music composed by Terence Blanchard (Inside Man, The 25th Hour, Malcolm X, Red Tails, Summer of Sam). The soundtrack will be released digitally next Friday, August 10 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. BlacKkKlansman is written and directed by Spike Lee and stars John David Washington, Adam Driver, Laura Harrier and Topher Grace. The movie tells the story of a police detective who dared to challenge the Ku Klux Klan and thwart its attempts to take over Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Terence Blanchard has begun recording his score for the upcoming crime drama Black Klansman. The film is directed by Spike Lee and stars John David Washington, Topher Grace, Adam Driver, Jasper Paakkonen, Laura Harrier and Corey Hawkins. The movie is based on Ron Stallworth’s autobiography and tells the story of a police detective who dared to challenge the Ku Klux Klan and thwart its attempts to take over Colorado Springs, Colorado. Lee is also producing the Monkeypaw, QC Entertainment and Blumhouse production with Sean McKittrick (Donnie Darko), Raymond Mansfield, Shaun Redick, Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity) and Jordan Peele (Get Out).

Premiering on Wednesday, March 22, is the new Fox drama Shots Fired created by Gina Prince-Bythewood & Reggie Rock Bythewood and starring Sanaa Lathan, Stephan James, Helen Hunt, Richard Dreyfuss, Stephen Moyer and Aisha Hinds. The show’s original music is composed by Terence Blanchard (Inside Man, Malcolm X, The 25th Hour, Red Tails). Premiering on Friday, March 24, is the Netflix original movie The Most Hated Woman in America directed by Tommy O’Haver and starring Melissa Leo, Peter Fonda, Josh Lucas, Adam Scott, Juno Temple, Vincent Kartheiser, Rory Cochran, Michael Chernus, Sally Kirkland, Anna Camp and Alex Frost. Alan Azar (An American Affair) has composed the film’s original music. Opening in most theaters is the directed by F. Javier Gutierrez and starring Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan and Vincent D’Onofrio. The film’s original music is composed by Matthew Margeson (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Eddie the Eagle). Hans Zimmer who scored the original The Ring movie serves as the project’s executive music producer. According to the film’s credits, a soundtrack album will be released by Paramount Music, but no announcement has been made. Soundtrack for Taylor Hackford’s ‘The Comedian’ to Be Released
Blue Note Records will release a soundtrack album for Taylor Hackford’s comedy drama The Comedian. The album features the film’s original music composed by Terence Blanchard (Inside Man, 25th Hour, Malcolm X, Cadillac Records, Talk to Me) who collaborated with musicians including Kenny Barron, Carl Allen, David Pulphus, Ravi Coltrane and Khari Allen Lee on his score. The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, February 3 and will be available to download on Amazon, where you can also listen to audio samples. The Comedian is directed by Taylor Hackford (Ray, The Devil’s Advocate, An Officer and a Gentleman) and stars Robert De Niro, Leslie Mann, Danny Devito, Edie Falco, Veronica Ferres, Charles Grodin, Cloris Leachman, Patti Lupone, Lois Smith and Harvey Keitel. The movie revolves around a comic icon trying to reinvent himself with the audience only wanting to know him as the former TV character he once played.
