Weekly Film Music Roundup (November 2, 2018)

Three new movies are opening in theaters nationwide this weekend:

Expected to top the weekend box office is the biographical drama Bohemian Rhapsody directed by Bryan Singer and starring Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton, Gwilym Lee, Ben Hardy, Joseph Mazzello, Aiden Gillen, Tom Hollander and Mike Myers. The movie doesn’t feature an original score. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film performed by Queen. Also opening wide is the fantasy adventure The Nutcracker and the Four Realms directed by Lasse Hallstrom and starring Keira Knigthley, Mackenzie Foy, Misty Copeland, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren. James Newton Howard (The Hunger Games, King Kong, The Sixth Sense) has composed the film’s score based on themes from Tchaikovsky’s classic 1892 ballet score. Walt Disney Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score, as well an original song performed by Andrea Bocelli. Click here for the full album details.

Leo Birenberg to Score DreamWorks Animation’s ‘Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny’

Leo Birenberg is scoring DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming series Kung Fu Panda: The Paws of Destiny. The show based on the studios’ feature film franchise revolves around four panda kids who stumble upon a mystical cave beneath Panda Village, accidentally absorbing the chi of ancient and powerful kung fu warriors known as the Four Constellations, and must realize a destiny to save the world from an evil force. Mitch Watson (All Hail King Julien), Elliott Owen and Lane Lueras are producing the project.

Soundtrack Album for YouTube Red’s ‘Cobra Kai’ to Be Released

Madison Gate Records will release a soundtrack album for the YouTube Red original series Cobra Kai. The album features selections of the show’s original music composed by Zach Robinson and Leo Birenberg (Son of Zorn, Red Army, Big Time in Hollywood, FL, F*&% the Prom). The soundtrack will be released digitally tomorrow, May 4 and will be available to download on Amazon. La-La Land Records will release a CD version featuring additional tracks later this month. Cobra Kai is developed by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg and stars Ralph Macchio, William Zabka,Xolo Mariduena, Tanner Buchanan, Mary Mouser, Courtney Henggeler and Nichole Brown.

Premiering on Wednesday, May 2, is the YouTube Red original series Cobra Kai developed by Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg and starring Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. The show’s original music is composed by Leo Birenberg (Son of Zorn, Big Time in Hollywood, FL) and Zach Robinson (F*&% the Prom). Check out our previous news article to learn more about the Karate Kid sequel series, which will be available to stream exclusively on YouTube Red.

Premiering on Friday, May 4 is the sci-fi thriller Anon written and directed by Andrew Niccol and starring Clive Owen, Amanda Seyfried, Colm Feore and Sony Walger. Christophe Beck (Frozen, Ant-Man, The Hangover, Edge of Tomorrow, The Muppets) has composed the film’s original music. Leo Birenberg & Zach Robinson Scoring ‘Karate Kid’ Sequel Series ‘Cobra Kai’

Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson are scoring the upcoming YouTube Red original series Cobra Kai. The show is developed by Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine), Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar series, American Reunion) and stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka who will reprise their roles from the 1984 original film. The series is set 30 years after the events of the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament and follows Johnny Lawrence as he seeks redemption by reopening the infamous Cobra Kai karate dojo, reigniting his rivalry with a now successful Daniel LaRusso.

Songs from Fox’s ‘Son of Zorn’ Released

Fox Music has released four songs from last night’s episode, The Quest for Craig, of the Fox comedy Son of Zorn. The tracks are written by the show’s composer Leo Birenberg (Red Army, Big Time in Hollywood, FL). Check out the songs I Saw a Stranger, Sing You a Story, Whiskey & Zorn and Zorn Is at the Party, which are all available as to download as digital singles on Amazon. Leo Birenberg to Score Fox’s ‘Son of Zorn’

Leo Birenberg has been hired to score the upcoming Fox comedy Son of Zorn. The show is created by Reed Agnew & Eli Jorne (Wilfred) and starring Johnny Pemberton, Cheryl Hines, Tim Meadows, as well as Jason Sudeikis as the voice of Zorn. The live-action/animated hybrid series follows a legendary warrior who finds that reconnecting with his son and ex-wife, while suffering through a mundane office job and the banality of suburban life, is harder than waging actual war in his distant, mystical homeland of Zephyria. Agnew and Jorne are also executive producing the 20th Century Fox Television production with Phil Lord & Chris Miller (21/22 Jump Street, The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) and Seth Cohen (The Last Man on Earth).

Three new movies are opening nationwide this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the animated feature Strange Magic directed by Gary Rydstrom, produced by George Lucas and featuring the voices of Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare. Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge, Kick-Ass) serves as the film’s musical director and has also composed the original score. Hollywood Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the film performed by the voice cast. Also opening wide is the thriller The Boy Next Door directed by Rob Cohen, produced by Jason Blum and starring Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Guzman, John Corbett and Kristin Chenoweth. The film’s original music is composed by Randy Edelman who previously scored such films as Dragonheart, xXx and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor for Cohen and Nathan Barr (True Blood, The Americans). Back Lot Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the score earlier this week and Varese Sarabande will release a physical version next month. Click here for the full album details.
