21st Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Nominations Announced

criticschoice The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) has announced the nominations for the 21st Critics’ Choice Movie Awards this morning. The film music-related categories are listed below. For a full list of nominations, click here. The awards will be given on Thursday, January 15, 2016 at the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony, which will broadcast in the US live on A&E, Lifetime & LMN.

The Best Score nominees are:

Tim Hecker Scoring Jason Lew’s ‘The Free World’

Tim Hecker is composing the music for the upcoming indie drama The Free World. The film is written and directed by Jason Lew (screenwriter of Gus Van Sant’s Restless) and stars Boyd Holbrook, Elisabeth Moss, Octavia Spencer, Sung Kang and Waleed Zuaiter. The movie follows a man truggling to adapt to life on the outside following his release from a brutal stretch in prison for crimes he didn’t commit and meets a mysterious woman with a violent past. Julian Wass to Score HBO’s ‘Animals’

Julian Wass has signed on to score the upcoming HBO original series Animals. The show is created by Phil Matarese and Mike Luciano and revolves around a group of downtrodden creatures – pigeons, rats, bedbugs, etc. – living in New York City. The animated comedy features the voices of Matarese and Luciano, as well as actors including Katie Aselton, Nick Kroll and Rob Corddry. The creators are also executive producing the project with Jay & Mark Duplass (Cyrus, Jeff, Who Lives at Home, Togetherness). Wass has previously scored the Duplass Brothers-directed feature The Do-Deca-Pentathlon and the comedy The Overnight, which they produced. Read the rest of this entry »

Premiering tomorrow, December 14, is the Syfy original mini-series Childhood’s End based on the sci-fi novel by Arthur C. Clarke of the same title and starring Charles Dance, Mike Vogel, Daisy Betts, Yael Stone, Julian McMahon, Osy Ikhile and Colm Meaney. The show’s original music is composed by Charlie Clouser (Saw, Wayward Pines, Numbers, Resident Evil: Extinction). ‘A Christmas Horror Story’ Soundtrack Released

Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album for the horror movie A Christmas Horror Story. The album features the film’s original music composed by Alex Khaskin (Replicant). The soundtrack is now available to download on iTunes, where you can also listen to audio samples. A Christmas Horror Story is directed by Grant Harvey, Steven Hoban & Brett Sullivan and stars William Shatner, George Buza, Ken Hall, Debra Lynne McCabe, Joe Silvaggio, Zoe de Grand’Maison, Shannon Kook, Alex Ozerov, Jeff Clarke and Amy Forsyth. Jerry Goldsmith’s Complete ‘Total Recall’ Score Released

Quartet Records has released a new soundtrack album for the 1990 sci-fi action thriller Total Recall directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. The album features the film’s original original score composed and conducted by Jerry Goldsmith (Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Alien, Planet of the Apes, The Omen) who later collaborated with the director two more times on Basic Instinct and Hollow Man. The 2-CD set release, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the movie, features the composer’s complete score on the first disc (including previously unreleased music), and the content of the 1990 soundtrack album, as well as alternates and source cues on the second disc. The only movie opening nationwide this weekend is the adventure drama In the Heart of the Sea directed by Ron Howard and starring Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Jordi Mollá, Ben Whishaw and Brendan Gleeson. The film’s original music is composed by Roque Banos (The Machinist, Evil Dead, Regression, Oldboy). WaterTower Music has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music last week. Opening in limited release this weekend is the comedy drama The Big Short directed by Adam McKay and starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt, Melissa Leo, Hamish Linklater, John Magaro, Rafe Spall, Jeremy Strong and Marisa Tomei. Nicholas Britell (Gimme the Loot, A Tale of Love and Darkness) has composed the film’s original music. Paramount Pictures has released a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s music. The film marks the feature directorial debut of actor Nate Parker and stars himself, alongside Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Gabrielle Union and Mark Boone Jr. The movie tells the true story of Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher whose financially strained owner accepts an offer to use his preaching to subdue unruly slaves and devises a plan to lead his people to freedom. ‘Don Verdean’ Soundtrack Released

Lakeshore Records has released a soundtrack album for Jared Hess’ comedy Don Verdean. The album the original songs from the film performed by the Heavy Young Heathens, as well as Leslie Bibb’s performance of Pillar of Salt. Also included are selections from the film’s original music composed by Ilan Eshkeri (Stardust, Still Alice, Layer Cake, Shaun the Sheep). Don Verdean is co-written and directed by Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) and stars Sam Rockwell, Amy Ryan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Bibb, with Will Forte and Danny McBride. Devendra Banhart to Score Jeff Baena’s ‘Joshy’

Singer/songwriter Devendra Banhart has been tapped to write the music for the upcoming indie comedy Joshy. The film is written and directed by Jeff Baena (Life After Beth, writer of I Heart Huckabees) and stars Thomas Middleditch, Adam Pally, Alex Ross Perry, Nick Kroll, Brett Gelman and Jenny Slate. The movie follows the title character who treats what would have been his bachelor party as an opportunity to reconnect with his friends. Liz Destro (Life of Crime, About Cherry) is producing the project for Destro Films, alongside Michael Zakin (Mozart in the Jungle, The Bling Ring) for American Zoetrope.
