John Frizzell has been hired to score the new teen drama The Secret Circle. The show based on a book by L.J. Smith centers on a young woman who moves to a new town and discovers that not only is she a witch and part of a secret coven, but she’s also the key that will unlock a centuries-old battle of good versus evil. The drama’s cast includes Brittany Robertson, Thomas Dekker, Shelley Hennig, Phoebe Tonkin, Jessica Parker Kennedy, Louis Hunter, Natasha Henstridge and Ashley Crow. Liz Friedlander (Take the Lead) directed the pilot and Kevin Williamson (Scream, The Vampire Diaries) is the showrunner of the series. Cutting Edge has announced a soundtrack album for the horror thriller Shark Night 3D. The album includes the original score from the movie by composer Graeme Revell. The soundtrack will be released digitally on August 30, 2011 and will be available to download on Amazon. Check out audio clips from all 19 tracks of the album after the jump. Jeff Russo has signed on to score the upcoming indie drama Cherry. The movie is directed by Stephen Elliot and stars James Franco, Heather Graham, Dev Patel, Ashley Hinshaw, Jonny Weston and Lili Taylor. The film centers on a troubled 18-year old girl who moves to San Francisco, where she gets involved in pornography and aligns herself with a cocaine-addicted lawyer. Elliot co-wrote the script with Lorelei Lee and Liz Destro (Explicit Ills) is producing the project. Cherry was shot this summer in San Francisco and has recently entered post-production. Three new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the horror thriller Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark directed by Troy Nixey, produced by Guillermo Del Toro and starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison. The film’s music is composed by Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders. A soundtrack album featuring the score has been released digitally earlier this week and will be coming out on CD on September 27 on Lakeshore Records. Also opening wide is the indie comedy Our Idiot Brother directed by Jesse Peretz and starring Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer, Steve Coogan, Hugh Dancy, Rashida Jones and Shirley Knight. Nathan Larson and Eric D. Johnson composed the movie’s score. Abkco Records has released a soundtrack album including selections of the score, as well as several songs from the movie. Silva Screen Records has announced the details of the soundtrack release for the thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The album includes the original score by Alberto Iglesias (The Kite Runner, The Constant Gardener). The soundtrack will be released digitally in the UK on August 29, 2011 and on CD on September 19. Sean Callery is set to score the upcoming FOX procedural The Finder. The show is a spin-off of the hit series Bones and is created by Hart Hanson (Bones). The show is set in Key West and centers on man who uses his unique gift to help others recover what they’ve lost. Geoff Stults (She’s Out of My League), Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile) who first appeared in the sixth season of Bones are playing the main characters on the drama. Hanson is executive producing with Dan Sackheim (Lie to Me) and Barry Josephson (Bones). Relativity Music Group has announced a score release for the thriller The Debt. The album includes almost 50 minutes of the original score from the film by Thomas Newman. Ilan Eshkeri is scoring the upcoming thriller Ashes. The movie stars Jim Sturgess, Ray Winstone, Lesley Manville (Another Year), Luke Evans (Robin Hood) and Jodie Whittaker (Attack the Block). The film is directed by Mat Whitecross (The Road to Guantanamo) who also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Viragh (Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll). Esther Douglas and Fiona Neilson are producing. Coldplay’s Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Chris Martin are executive producers on the project. Movie Score Media has announced a soundtrack release for the British dinosaur adventure series Primeval. The album features 75 minutes of the original score composed by Dominik Scherrer (Miss Marple, Scenes of a Sexual Nature) from the first three seasons of the show. The soundtrack is scheduled for a release on September 20, 2011 and will be available digitally and on CD. Primeval created by Adrian Hodges and Tim Haines tells the story about an evolutionary zoologist who discovers prehistoric creatures alive and well in the present day. Read the rest of this entry »

Theodore Shapiro has signed on to score next year’s drama Great Hope Springs. The movie starring Meryl Streep, Steve Carell, Tommy Lee Jones centers on a middle-aged couple who attend an intense counseling weekend to examine the intimacy issues threatening their marriage. The film is directed by David Frankel who has worked with Shapiro several times before. Their previous collaborations include The Devil Wears Prada, Marley & Me and the upcoming dramedy The Big Year.
