Four new movies are opening wide this weekend:

Expecting to enjoy the biggest box office debut of the year so far is the action sequel Fast Five. The film’s music is composed by Brian Tyler. Check out our news entry from yesterday for a video interview with Tyler and recording sessions footage from the project. A score album will be released next Tuesday by Varese Sarabande and is already available on iTunes and a song album with three score cues is coming out on ABCKO Records.

Also opening wide is the teen comedy Prom directed by Joe Nussbaum. The film’s score is by Deborah Lurie. As reported earlier this month, a soundtrack with songs from the movie has been released by Hollywood Records, but none of Lurie’s original score is included. Read the rest of this entry »

Film Music Reporter has learned that Alexandre Desplat has signed on to score the drama The Ides of March. George Clooney directs and stars in the film about a young press spokesman, played by Ryan Gosling, who falls prey to backroom politics, the treacherous manipulations of veteran operatives and the seduction of a young intern. The movie is an adaptation of the Broadway play Farragut North and co-stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Evan Rachel Wood, Marisa Tomei, Max Minghella and Jeffrey Wright. Brian Tyler on ‘Fast Five’

Reelz Channel uploaded a new video feature today on Brian Tyler’s music for Fast Five. The composer is interviewed about his score on the action sequel and the video also offers footage from the recording sessions of the score. Tyler also recently uploaded a video from the orchestra and drumming recording of the track Fast Five from the score soundtrack album, which will be released by Varese Sarabande Records on May 3, 2011. William Ross recently recorded his score for the upcoming football drama Touchback. The film stars Kurt Russell, Brian Presley, Melanie Lynsky, Christine Lahti and Marc Blucas. According to Variety, the movie written and directed by Don Handfield centers on a man whose promising high school football career was cut short when he was critically injured during a playoff game. He gets the chance to decide if he wants the life he has, or the life that could have been, when he’s unexpectedly thrust back to that fateful instant that changed his life forever. Varese Sarabande Records has announced a soundtrack album for HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones. The album includes Ramin Djawadi’s original score from the show. The soundtrack will be released on June 14, 2011. More details on the album will be published next month. To pre-order the CD, visit Amazon. It is expected that Djawadi’s main theme will be included on the soundtrack (check out a video of the main titles sequence below). Game of Thrones premiered on April 17 and already got picked up for a second season. The show created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and starring Sean Bean, Peter Dinklage, Mark Addy, Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Michelle Fairley and Emilia Clarke is currently airing every Sunday night on HBO. Mark Isham has been hired to score the drama pilot Once Upon a Time. The project centers on a woman with a troubled past who is drawn into a small town in Maine where the magic and mystery of Fairy Tales just may be real. The pilot’s cast includes Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White, Robert Carlyle as Rumpelstiltskin, Lana Parrilla as the Evil Queen and Josh Dallas as Prince Charming. Jennifer Morrison, Jamie Dornan and Jared Gilmore are co-starring. Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis who are best known as writers on Lost and last year’s Tron: Legacy wrote the pilot and will be serving as executive producers on the project. Damon Lindelof (Lost) acts as a consulting producer and Mark Mylod (Ali G Indahouse, the upcoming comedy What’s Your Number?) is directing the pilot. Read the rest of this entry »

John Debney has taken over scoring duties on the upcoming comedy The Change-Up. Theodore Shapiro has originally been attached to write the music for the film as reported last month. The Change-Up is directed by David Dobkin (The Wedding Crashers) and stars Ryan Reynolds, Jason Bateman, Leslie Mann, Alan Arkin and Olivia Wilde. The movie tells the story of a married guy who accidentally changes bodies with his single best friend and ends up pursuing a female coworker. Walt Disney Records has announced a soundtrack album for the Pixar animation sequel Cars 2. The album includes Michael Giacchino’s original score from the film. According to the Pixar Blog, there will also be two original songs featured on the album, including a duet by two male artists. The soundtrack will be released on June 14, 2011 and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. A track list for the album will be posted when it gets published. Movieweb recently interviewed Giacchino about the project at a press event at Pixar’s Emeryville, California facility. The composer talked about working with Pixar, his thematic approach, as well as using the surf guitar for the “spy element” of the film. To check out the full interview, visit Movieweb. Brian Reitzell has signed on to score the TV drama pilot R.E.M. According to Deadline, the project is described as an Inception-style thriller and centers on a detective, who wakes up after an accident to find he is living in two different realities, one in which he has killed his son and one in which he has killed his wife. The NBC drama stars Jason Isaacs, Laura Allen, Cherry Jones, Dylan Minette, Wilmer Valderrama and Steve Harris.  The pilot of the show is directed by David Slade (Hard Candy, Eclipse) who previously collaborated with Reitzell on the 2007 vampire horror thriller 30 Days of Night. The R.E.M. pilot is written by Kyle Killen who wrote Jodie Foster’s feature film The Beaver, which is coming out next month and also created last year’s critically acclaimed TV drama Lone Star, which was canceled after a few episodes. The Newton Brothers have been hired to score the upcoming action thriller Setup. The film marks the theatrical feature directing debut of stunt coordinator Mike Gunther and stars Bruce Willis, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Ryan Phillippe, Jenna Dewan, James Remar and Randy Couture. The movie revolves around a group of friends who are catapulted into the middle of a diamond heist turned deadly. Curtis Jackson is also producing the film. A trailer for the film surfaced online last month, but has disappeared from most websites since. A release date has yet to be announced, but the movie’s domestic distributor Lionsgate is expected to make an announcement soon. Read the rest of this entry »
