Alan Menken has announced on Twitter that he will composing music for the upcoming fantasy comedy Mirror, Mirror. The film is directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell) and stars Lily Collins as Snow White who enlists the help of seven resourceful rebels to win back her birthright and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen who steals control of a kingdom. Also starring are Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott, Sean Bean as the King and  Nathan Lane as the hapless servant to the queen. Melissa Wallack and Jason Keller (Machine Gun Preacher) have written the screenplay and Bernie Goldmann (300, Fool’s Gold), Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter, Zombieland) and Brett Ratner (Tower Heist, Rush Hour) are producing the project. Two new movies are opening in wide release this weekend:

Opening in most theaters is the fourth part of the Twilight series, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 directed by Bill Condon and starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner, Dakota Fanning, Michael Sheen, Anna Kendrick and Ashley Greene. The film’s score is composed by Carter Burwell who has scored his second movie for the franchise. A soundtrack album with the songs from the film, plus one track from Burwell’s score has already been released by Atlantic Records. Also opening wide is the animated film sequel Happy Feet Two directed by George Miller and featuring the voice talent of Elijah Wood, Pink, Robin Williams, Hank Azari, Benjamin Flores, Elizabeth Daily, Sofía Vergara, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Hugo Weaving and Anthony LaPaglia. John Powell has written the score and also produced the songs for the film. Some of the other composers well known in the film music community who are involved in the music for the project include T Bone Burnett and David Hirschfelder. David Buckley Scoring ‘Gone’

David Buckley is scoring the upcoming thriller Gone. The movie stars Amanda Seyfried as a young woman who returns home from her night shift to find her sister’s bed empty. She’s convinced the serial killer who kidnapped her two years before has come back to finish the job. Daniel Dunjata, Jennifer Carpenter, Sebastian Stan and Wes Bentley are co-starring. Heitor Dhalia is directing from a script by Allison Burnett (Untraceable, Autumn in New York). Tom Rosenberg & Gary Lucchesi (Million Dollar Baby, Underworld) and Sidney Kimmel (Adventureland, The Lincoln Lawyer) are producing the Lakeshore Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment production. ‘Sons of Anarchy’ Soundtrack Announced

Columbia Records has announced a soundtrack album for the FX hit series Sons of Anarchy. The album includes 15 songs from the show’s first four seasons, including the Emmy nominated theme song This Life written by singer-songwriter Curtis Stigers, Velvet Revolver guitarist Dave Kushner, producer Bob Thiele and show creator Kurt Sutter, performed by Curtis Stigers & The Forest Rangers. Also included on the soundtrack are four tracks performed by actress Katey Segal who won a Golden Globe for her performance on the show. Lyle Workman has signed on to score the upcoming comedy sequel American Reunion. The film reunites the stars of the original 1999 American Pie hit movie, Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Eugene Levy, Tara Reid, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge and Mena Suvari. They are joined by new cast members Katrina Bowden and Dania Ramirez. In the film, the characters of the original movie are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship. Jon Hurwitz  and Hayden Schlossberg who have written all three Harold & Kumar movies and directed the last two parts of the series, are writing and directing American Reunion. Craig Perry & Warren Zide (Final Destination) and Chris Moore (The Adjustment Bureau) are producing and original helmers Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz are executive producing the comedy. The project marks Workman’s first score for the franchise. Lakeshore Records has announced the details of the soundtrack release for the documentary Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop. The album includes the live performances from the movie by Conan O’Brien and the Legally Prohibited Band and Jack White from The White Stripes. Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop follows the comedian on his comedy tour, The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour, which took place in 2010 following his departure from The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien due to a scheduling dispute. According to a recent article in Variety, John Williams will start scoring Steven Spielberg’s upcoming biopic Lincoln late next spring. The project will mark the composer’s  and director’s 26th collaboration. The movie will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Abraham Lincoln and Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Hal Holbrook, James Spader, John Hawkes, David Strathairn, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill, Jeremy Strong and Joseph Cross are co-starring in the film. Following the news that James Newton Howard is scoring the upcoming thriller The Bourne Legacy from earlier this week, Universal Pictures has confirmed to Film Music Reporter that the composer has yet another high profile project coming up next summer. He will be scoring the epic fantasy adventure Snow White and the Huntsman. The film is directed by Rupert Sanders and stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Lily Cole, Sam Claflin and Sam Spruell. In this new version of Snow White, the huntsman sent to kill the girl becomes her mentor and protector instead. Ian McShane, Nick Frost, Bob Hoskins, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan are among the actors that will be portraying the dwarfs. Evan Daugherty and Hossein Amidi (Drive) have written the screenplay. Among the film’s producers are Joe Roth (Alice in Wonderland) and Sam Mercer (Signs) who both have collaborated with Newton Howard several times before. Read the rest of this entry »

Watertower Music will be releasing the official soundtrack album for Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The album includes the original score from the movie by Hans Zimmer. Lorne Balfe who was involved as a soundtrack producer on the first film in 2009 is again co-producing the music with Zimmer. Also included on the album are three tracks from recordings of Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Schubert’s Die Forelle and Ennio Morricone’s score for Two Mules for Sister Sara. The soundtrack will be released on December 13, 2011 and is available for pre-order on Amazon Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams,Stephen Fry, Jared Harris and Noomi Rapace. Harry Gregson-Williams has revealed in a recent interview with FSM Online that he will be scoring the upcoming remake of the sci-fi thriller Total Recall. The movie based on the Philip K. Dick short story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale is directed by Len Wiseman and stars Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Bryan Cranston, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy, John Cho and Ethan Hawke. Farrell plays factory worker Doug Quaid who is suffering from violent nightmares and begins to suspect that he’s a spy whose memory and personality were erased and replaced. Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium, Salt), Mark Bomback (Loive Free or Die Hard, Unstoppable) and James Vanderblit (Zodiac) have written the screenplay. Read the rest of this entry »
