Weekly Film Music Roundup (May 27, 2011)

Two new movies are opening wide this Memorial Day weekend:

Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 2 directed by Jennifer Yuh and featuring the voice talent of Jack Black Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Gary Oldman, David Cross, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Liu, Michelle Yeoh, Dennis Haysbert, Victor Garber and Dustin Hoffman is opening in almost 4000 theaters. The film’s music is by Hans Zimmer and John Powell. A score album has been released by Varese Sarabande. For details and audio clips, visit our previous article. Also opening wide is the comedy sequel The Hangover Part II directed by Todd Phillips and starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Justin Bartha, Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson. The film’s score is by Christophe Beck. No score album has been announced, but a soundtrack including the songs featured in the movie has been released by Watertower Music. Expanded ‘Scream’ Score by Marco Beltrami announced

Varese Sarabande has announced the newest titles in their CD Club series. Among the new releases is a deluxe edition of Marco Beltrami‘s score for Wes Craven’s original Scream film. Only about 12 minutes of music from the horror movie has previously been released on a compilation with the sequel’s score. The new album features more than an hour of music from the film, which introduced Beltrami to a wider audience. One track on the CD is credited to Christophe Beck, who also was just starting out at the time of the film’s release. The album is limited to 2000 copies and is now available to pre-order on Varese’s website, where you can see the full track list and listen to audio clips from the soundtrack. Scream was released in 1996 and it’s cast included Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Skeet Ulrich, Jamie Kennedy and Drew Barrymore.

‘The Hangover Part II’ Soundtrack Details

WaterTower Music has revealed the details for the soundtrack release of the comedy sequel The Hangover Part II. The album includes 12 songs from the movie. Artists featured on the soundtrack include Wolfmother, Danzig, Billy Joel, and Curtis Mayfield. Also included are several on-screen performances from the film, including the Thai wedding band, Ska Rangers, covering I Ran and Just The Way You Are, Mike Tyson singing One Night in Bangkok, as well as the song Allentown, performed by Ed Helms’ character. None of Christophe Beck’s original score is featured on the album. The score for the first part was released closer to the film’s home video release, which makes a separate score album to come out later seem possible. The soundtrack will be released on May 24, 2011 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all tracks on the album below.

Christophe Beck returning for ‘The Hangover Part II’

Christophe Beck is reteaming with director Todd Philips to score the comedy sequel The Hangover Part II. The first part released in 2009 still marks Beck’s highest grossing movie of his career. The project marks the fourth collaboration between Beck and Philips, who also worked together on School for Scoundrels and last year’s Due Date. In The Hangover sequel, the characters from the first part travel to Bangkok and find trouble when Stu (Ed Helms) gets married in the exotic location of Thailand. Apart from Helms, Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha all return for the sequel. Also returning are Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson. They are joined by new cast members Jamie Chung, Juliette Lewis and Liam Neeson, who will make an appearance in the film. Warner Bros will release the movie on May 26, 2011. Four new movies are opening in wide release today:

Just Go With It directed by Dennis Dugan and starring Adam Sandler, Jennifer Aniston and Nicole Kidman features a score by Rupert Gregson-Williams. No soundtrack album has been announced and judging from the release status of Gregson-Williams’ previous work for Adam Sandler/Happy Madison-produced films (with the exception of Bedtime Stories), the score will most likely remain unreleased.

Also opening wide is the animation musical Gnomeo & Juliet, which features songs by Elton John and a score by James Newton Howard and Chris Bacon. As reported last December, a soundtrack album including Elton John’s songs and four cues from the original score are has been released this Tuesday. Christophe Beck scoring ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love’

Christophe Beck has been hired to score the upcoming comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love. The film stars Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Marisa Tomei. In the movie, a father’s life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children. Crazy, Stupid, Love is directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, whose dark comedy I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor with music by Nick Urata opened earlier this month. Warner Bros recently pushed the movie from the original April release date to July 29, 2011, citing positive early test screening reactions for the move to the summer.

Dreamworks Animation’s latest movie features a score by Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe, as well as numerous popular songs. A soundtrack album featuring about 30 minutes of score, as well as most of the songs used in the movie has been released by Lakeshore Records. To listen to clips, check out Amazon or iTunes. The movie contains roughly 50 minutes of score including a very nice arrangement of the main themes during the end credits which has surprisingly been left off the soundtrack album.

Full slate of projects for Christophe Beck

Christophe Beck recently completed scoring the action comedy Red starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren. He replaced composer David Holmes, who was originally attached to the project as reported earlier this year. The movie comes out on October 15 from Summit Entertainment.

Beck also has a number of other projects coming out in the near future. Earlier this year, he completed the score for Todd Philipp’s road trip comedy Due Date starring Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. This marks his third collaboration with the director after scoring School for Scoundrels and last year’s comedy hit The Hangover.

Death at a Funeral score album coming
