Only one movie is opening in wide release this weekend:

Already breaking box office records is the film adaptation of the bestseller The Hunger Games directed by Gary Ross and starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson. James Newton Howard has written the film’s score and T Bone Burnett is the project’s executive music producer. A soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score will be released next week by Universal Republic. Check out the full album details here. A separate soundtrack including songs from and inspired by the movie by artists including Taylor Swift, Arcade Fire, Kid Cudi, Miranda Lambert, The Civil Wars, Glen Hasard, The Low Anthem, Punch Brothers and Birdy has been released by the label earlier this week. Opening in limited release is the martial arts action film The Raid: Redemption directed by Gareth Huw Evans about a SWAT team that infiltrates and attempts to take over an apartment complex acting as a safe house for a drug lord. Mike Shinoda and Joseph Trapanese have composed the score for the film. Madison Gate Records has released a soundtrack album featuring the score, as well as the song Razors.Out featuring vocals by Chino from Deftones. Mark Mothersbaugh is scoring the upcoming ensemble comedy What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The film is directed by Kirk Jones (Waking Ned Devine, Everybody’s Fine) and stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock and Rodrigo Santoro. The movie based on the New York Times bestseller by Heidi Murkoff follows five couples whose intertwined lives are turned upside down by the challenges of impending parenthood. Shauna Cross (Whip It) and Heather Hach (Freaky Friday) adapted the material for the screen. Mike Medavoy & Arnold Messner (Black Swan, Shutter Island), and David Thwaites (Miss Potter) are producing the Alcon Entertainment and Phoenix Pictures production. Epic Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the romantic comedy Think Like a Man. The album features the film’s title song performed by Jennifer Hudson & Ne-Yo feat. Rick Ross (already available to download here), as well as other songs from and inspired by the film by artists including John Legend feat. Ludacris (click here to download the original song), Kelly Rowland, Future, Bel Majeor, Marcus Canty, Quadran, Earth, Wind & Fore, Keri Hilson, Billy Wes, RaVaughn, Brandon Hines and Luther Vandross. The soundtrack will be released on April 10, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. None of the film’s original score by composer Christopher Lennertz is included on the album. Think Like a Man is directed by Tim Story and stars Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Taraji P. Henson, Meagan Good, Gabrielle Union, Jerry Ferrara, Regina Hall, Terrence J. and Romany Malco. Blake Neely has announced at the composer panel Behind the Music: Composing for WonderCon’s Favorite Projects at last week’s WonderCon 2012 at the Anaheim Convention Center that he is scoring the pilot of the new CW show Arrow. The modern retelling of the story of the DC Comics character Green Arrow stars Stephen Amell as the vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, martial arts and technology under his secret identity as Oliver Queen, a wealthy playboy and billionaire industrialist-turned-outspoken politician in Star City. Katie Cassidy, Susanna Thompson, Willa Holland and Colin Salmon are co-starring in the pilot. The project is written and executive produced by Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim (The Green Lantern) and Andrew Kreisberg (Fringe). Read the rest of this entry »

‘Treme’ Season 2 Soundtrack Announced

Rounder Records has announced a soundtrack release for the second season of the HBO drama Treme. The album includes the music from the show by a number of New Orleans musicians, including Henry Butler, Jon Cleary, Dr. John, Tom McDermott and David Torkanowsky. Also featured are tracks by artists including The Subdudes, Hot 8 Brass Band and a collaboration of Galactic, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and rapper Juvenile. The soundtrack will be released on April 17, 2012 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Treme created and executive produced by David Simon and Eric Overmyer (The Wire) interweaves stories of musicians and other residents who are trying to rebuild their lives while also preserving the city’s unique musical heritage and cultural traditions after Hurricane Katrina. Joseph Bishara has signed on to score the supernatural horror thriller The Warren Files. The film reunites the composer with director James Wan (Saw). They previously worked together on last year’s hit horror film Insidious. The Warren Files stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as a husband and wife team of demonologists and psychic investigators who enter the most horrifying case of their career, spirits in a Rhode Island farmhouse. Ron Livingston, Lily Taylor, Hayley McFarland, Shanley Canwell are co-starring in the thriller. Chad and Carey Hayes (House of Wax, The Reaping) have written the screenplay and Rob Cowan (The Crazies, The Shipping News), Tony DeRosa-Grund (Josie and the Pussycats) and Peter Safran (Buried) are producing the New Line Cinema film. Milan Records will be releasing a soundtrack album for the indie comedy Damsels in Distress. The album features the original score from the movie composed by Mark Suozzo (American Splendor, The Nanny Diaries) and Adam Schlesinger (Music & Lyrics), as well as a number of songs featured in the film. Damsels in Distress is written and directed by Whit Stillman and stars Greta Gerwig, Adam Brody, Analeigh Tipton, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Carrie MacLemore and Hugo Becker. Chris Bacon has been chosen by Smash executive producer and composer Marc Shaiman to write the underscore for this season’s remaining episodes of the musical show. Shaiman has written the series’ underscore himself for the first six episodes and Bacon has taken over scoring duties with episode 7 (The Workshop), which premiered last night. Shaiman and Scott Wittman continue to write the show’s original songs. Since our last update, several new songs have been released digitally, including the Shaiman- & Wittman-penned original songs The 20th Century Fox Mambo (performed by Katherine McPhee), I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn’t Love to Howl (performed by Megan Hilty), Mr. & Mrs. Smith (performed by Hilty and Will Chase), Let’s Be Bad (performed by Hilty) and History Is Made at Night (performed by Hilty and Chase), as well cover versions of It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World (performed by McPhee), A Song for You (performed by Chase), Crazy Dreams (performed by Hilty), Call Me (performed by McPhee), Grenade (performed by Chase) and I Haven’t Met You Yet (performed by Nick Jones). Relativity Music Group will be releasing the official soundtrack album for the upcoming comedy sequel American Reunion. The album features two tracks from the film’s original score composed by Lyle Workman (The 40-Year Old Virgin, Superbad), as well as the movie’s songs by artists including Good Charlotte, Cobra Starship, Stooshe, Pop Levi, The Blue Van, Kopek, Spice Girls, Boyz II Men and Montell Jordan. Intrada Records has announced the world premiere soundtrack release for Walt Disney Pictures’ 1991 drama White Fang based on the story by Jack London, directed by Randal Kleiser and starring Ethan Hawke, Klaus Maria Brandauer and James Remar. The album includes both scores written for the film. Disc 1 features the original music by Basil Poledouris who is given primary credit in the finished film.
